Player availability: Internationals, domestic T20, injuries

2019/20 SuperCoach champion Thommo Aitken outlines the key dates that will impact player availability across BBL12.


To help navigate the ins and outs across the SuperCoach Big Bash season, 2019/20 champion Thommo Aitken has run his eye over player availability across the tournament.

From Test matches, to domestic T20 tournaments, key players will only be available at certain stages of the tournament, while a number of others are dealing with injury concerns that will also impact squads.

Leading into the tournament we’ll continually update this article as squads are announced and injury updates flow in.

Australia vs South Africa Series (December 17 till January 8)

If selected in the squad for the matches against South Africa, Australian players will return to BBL action after January 8.

Pakistan vs England Test Series (December 1 till December 21)

Pakistan Squad: TBA

Zac CrawleyHurricanesMisses the start of the BBL due to the Test series and at the moment is only a replacement player when Shadab Khan is playing for Pakistan during their home limited overs series. 
Faheem AshrafHurricanesIncluded in Pakistan squad for the series. Likely to become available from approx round 4-6.

Pakistan vs NZ

Test Series December 27 till Jan 8

ODI Series January 11-15

Squads:  TBA – Although as the Hurricanes have sourced a replacement for Shadab Khan during the tournament it should be safe to say he will be involved!

Will nothing is certain, it’s likely Shadab will leave around early January.

UAE International League T20 (January 6 till February 12)

Chris LynnStrikersAfter changing clubs ‘Lynnsanity’ is expected to be available for 11 out of a possible 14 matches in the regular season.
Chris JordanSixersReturning to the Sixers, Jordan should be available for Sixers Round 5 double, before leaving Round 8/9.
Mujeeb Ur RahmanRenegadesLikely unavailable from Round 8/9 onwards.
Alex HalesThunderLikely unavailable from Round 8/9 onwards.
Colin MunroHeatLikely unavailable from Round 8/9 onwards.
Andre RussellRenegadesThe all-rounder from the West Indies is available for the first four matches of the BBL season. His last match is expected to be Christmas Eve against the Hurricanes. Martin Guptill will replace him for the remainder of BBL12.
James VinceSixersSimilarly to Jordan, Vince is expected to be available for ten matches this season.
Sam BillingsHeatLikely unavailable from Round 8/9 onwards.
Akeal HoseinRenegadesLikely unavailable from Round 8/9 onwards.
Trent BoultStarsNot selected for NZ’s ODI squad to face India, will depart for ILT20 from Round 8/9.
Fazalhaq FarooqiThunderAvailable for the Thunder’s first nine games after being signed by the Thunder as an international replacement for David Willey.

SA20 2023 (10 January till 11 February)

Faf du PlessisScorchersIn massive BBL news, the Scorchers have signed du Plessis. He will play in their first seven games in his stint.
Rashid KhanStrikersFans of the BBL will be disappointed to know that Rashid is expected to play 6 or 7 matches for the Strikers before leaving to play in another T20 tournament.
Rilee RossouwThunderExpected to be unavailable from approximately Round 7/8.

South Africa vs England (January 27 till Feb 1)

Squads: TBA, shouldn’t impact Supercoach significantly if at all.

International Player Replacements

Sam HainHeatHe will replace Billings and Munro once they depart in the new year.
Martin GuptilRenegadesA fairly recent acquisition for the Renegades, Guptil will replace Andre Russell after his cameo stint. He will be available from December 28 until the finals, if the Renegades can turn around their form this year.
Fazalhaq FarooqiThunderPicked up by the Thunder as a replacement for David Willey.  The 22 year old death bowler from Afghanistan will be available for the Thunder’s first 9 matches.
