Thommo's Takes: Round 7 SuperCoach BBL recap


<p>Welcome to our review article at SC Playbook where we review the action from the previous round and see what impact it had on our side and what we can learn from it.</p>



<p>Three teams on the double meant that some big scores could be earnt if you went with the right players!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Stars vs Sixers</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Sixers won by 7 wickets</em></strong></p>



<p><strong>Takes:</strong></p>



<ul>
<li>One change for the Sixers. Hughes was in for Patterson. Two changes for the Stars. Scott Boland finally got some cricket action replacing Steketee. Handscomb was a late call up to replace the injured Sam Harper who unfortunately took a nasty blow in the nets during the week. Best wishes to him!</li>



<li>Maxy again looked good with the bat. Walking casually down the wicket to deposit O’Keefe into the stands with ease. 31 off just 14 balls before getting caught out on the cover boundary. Not great for my SC team, but very good as a Sixers fan!</li>



<li>No one else really got going for the Stars with the bat. Starts for Rogers, Lawrence, Stoinis and Cartwright but none of them could up the SR once they got their eye in.</li>

<ul>
<li>Todd Murphy who has struggled at times during this campaign (even bowling 1 over in an innings) was the pick of the Sixers bowlers. 2/15 off his 4 overs, including the big scalps of Maxwell and Webster.</li>



<li>1 over and not batting for Edwards. Hopefully people were looping him!</li>



<li>Sixers cruised with the bat and a dominant power surge lead them to a comfortable victory.</li>



<li>Main man with the bat was Vince. 79 off 57 in a fine performance. Not the first time he has done that at the MCG against the Stars!</li>



<li>Hughes with a solid 41 off 32. Even seems a bit harsh we will make way for Steve Smith next round with play like that!</li>



<li>Boland the only multiple wicket taker for the Stars. 4 overs and 2/38.</li>



<li>3 overs for Maxy and Webster. Maxy even bowled a power surge over for good measure. 3 overs for 0/23 for Maxy and 3 overs for 1/22 for Beau.</li>



<li>1 over for Merlo and Lawrence. No overs for Stoinis. Interesting.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Heat vs Hurricanes</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Heat won by 1 run (DLS)</em></strong></p>

<li>Both teams unchanged for this fixture. One of the rare times that has happened this season.</li>



<li>Game of the tournament so far?</li>



<li>Munro again on fire in a round where the Heat have more than one game. A very steady start, but he got going and took a liking to Chaudhary, depositing him over the fence a couple of times in one over. 56 off 47 balls and a cheeky run out to finish off the thrilling match.</li>



<li>Tall Paul Walter had opportunity to go big, facing 21 deliveries including power surge overs, but he couldn’t find his timing on a Gabba wicket that suited the bowlers. The value of a true all-rounder was on display though as he racked up 77 SC points through 22 runs, 2/28 off 3 overs and a catch.</li>

<ul>
<li>Hobart have struggled to take wickets consistently this BBL, but those who trusted the roles of Ellis and Jordan were rewarded in this match. 102 SC points for Jordan taking 3/19 and 66 SC points for Ellis as he took 2/23. He should have had 3 but Jewell dropped an easy catch in the 2<sup>nd</sup> last over. In fact the Hurricanes dropped many easy catches and this probably proved the difference in the end.</li>



<li>5<sup>th</sup> bowler duties again shared around for the Canes. 1 over for Andersen, 2 overs for Chaudhary and 1 over for David.</li>



<li>Chaudhary was expensive in his 2 overs, but he did pick up a wicket. He did most damage with the bat for the Hurricanes and almost dragged them over the line with a counter attacking 55 off 38 deliveries. He has been a sensational find for them this BBL. More than just a loop!</li>



<li>Those that traded in Canes batters were not rewarded this game. Jewell, McDermott, Wright and even cheapie Hain all dismissed cheaply as the Heat bowlers got off to a cracking start defending an under par total. Game 2 at the Adelaide Oval should be more friendly for them.</li>

<li>There were many Heat bowling options to consider this week. Many people will be fairly happy after their first game. Bartlett proved his price tag was worth it taking 3/30 off his 4 overs (and being on a hat trick in his first over). 85 SC points. At almost half his price Spencer Johnson delivered for people who traded him in taking 2/21 off his 3 overs. A cracking 19<sup>th</sup> over which delivered 2 wickets including a caught and bowled. Neser (actually batted at 7, that hasn’t always happened so far) and bowled 3 overs in this game. Granted it was 3 overs straight up but he looked promising in the home conditions with 1/18 off his 3 overs. Kuhnemann was tidy and wiped his hand on the pitch 1000 times (I stopped counting after reaching four figures) but was unable to capture a wicket. The only disappointment for owners was Swepson, who presumably didn’t bowl due to the greasy conditions.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Thunder vs Scorchers</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Scorchers won by 7 wickets</em></strong></p>

<ul>
<li>One change for the Scorchers. Behrendorff out for McKenzie. One change for the Thunder. Gilkes in (and taking the gloves) for Hatcher. Sams moved down to number 7 in the batting order.</li>



<li>The pitch. Hard for the batters. Ball did a heap off the deck. Some deliveries were unplayable and spinners had a field day. Something to remember when the Thunder return in round 9.</li>



<li>Hales clearly top scoring for the Thunder in a rollercoaster innings. Crunching a few into the stands, but also getting bogged down for extended periods. 72 off 55 deliveries. He didn’t field in the second innings due to some sort of calf niggle. This is noteworthy before the Thunder double in round 9. He also was involved in many unfortunate run outs for the Thunder.</li>



<li>Agar and Cooper Connolly the stars of the show for the Scorchers. Agar, 4 overs (including a maiden) 2/6. Cooper (bowling the last over of the match too!) took 3/25. Both players had a run out for good measure. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who left Cooper on the bench with no emergency on him.</li>

<li>Only 1 over for Morris. This was just because of the state of the pitch. Nothing else.</li>



<li>Underwhelming returns for popular Perth pace people (try to say that five times quickly!). 4 overs 0/36 for Tye and 3 overs 0/30 for Richo.</li>



<li>Hardie rolled the arm over for two overs. He also made 22 with the bat.</li>



<li>Crawley the clear best batter for Perth. 58 off 56 with a steady knock on the tough Showgrounds wicket.</li>



<li>Inglis looked to have no troubles on said wicket. 26 off 19 including two massive sixes.</li>



<li>Sams with a dirty SC night. Only 3 SC points!</li>



<li>Tanveer economical and I can’t believe he didn’t pick up a wicket during his 4 overs. 0/14 for him.</li>



<li>McAndrew the only multiple wicket taker for the Thunder. 2/27 off his 4 overs.</li>

<li>Carey in for Nielsen for a cameo game. No changes for the Hurricanes. Still no Matthew Wade.</li>



<li>Ben McDermott carried the Hurricanes innings on his back. 95 not out from the 165 run total. One would assume he would stay opening the innings after a performance like that.</li>



<li>CJ with a second cameo batting performance of the BBL. 30 off 15. He captured a sneaky wicket at the end of his bowling spell too that would have pleased owners.</li>



<li>Jamie Overton back in form. A tad late for people like me who captained him last round! 3/23 off his 4 overs. 2 catches as well to build a handy SC score of 123.</li>



<li>Boyce again highly economical as he has been for most of the tournament. 2/13 off his 4 overs.</li>



<li>2 overs for Matt Short. He did it again with the bat, top scoring for the Strikers with 45 off 32 balls.</li>



<li>Lynn and Carey both scoring in the thirties to help guide the Strikers home.</li>



<li>Meredith couldn’t complete his 3<sup>rd</sup> over as he looked to pick up another side strain injury.</li>



<li>Ellis the only multiple wicket taker for the Canes. 2/44 off his 4 overs.</li>



<li>Chaudhary bowled 4 overs and was economical. 0/22 for him.</li>

<p><strong><em>Result: Heat won by 23 runs</em></strong></p>

<li>Two changes for the Heat. Marnus and Usman in for McSweeney and Brown. One change for Perth. In a blow for some Supercoachers (myself included!) Tye was rested for the returning Behrendorff.</li>



<li>Neser was back with a bang! The return of Neser from last year. He bowled all 4 overs for the first time this tournament. 2/31 were his final figures. With the bat he accelerated the Heat’s innings late with 64 off 30. He also took an incredible catch in the outfield to dismiss the dangerous Josh Inglis too!</li>



<li>Marnus and Billings solid with the bat too, scoring 45 and 37 respectively.</li>



<li>Agar probably the pick of the Perth bowlers with 2/29 off his 4 overs.</li>
</ul>

<li>1 over for Hardie. 14 off 16 with the bat.</li>



<li>Inglis passed 20 again. 28 off 20 deliveries.</li>



<li>Laurie Evans the star with the bat again for Perth. 51 off 29 balls as he gave Perth a small chance to chase down the Heat’s total.</li>



<li>Spencer Johnson the best Heat bowler. 2/23 off his 4 overs.</li>



<li>Bartlett with some nice late wickets for owners. 2/29 off his 4 overs.</li>



<li>Tall Paul didn’t fire with the bat but picked up points with the ball. 2/30 off his 3 overs.</li>
