BBL Supercoach | Seeing double round 4


<p>Round three was the one we’ve been waiting for, where our double players finally paid dividends for the investment.</p>



<p>We saw some monster scores from popular trade-ins like Tom Curran, great skipper scores from the most popular option in Stoinis, and even some ‘Canes repaying the faith for holding them.</p>



<p>We’re almost at the halfway point of the tournament and have learnt a lot more about which teams are good, which venues are high scoring, and who we should be targeting.</p>

<p>Before we dive into the Double Game Week analysis, here are my observations from the round:</p>



<p>*Cooper Connolly is a superstar. We’ve waxed lyrical about his batting, but it’s his bowling in the last two rounds that has turned heads. What a player.</p>



<p>*The SCG is absolutely diabolical and is killing the Sixers&#8217; prospects. Ideally, we’re holding a couple of Sixers with their favourable draw, but until the SCG gets better, it’ll remain a lottery.</p>



<p>*The Stars are the real deal. Undefeated and doing it with ease so far this tournament.</p>



<p>*There are a lot more poor teams than good this year. There’s still time to turn it around, but we’ve already seen worrying signs from the Heat, Sixers, Scorchers, Strikers, Renegades, and Thunder. Poor bowling units are letting the batsmen really get away with some big scores at the moment.</p>



<p>*Joel Davies is quickly turning into the cheapie who got away. We flagged him last week as a buy, so well done to those who jumped on. The most consistent Sixers bowler in the last two rounds.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Double game week strategy</strong></h3>



<p>The Perth Scorchers are on the double this week and for the first time this season, are the only side on it. </p>



<p>They take on the Thunder at Showgrounds before a trip down to Hobart to take on the ‘Canes.</p>



<p>While this simplifies the trading strategy somewhat around the best targets, it makes your skipper strategy more important &#8211; if your VC fails, you’ll need someone reliable to put the C on.</p>



<p>That’s why a lot of coaches will be looking long and hard at Matt Short this week, who&#8217;s looking imperious and has a good run of fixtures in the next three weeks.</p>



<p>When it comes to the Scorchers, they’re bat-heavy. </p>



<p>The gaps identified in their bowling unit in preseason have been obvious to all.</p>

<p>The presence of two great all-rounders in Cooper Connolly &#8211; batting three and bowling bulk overs &#8211; and Aaron Hardie &#8211; batting four and bowling death overs &#8211; really does weaken the interest in the other prospects.</p>



<p>Aside from those two, there are a couple of ‘bat only’ options and some bowlers who are a little unreliable.</p>



<p>The inclusion of Josh Inglis for the first game of the double only is a potential banana peel to avoid.</p>



<p>How you afford Connolly is the big question of the week. </p>



<p>If you sell your Stars, you’re lessening your double game week options for the next round when they’ve got another two games.</p>

<p>Sell Wildermuth; you’re missing out on more cash growth, as he will still have a small or even negative breakeven.</p>



<p>Most people will want to sell Hurricanes, but with another double to come, holding could be astute.</p>



<p>So the people in the crosshairs are likely to be Shadab Khan or Jack Edwards. </p>



<p>With Shadab set to depart the tournament after this round, I think the choice is pretty clear.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Buy</strong></h3>



<p><strong>Cooper Connolly &#8211; BAT/BWL &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>Simply put, the best young cricketer in the country. </p>



<p>He will be the most popular VC option and will cost an arm and a leg to get in.</p>



<p>Worth it? Probably.</p>

<p><strong>Joel Paris &#8211; BWL &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>The leader of this young bowling attack. </p>



<p>Paris will take the big overs and has proven himself a consistent performer over the last two years. </p>



<p>If you want a bowler, he’s the one to chase.</p>



<p><strong>Mitch Marsh &#8211; BAT/BWL &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>He’s simply too cheap for what he can do. </p>



<p>He will come off eventually, and at a discounted price, he could help you bridge the gap to Connolly.</p>



<p><strong>Finn Allen &#8211; WKT/BAT &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>High risk, high reward. </p>



<p>He’s the perfect player to go against, but he is also the type of player who could score two centuries.</p>

<p><strong>Matt Short &#8211; BAT/BWL &#8211; Adelaide Strikers</strong></p>



<p>If you can afford it, the time to buy is now. </p>



<p>He comes up against a weak Brisbane side at his home ground, who will likely be without Shaheen Afridi (injured). </p>



<p>If your VC fails, you need a solid skipper, he’s the best available.</p>



<p><strong>Jamie Overton &#8211; BAT/BWL &#8211; Adelaide Strikers</strong></p>



<p>For the reasons mentioned above, a premium all-rounder with a double in Round 7 could be the man if you cannot afford Short.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Consider</strong></h3>



<p><strong>Aaron Hardie &#8211; BAT/BWL &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>He could get dropped for Inglis and is in poor form. </p>



<p>Something has been off with Hardie for the last two seasons, so definitely don’t consider skippering him. </p>



<p>But he’s cheap for what we know he could produce.</p>



<p><strong>Brody Couch &#8211; BWL &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>A sneaky, cheap option whose job security looks solid, albeit his skills aren’t quite top-tier. </p>



<p>You could get lucky with him.</p>



<p><strong>Ashton Agar &#8211; BWL &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>His career sample size will tell you he’s not Supercoach relevant, but he has a good record at Showgrounds, which will aid his orthodox spin, and should match up well against the right-handers in the Hobart top order.</p>

<p>A rare bright spark for the Sixers so far this year. </p>



<p>His spin bowling has been awesome, and a matchup at Marvel and a double in Round 6 make him an astute purchase who will make money.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Avoid</strong></h3>



<p><strong>Josh Inglis &#8211; WKT/BAT &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>Has been released for the first game of the double, but won’t play both.</p>



<p><strong>Ashton Turner &#8211; BAT &#8211; Perth Scorchers</strong></p>



<p>Good player, poor role. </p>



<p>Don’t get sucked in by the price.</p>

<p>Still a raw talent whose returns have been poor so far this year. </p>



<p>You risk getting stuck with him.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>My trades</strong></h3>



<p>I am lucky to already own Connolly, having invested in Round 2, so the headache of his price tag is one I don’t have to deal with.</p>



<p>I am keen to use this opportunity to target Matt Short to bulk out my skipper options and get another match winner. </p>



<p>It’ll just come down to who I need to sell to fund it &#8211; anyone from the Stars I have to flip out, I’ll try to get back in.</p>
