NRL Supercoach Final Word | Round 10 trades and skippers


<p>The last few weeks of SuperCoach NRL have been absolute chaos, and the swings have been violent in points, rankings, and team value.</p>



<p><strong>Latrell </strong>has hit the million-dollar mark, but don’t forget the man who almost got their first in <strong>Milky Jenkins</strong> &#8211; two weeks with no tries has seen him at his lowest price since Round 4 and starring at a break-even of 160, which could see him under $700k next round.</p>



<p>What does it all mean? It means don’t panic, as the roller coaster is going to stop at some point for most players. Unless, of course, you’re talking about <strong>Jackson Ford, Simi Sasagi,</strong> or &#8216;Trell. And I don’t own any!</p>



<p>It’s about trying to get the guy before he gets on the roller coaster and then knowing when to hit eject. So study the matchups and form lines &#8211; and keep reading, as there are a few great draws emerging for some clubs!</p>

<p>This week, we’re talking a bit about Bye Planning and replacement players. If you’re trading, you’ve probably got bye coverage on the mind. And with injuries to <strong>Adam Doueihi </strong>and <strong>Mark Nawaqanitawase</strong>, plus the benching of <strong>Arama Hau</strong>, there are plenty of trades that need to be made.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Replacements</strong></h3>



<p>Firstly, let’s look at Hau.</p>



<p>At $570k with a dual position, there are a ton of ways you can move him up or down. But if you’re looking at bye coverage specifically, the guy who jumps off the table for me is <strong>Toby Couchman</strong>.</p>



<p>I’ll assume most have Hau at FRF, and if you do, getting Toby Couchman for $640k with a BE of 36 is good business. He’s a little minutes dependent, but even in spite of the Dragons being trash, he’s good enough to average 70 and offers a little attacking upside with his offloading through the middle.</p>

<p>For his career, when he plays over 55 minutes, he averages 75. So I think there’s a little value there.</p>



<p>The Dragons play both Rounds 12 and 13, which is convenient too, and he’s very close to being a season keeper.</p>



<p>Just behind him, I’ve got <strong>Joseph Tapine</strong> at $593k. He’s a super boring player to own, but for under $600k, a guy who should be able to score you a consistent 65 is serviceable during the byes. And the Raiders coverage is top-tier.</p>



<p>There are some cheaper speculative picks &#8211; <strong>Tom Mikaele, Sione Finau,</strong> with the injury to his brother, or even Jackson Ford. But the question marks on them all make me hesitant.</p>



<p>Next, let’s talk about Mark.</p>



<p>Now, assuming you’ve got him in CTW, the best options to replace him aren’t as straightforward when you’re looking at the byes. </p>

<p><strong>Kayal Iro</strong> is the most logical option based on talent, but he doesn’t play 12. I think at $727k with a BE of -18, if you want him, you just buy him anyway and settle for the poorer Round 12 score.</p>



<p>If you’re dead keen on a bye number, the best is <strong>Tolu Koula</strong>, who is scoring well without setting the world alight since his shift to fullback. Manly have a depleted Broncos side into the Tigers and Titans in Round 12. Plus, they play Round 13 too against the Sharks. He’s under $600k and will be well bought as a downgrade in Round 12 for ‘Trell owners.</p>



<p>There’s a lot of chat about <strong>Greg Marzhew</strong> this week after his 130 against Souths. I don’t mind it at all, but you’ve got to know what you’re buying, which is a lesser version of the man than in previous years.</p>



<p>Both Greg and Bradman Best’s base and power stats are way down this year, and the offload has also been paused. Greg’s actually the 50th best CTW for B+P this year, which is a far cry from his typically Top 10 spot.</p>



<p>The Knights run is elite, though, so if you think he will keep scoring tries, he’s a good price.</p>

<p>If you can wait a week, <strong>AKP</strong> at the Wahs has struck up a lovely relationship with RTS inside him and is scoring tries for fun. With the Dragons in R12, he’s a great target!</p>



<p>And finally, to Adam Doueihi. My sweet prince. I already miss him.</p>



<p>If you need a halfback, pick up <strong>Sam Walker</strong>, who is in form and has a good run.</p>



<p>If he’s in your flex, then I really like <strong>Kalyn Ponga</strong>, who has got the Dragons and Titans in back-to-back weeks and then the Eels in Round 13 after Origin.</p>



<p>Ponga’s played 3 games and is averaging 87. This includes a 28-minute game against Manly where he scored 54. He’s looking every part the Top 3 option at fullback, so if you can overlook the Round 12 absence, you’re buying a Captain option. At the price, you simply cannot go wrong.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bye Planning</strong></h3>



<p>In all, the first major bye is a bit of a banana peel. We still don’t know who&#8217;s going to be unavailable.</p>



<p>And two of the best overall teams to target from a coverage standpoint also don’t play both 12 and 13 in the Dolphins and Tigers.</p>



<p>The underrated teams to look at are Manly, Canberra, and the Dogs. A tier below them are the Cows and Dragons, who play both 12 and 13, but long-term don’t have as good coverage.</p>



<p>Here’s a bunch of dudes to think about targeting who are worth knowing about during the period.</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Simi Sasagi</strong>; must-have in Round 12 if you don’t already own.</li>



<li><strong>Jack Bostock</strong>; monitor this week, but if 50 in B+P is the norm, plus being a reliable kick target on last tackle, then for his price, he’s a steal and could be a priority next week from a topped out cheapie like Faemani.</li>



<li><strong>Connelly Lemuele</strong>; last week was an absolute adonis in attack but limited by a 60-minute role. Somehow, in 80 minutes this year, he’s gone backwards. Keep your eyes on him and his partnership with Brad Schneider.</li>



<li><strong>Haumole Olukau’atu</strong>; if not picked for Origin, he’s a must.</li>



<li><strong>Jackson Ford</strong>: see above.</li>



<li><strong>Alofi Khan-Perreira</strong>; he’s got three doubles in a row. The partnership with RTS looks great. Sneaky sneaky option.</li>



<li><strong>Scott Drinkwater;</strong> a traditional bye round bully. Even without the kicking and the injury-impacted start to the year, he’s nearly averaging 80. A gun buy this week.</li>



<li><strong>Jamayne Isaako</strong>; great bye round option. Let&#8217;s monitor how the partnership with Bostock goes.</li>



<li><strong>Jake Clifford</strong>; people aren’t treating him seriously, and he looks like the best option at five-eighth for the year.</li>



<li><strong>Jaydn Su’A</strong>; nearly under $600k for a guy who could average 70 with ease.</li>



<li><strong>Braidon Burns</strong>; just about my favourite player in Supercoach, who I’ve never owned in Classic.</li>



<li><strong>RTS</strong>; 71, 82, 58, 80 since moving to left centre and getting AKP outside him. Handy scores!</li>
</ul>



<p>There are a lot of names there because I don’t think this season is as cookie-cutter as previous years. I guess the lesson is have fun and back your gut!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>My trades and skippers</strong></h3>



<p>It’s been a rough fortnight for the Jaromen Empire, slipping from 4k overall to 20k. I sold Iro on his bye and bought Mark, which just about sums it up.</p>



<p>Needless to say, I’ve got some work to do over the byes to climb the ladder.</p>



<p>As an owner of Adam Doueihi, Mark Nawaqanitawase, and Arama Hau, I’m going to use my final boost. I’ve got three halfbacks, so effectively Doueihi is in flex too, which is nice.</p>



<p>Firstly, Mark is going to become Latrell. There’s literally a million reasons why I should buy someone else, but the fact that I can afford to means I’m going to do it.</p>



<p>He’s running at Sifa Talakai and will be my skipper this week.</p>



<p>Next, it’s Arama Hau up to Toby Couchman. This trade only costs $70k to make and is a significant upgrade. I wish the Dragons were going better, but he still put up a 70 when they conceded 60 to the Roosters. The bye coverage is helpful, too.</p>

<p>Finally, Adam Doueihi is becoming Kalyn Ponga. I’ve got the cash to make him into anyone, but I think KP is about to score back-to-back tons against the Dragons and Titans, and for under $700k, I think he’s a steal.</p>



<p>So after all that, I’m buying two guys who don’t play in Round 12 and one who I’ve got to sell in two weeks. But there’s genuinely no one in the game who I think scores more points in the two weeks than Latrell, so the price is irrelevant.</p>



<p>I said this year that I needed to prioritise trades towards skipper options, and ‘Trell and Ponga provide that in spades, which offsets the bye coverage.</p>
