Team reveal: The SC Spy drops his Supercoach BBL14 squad

G&#8217;day legends!



Good to be back. I&#8217;ve spent plenty of time over the last month trying to formulate a base squad and until last night I simply couldn&#8217;t get it and it was very frustrating. Injuries, national call-ups and the like are making things very difficult especially trying to determine how many players from the Melbourne Stars and Renegades I would go with for their round 1 doubles. I have followed the Andrew Langley Centre of Excellence criteria of maximising doubles as much as possible, while mainly making sure that I can afford quality players when their teams are on the double. To make it easy to track, I&#8217;ll list my current squad by teams and assign their position next to their name.

Melbourne Stars The Stars have been the main source of trouble given the injury and subsequent uncertainty around Glenn Maxwell and the possibility Beau Webster stays with the national squad. As such I&#8217;ve decided to lock in four as it stands. 1. Beau Webster (Batsmen) &#8211; Pending availability he is an absolute certainty. In form and now one of the real main men for the Stars. Batting, bowling, a few catches and 5 games in the opening 3 rounds. Lock him in! 2. Tom Curran (Batsmen) &#8211; I can basically copy and paste the above. Locked and loaded. Possible VC / straight skipper 3. Marcus Stoinis (Batsmen) &#8211; We are here again on Big Stoin. The difference this year is that he seems to be in some actual form. At the price and upside he is hard to ignore. 4. Mark Steketee (Bowler) &#8211; The slot will depend on the opening game team list but I&#8217;ve always liked the Stek. I could drop him to a Hamish McKenzie if needed or Joel Paris.

Melbourne Renegades I actually like their side and draw a lot more and could go up to five players for their early double, albeit conscious of a round 3 bye.



Two doubles in the first four rounds is huge, so if you can cover that round 3 bye you could benefit.



Be aware or injuries and non-players though if you are a trying for too many Renegades come round 3. I&#8217;ll likely drop three out after round 1 and put 3 back for their second double round. 1. Josh Brown (Batsmen) &#8211; I want one of him or Fraser-McGurk. The cheaper price and performance in the big finals games last year has Brown currently ahead. I&#8217;m tempted by both but it&#8217;s risky! 2. Tom Rogers (Bowler) &#8211; A genuine wicket taker and can wield the willow when opportunity allows. I thought he was unlucky a lot last season. Hopefully we see a bounce back to his form of the previous two seasons where he snared 43 wickets. 3. Adam Zampa (Bowler) &#8211; A class act who can hopefully bring his international form to the Big Bash! Yep, it&#8217;s the wrong way around but he struggled last season and thus the cheap price. Hopefully just an outlier and he is back to regular programming. 4. Fergus O&#8217;Neill (Bowler) &#8211; The in-form man. Two matches last year for three wickets and he’s been flying at first-class level this summer. I&#8217;m backing the youngster in and hopefully less of a chance at a rest then the older quicks like Kane Richardson. Other options include the newly added all rounder Hassan Khan. There is limited data on him, but he looks like he can take the odd wicket and send a few into the stands with the bat when given the chance. Whilst the all rounder role is temping I&#8217;m not sure I can trust him off minimal looks. Fraser-McGurk could go mad at any moment. Can I have two straight Batsmen? Will Sutherland I&#8217;m putting a line through due to injury concerns.

Adelaide Strikers With the round 2 and 4 doubles and with the quality they possess I&#8217;m jumping on early here with a view to playing the two guns on field as single game week guys given the lack of elites in the Melbourne teams. 1. Matt Short (Bowler) &#8211; It could be nice to double check his role this season and wait a round, but I feel better knowing I have him and don’t have to shuffle any decks heading into rounds 2 and 4. If Maxwell if back this would change, but that appears to be no chance at this stage. 2. Jamie Overton (Batsmen) &#8211; Absolutely killed it last season and basically a must for me on the doubles, unless we were to hear his recent injury had flared up and couldn’t bowl. Maybe I could wait one round to be sure? I&#8217;ll check my final side and make that call. 3. Henry Thornton (Bowler) &#8211; Oh you had better believe it. He can cop a bit on the Adelaide Oval road but he’s such a wicket-taker. Leading into last season he has 29 wickets in 16 games at a strike rate of 11.5. Insane! Two of his four double games are at Adelaide but he gets one at Marvel which could suit. 5/3 again please Sir&#8230; 4. Brendan Doggett (Bowler) &#8211; I haven&#8217;t locked down this spot yet, but he can bowl the man and is he is priced well. He had two top shelf BBL seasons three and five years ago respectively. Ultimate value if he can find that form.

Perth Scorchers A round 2 double and then we can essentially do away with them except for Jhye Richardson if he proves to be healthy because I surely can&#8217;t drop him. Unless I must! 1. Josh Inglis (Wicket-keeper) &#8211; I think it will either be him or Josh Philippe because there is dead set no one. I&#8217;ll decide closer to the first ball. Inglis being with the Aussie camp may sway things, but I love how many catches he takes behind his gun quicks and I like his consistency. I don&#8217;t think I can do the double keeper cheapie approach. 2. Matthew Spoors (Batsmen) – All-rounder status and my main man Maxy Bryden believes he will be playing at this stage given Agar’s absence. A cheapie selection who can bat and bowl. No Jhye Richardson just yet. It pains me to say that maybe waiting to see if he gets through game one could be the move!

Sydney Sixers 1. Jack Edwards (Bowler) – I’m a big fan of him and his recent form is good. I could swap him for Jhye Richo though I daresay! Sydney Thunder 1. Sam Konstas (Batsmen) &#8211; The young stud. It seems he may get the number three or opener spot and is dirt cheap. I&#8217;ll have him ready for the round 6 double at hopefully $130k by then! Hobart Hurricanes 1. Jake Doran &#8211; Non playing wicket keeper loop option. Just the one non player for me this season. Looking at depth to maximise money growth, coverage and max double round players. That&#8217;s where the ‘PuntersBlades’ stand heading into round 1. There’s a bit to play out still but I do feel pretty settled. Finally! Bring on more of the summer of cricket.
