G’day Troops,



The trials are over and we are just days out from the Vegas season openers, so it&#8217;s time to reveal my final squad.



Well, at least until next week&#8217;s team lists drop before the remaining six games of round 1&#8230;



The injury to Jayden Campbell has forced a reshuffle in my squad make-up, but I’m extremely happy with how it’s looking at this stage.



Of course things can change, but I’m fairly set on the majority of the squad.



There are a few cheapie bench spots that remain unknown which will be filled in once trials have finished, and of course once the all-important round 1 teams are named.



Here’s what &#8216;Blacklock n Load&#8217; have settled on.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hooker</h2>

The guy can seriously play footy.



Provided he’s locked in for 80 minutes which is likely and healthy after a few issues last year, then there is no reason why he can’t replicate his 0.85 points per minute (PPM) of 0.85 in 2023 and average around the 68 points per game (PPG) mark.



As with most dummy halves heading into 2023, minutes are a question as coaches are looking to spell their star men at different stages.



But this applies to Harry Grant even more so and with Harry running into Penrith in round 1 and a having a bye in week 4, I’m likely to go with the Dolphin.



Of course Harry’s extra money is also a factor and you will see why as you read on. #stackedspine



Brendan Hands / Joey Lussick



Whichever Parramatta player gets the nod will be firmly locked in. If they are both named then I will reassess.



I do like the idea of making some money here and then downgrading to the Newcastle Knights rake Jayden Brailey if he is eased back in and then minutes look to increase.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Front-row</h2>



Jai Arrow



Front-row is a dead set lottery at the moment and it does make it tempting just to lock one gun in.



But money simply will not allow this and as such I am on the look out for two blokes who can score 50+ PPG and make me some money.



Arrow named on an edge is my man. Playing on an edge in 2022 he averaged 56 in 70 minutes per game. Priced on a 46 point average, yes please.



Tyrell May



In games over 39 minutes last year Tyrell scored 235 points in 186 minutes which equates to 59PPG in 46.5 minutes.



In addition to this, he had a score of 72 in 34 minutes.



Further, the Chooks needed him and I don’t see why they wont need him again?



Talk of wanting to leave and play with his brothers has raised a red flag in case Trent Robbo reduces his role as a result, but this may not happen and I only need 40-45 minutes from him to be amazing value.



Surely Robbo can respect family loyalty right!? The Chooks will be desperate for a fast start.

Shaun Lane



Averaged 69PPG in 2022 prior to last year’s injury dramas. Priced at 44 there is no way I’m not starting with him! A fit Shaun lane is a star.



Brendan Piakura



With a vacancy opening up on the edge for Brisbane it looks to be Piakura time.



In four games playing the full 80 minutes last year he averaged 55. Add in another game of 67 minutes for a score of 77 and we are laughing. A reminder that due to lower minutes across the season he is only valued on a 42 point average.



Heilum Luki



Luki replaces Josh Curran for the time being.



I was extremely keen on Curran before playing off the bench in the Bulldogs trial, but it was reported he was carrying a virus so I haven&#8217;t ruled him out if named at lock next Tuesday.



Luki on the otherhand played big minutes in the Cowboys trial and looked devastating.



If he can stay fit he&#8217;s in for a big year.

Another bloke at a new club.



Smithies comes in for Shawn Blore who reportedly has been dealing with an injury niggle throughout the Storm pre-season.



Smithies is on all reports a workhorse middle fresh out of the UK, so with decent minutes he could have huge base for a player priced at just $345k.

I haven’t even really considered not having them.



A rule that the great Dez Creek first taught me is to own the guys that scare you the most.



I can understand running without one if cash is desperately needed, but for me the other halfbacks carry too much risk outside of probably SJ (who has a tricky opening months and priced high) and Sammy Walker who would be the one bloke I would consider if team lists produce a bunch of dramas and cash is much needed.

Soooo, I had Campbell locked in for a long time until the news that he likely won’t be back until round 4.



This may be welcome news though because I was not keen to miss out on D Brown’s redemption season.



Three tonnes in four games last year pre-suspension shows what he can do and he is only 23.



Literally the only issue is that he takes up a heap more cap space!



Ethan Strange



Looks to perhaps have leapfrogged Kaeo Weekes into the five-eighth spot at the Raiders.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Centres</h2>



Jacob Kiraz



The base stat king.



Kiraz averaged 80, yes 80 across his first six rounds last year before injury hit.



That included just three tries.



As you can see there is a theme developing here and it’s all about finding value.



This generally comes from an injury effected year the season prior or a change in role.



For Kiraz, his injuries and playing through them meant he battled through some additional games to help a depleted Dogs outfit which resulted in him finishing with an average of 59.



I can’t say enough about his base and the fact he absolutely loves an offload and tackle bust which makes him closer and closer to my first picked player in 2024.



Taylan May



A return into the starting line-up of the three-time defending premiers and the talent he showcased prior to his knee injury means he is locked and loaded.

Drew Hutchison



If he can jag the number 7 jersey at the Dogs I’m really keen to get him in to sure up a traditionally tough to start CTW position.



Hutchinson has good base for a half (loves a tackle with minimal misses) and did some real damage last year especially during his game where he scored 130.



I’m hoping he can average me 50 odd and do a real job to kick start the season.



Ben Trbojevic



Ahhh Benny…



A points per minute weapon, he simply needs to stay on the paddock.



This has not proven easy in recent years and he loves a HIA failure, I’ll tell you it’s bloody annoying because I copped that last year.



Battling for a left edge role with Josh Schuster they are totally different players, so it may come down to health and what Manly are looking for.



Ben will run, Josh will pass and put Tommy Turbo in space. Let’s reassess once team lists drop for round 1.



Jesse Arthars



Xavier Savage has been replaced by Jesse Arthars.



I wasn&#8217;t convinced watching the Raiders trials that their outside backs will see enough quality attacking ball.



The Broncos wingers definitely will, it&#8217;ll be a major bonus if he does land on the right wing.

No way am I starting without this man.



KP was in career best form to end 2023 and there’s no reason it can’t roll on.



Head knocks of course linger as a concern, but at his upside I won’t be messing about. Stay healthy KP!

Everyone knows how good he can be if healthy (I’m a little worried about how much I have said that!) &nbsp;



Fullback is so stacked and Reece Walsh is very close, Drinkwater worries me a little early in the season with better defences and less base stats (though he could still dominate), whilst Ryan Papenhuyzen my main man is a huge round 6 target once we see how he return from injury, if he goal-kicks at all and he gets past round 1 Penrith and the Round 4 bye.
