POD Hunter: Unique players to find an edge

SuperCoach BBL is about to swing wide open with the early double game weeks behind us.



Hopefully you’ve come through them in solid shape and are ready to climb the rankings.



We do still need to think about Sixers and Renegades for their round 6 double game week.



However, we have a bit of time before then to sort our teams out, as well as look for a few PODs.



Last round I suggested Sixers’ swing bowler Ben Dwarshuis (5.5%) as a POD option. I still like Dwarshuis, however, another POD from the Sixers who is definitely worth considering is Steve O’Keefe (4.2%).



Up until last season (when he averaged 36.7 SC points), SOK was an SC gun with averages of 62.5 in 18/19 and 59.3 in 16/17 (all be it in three games in 16/17). He looks to be back to his best this season, scoring 26, 101 and 45 in his three games.

Another SC gun from years gone by is Renegades’ allrounder Mohammad Nabi (5.5% owned). Getting a player of Nabi’s quality in whilst he’s still a POD could be SC gold. He has past SC averages of 74.3 in 19/20 and 51.9 in 18/19.



Nabi was awesome in the 17/18 season as well, taking eight wickets from seven matches at a strike-rate of 19.4 and an economy of 5.77.



He’s always a candidate for a S/R bonus with the bat, striking at 141.21 across his T20 career. To cap it off, he plays in the first game of the next round, making him a perfect VC option.



Whilst most SuperCoaches will be focused on Ben McDermott and Josh Phillipe for the wicketkeeper position, Renegades’ keeper Sam Harper (13.5% owned) is also an intriguing option.



Harper should have a few price rises in the next few rounds, following 81 SC points in the round just gone. He could be a real POD for the Gades’ round 6 double game week.



Plenty of SuperCoaches took notice when Jhye Richardson (13.9% owned) batted at six for the Scorchers this round.

He’s a weapon with the ball and I suspect a big SC score isn’t far away. However, it’s probably wise to wait a round or two to see if the batting role is a regular occurrence.



Ben Cutting (12.9% owned) looks to have found form for the Thunder, resulting in a SC score of 95 this week. He looked good with both bat and ball in their most recent match.



The risk with Cutting is whether he regularly gets three overs to make him eligible for an E/R bonus and to maximise wicket-taking potential.



Cutting split overs with Chris Green, who only bowled one over last round. In the two matches prior, Cutting only bowled one over. I’d classify Cutting as a high-risk, high-reward selection.



Given the Strikers and Hurricanes double game weeks have recently passed, in many cases keeping certain players from these teams will be a POD play.



Well done to everyone who started with or traded in James Faulkner (9.8% owned) prior to round 2.



Faulkner has looked deadly with the ball. I’d be inclined not to buy at his price though. I’d also consider selling soon to a better captaincy option or a Renegades/Sixers player if I owned him.



I’m actually a little bit disappointed that I sold Will Jacks (17.9% owned) last round. He was a bit unfortunate this round being run out with the bat and not bowling a third over despite being reasonably economical with the ball.



I think he’s a hold if you own and he could be a discount trade-in option in future if he can turn his form around

From the Strikers, most players are still in POD territory except for Rashid Khan (46.3%).



Whether to sell Khan or not is a big decision. I’d like to hold onto him if I can given he’s already gone down in price. &nbsp;



One player I’d like to hold onto from the Strikers, at least for a round or two, is Dan Worrall (8.8% owned).



Worrall has been exceptional, particularly in the first game of this round, where his figures of 2 for 12 from 4 overs resulted in a SC score of 84 points.



His new ball bowling has been beating the bat or resulting in edges to the keeper regularly.



It’s been a while since we’ve seen Melbourne Stars’ players in action. Going left-field from their line-up, Nic Maddinson ($83.5k, 6% owned) could be a decent POD alternative to Noor Ahmad or Oliver Davies as a cheapie.



Unfortunately, it looks like he’ll bat down the order for the Stars. However, he did nab two wickets with the ball in his last match.

From the Heat, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3.4% owned) looks a good chance of grabbing a few wickets. He’s also capable with the bat. If he can move a couple of spots up the batting order he could claim a few S/R bonuses.



At the price and with no double game until later in the season, I see him as more of a watchlist player for now.



There’s certainly plenty of options for the next few rounds. I say go with your gut and enjoy!
