Squad Breakdown: Hobart Hurricanes team analysis

The Hobart Hurricanes will set out to claim their maiden Big Bash title in the 2022/23 edition of the tournament.



While consistent in recent years with four finals appearances in the past five tournaments, they’ve made it to the decider just one in that period, their second overall.



This year there’s a little something brewing in the Tassie waters, and it’s more than just a barrel of James Boags.



They’ve recruited exceptionally well on the international front with Shadab Khan, Jimmy Neesham and Asif Ali joining the ranks early on in the season, with replacements to follow.



They joined a stacked top order of stars, and a rather underrated bowling attack in my eyes.

Their draw makes them somewhat Supercoach irrelevant early on with the bye in Round 5, followed by late season double game weeks in Round 8 and Round 13 where squads will be littered with Canes.



However, with seriously relevant SuperCoach players, it means you can jag genuine stars at very low-ownership.



I’ve had to cut the analysis here a little shorter as we’re days out from the start of the tournament, and there’s plenty of content left to bash out, including the all-important team reveals!

Note that the starting XI’s will alter throughout the pre-season as new signings land, form alters and injuries strike, we’ll do our best to update as the news drops.

MATT WADE (WKP-BAT) // $120,400 // BBL11 SC AVE: 41.5



While there’s serious risk starting with Wade, it also is a move with extreme upside.



The wicket-keeper options in the opening game week aren’t great, so if they flop while Wade bashes out 50+ runs for a three figure SuperCoach score, it’d prove a masterful play.



He had a low season by his standards in BBL11, but in the year’s prior to that he had SuperCoach averages of 46.7 points (three games), 63.2 and 65.1.



I’ll probably steer towards playing more cautiously early, but I genuinely don’t mind the play on a proven, in-form gun at a value rate.



D’ARCY SHORT (BAT-BWL) // $148,200 // BBL11 SC AVE: 51.1



Short takes my interest as a serious early POD, off the back of some talk he may play a more prominent role with the ball.



He’s been bowling frequently at domestic level of late, and is believed to have overcome a shoulder issue that’s plagued him in recent years.



Recent SuperCoach averages have been 51.1, 57.5, 85.7 and 91.3, huge!!!



That’s immense upside for a player with fairly safe scoring if he is bowling regularly.



He looked seriously out of touch last season, bowled scarcely and still averaged over 50. Serious option.

BEN MCDERMOTT (WKP-BAT) // $211,800 // BBL11 SC AVE: 73.00



As brilliant as McDermott is, I do think he is at absolute peak value as the second highest priced player in SuperCoach off the back of a stellar BBL11 campaign.



Last season he scored 577 runs at 48.08, striking at 153.86.



He had a memorable double game week where he scored centuries in both innings! Talk about a season-defining SuperCoach round.



However, my approach to SuperCoach early on is finding value propositions to boost my overall squad value, and McDermott isn’t that.



Yes he could be the ultimate POD play early on, but he could just as easily start with a duck and drop lots of cash, leaving you behind early.



JIMMY NEESHAM (BAT-BWL) // $140,000 // BBL11 SC AVE: N/A



Neesham is the latest big name signing, and he does have SuperCoach relevance as an all-rounder.



In recent T20s for New Zealand, he’s scored single digit runs in five of his past six knocks, including three ducks. He’s bowled just one over in his past 10 games.



There’s also no guarantee he bats at four, he could very well bat further down the order.



He’ll be a key watch in the opening game, and if the role falls his way we can consider later on.

SHADAB KHAN (BAT-BWL) // $125,000 // BBL11 SC AVE: N/A



Khan looms as a serious early season buy despite having no double game week until later on.



The Pakistan star all-rounder comes into BBL12 off the back of an exceptional World Cup campaign, where he took 11 wickets and hit a top score of 52.



He starts at a reasonable price for a high-quality international import, and has the role that should accumulate to a high base, consistent scoring, and the vital high ceiling we all seek.



Having featured in the World Cup on Australian soil, he’ll have a good knowledge of local conditions and can continue where he left off.



TIM DAVID (BAT) // $89,700 // BBL11 SC AVE: 30.9



David will need to be promoted to at least number four before I consider buying as his role with the Canes just isn’t conducive enough to SuperCoach scoring.



ASIF ALI (BAT) // $105,000 // BBL11 SC AVE: N/A



Not for me as batting opportunities in this stacked line-up will be limited.

NATHAN ELLIS (BWL) // $156,300 // BBL11 SC AVE: 53.9



Ellis is a smokey early season POD play due to his immense ability and SuperCoach pedigree.



He took 11 wickets in eight matches last season, with an economy of 8.12.



He’s also capable with the willow, although opportunities are likely to be few.



He averaged 53.9 SC points last season and 50.3 the year prior.



A noted wicket-taker with a decent role, he’s a sneaky early play that will certainly be highly owned come double game week time.



JOEL PARIS (BWL) // $96,100 // BBL11 SC AVE: 47.3



I know our man Maxy Bryden is keeping a close eye on Paris, but I’ll only be watching in the early stages.

CHRIS TREMAIN (BWL) // $70,100 // BBL11 SC AVE: N/A



Tremain probably isn’t for me, but he is in genuine cheapie range.



The cheapie scene isn’t great to start BBL11, so if we are void of quality options in Round 1 you could do far worse than the big fella.



He wouldn’t be a start in any SuperCoach sides, so any low scores wouldn’t impact point-scoring as such.



On the flip side, if he does find a few early scalps he could generate some cash that most will miss out on.



RILEY MEREDITH (BWL) // $127,900 // BBL11 SC AVE: 44.1



Meredith is similar to Ellis in that there are probably better early options, but I do think he’s also a touch undervalued to start BBL11, and he’s also a fairly prolific wicket-taker.



He took 16 wickets in just 11 games last season, with an economy of 7.94 which is quality for a death bowler.



Look back to BBL09 for inspiration where he averaged 64.5 SuperCoach points, albeit across just six games.



I’ll likely wait for the double to roll around, but another worth consideration.
