Updated Watchlist: Batters to target in BBL12

Hi folks,



I’m back for a batters watch-list.



I’ve included allrounders in this list, as my approach this season is to maximise the number of players in my lineup who bowl.



This is due to the increased possibility of a low score for bat only players in any given match (think of an early nick off or unlucky LBW decision).



I’ll still be happy to roll with a few bat only players, although they’ll almost exclusively be players with a double game.



Now onto the list, in priority order.

<ol type="1"><li>Marcus Stoinis ($83k bat / bowl)</li></ol>



Rolling the arm over and looks in decent form with the bat. Put simply, Stoin has potential to be the highest averaging SC player this season and comes in at sub $100k.



At the peak of his powers in 2018-19, he averaged 97 SC Points. To average above 90 in BBL SC is truly incredible and shows his massive ceiling. Could even be a sneaky round 1 VC option.



2. Daniel Sams ($179k bat/bowl)



I somehow missed him on the initial list. Supercoach weapon with bat and ball. Season averages of 62, 65, 69 and 59 in the past 4 years. Lock him in if fit but have a plan in case he misses.



3. Rilee Rossouw ($105k)



The Thunder’s back-to-back doubles make Rossouw an alluring first up selection. Having smashed a 50 ball century in the recent T20 World Cup, Rossouw also took the UK T20 Blast by storm earlier this year, averaging 48 with the bat and striking at 190!



He did show some inconsistency in the recent T20WC. However, I think the experience on Australian soil will help him. At $105k his one of the first picked in my side, based on value and schedule.

4. Alex Hales ($130k)



Much in the same vein as Rossouw, Hales is difficult to ignore due to the Thunder’s back-to-back doubles to start. His ceiling is huge, as we saw in the T20 WC Semi-Final (86 not out off 47 balls).



He also has 5 x T20 centuries and 1 x T20 International century to his name. The safety of the extra games early on makes him a perfect low risk, high reward play to start.



5. Chris Lynn ($112k)



I suspect there will be some Supercoaches who decide that Lynn’s time in their sides has passed. I’d advise against it though.



Following the announcement of his departure from the Heat, Lynn went on an absolute tear in the UK’s T20 Blast, averaging 65 with bat at a strike rate of 160. This would equate to roughly 80 &#8211; 90 SC points per game. Huge!



He does come with some risk as a bat only. However, he has a double game to start and at the price you won’t lose out too much if he doesn’t fire early.

6. Matt Short ($198k bat / bowl)



After an incredible 2021/22 season, Short comes in at over $130k more than the bargain price he started at last BBL.



There’s an old adage in fantasy sports never to pick a player after a career year. However, I think you can make a case that T20 is different to other sports, given it’s condensed tournament formats.



Short’s role with the ball will be the key thing I’m looking at. If he continues to bowl 3-4 overs, as he did last season, he’ll be well worth a look.



7. Cameron Green (62.5k bat/bowl)



I’ve warmed to Green as a loop option, given there’s a fair chance he’ll be available for the Scorchers from the middle of the tournament. If he does play, I think he’ll be a must have. Therefore, I think I may well fork out the extra $20k to start with him over Cooper Connolly.



8. Ashton Agar ($161k bat/bowl)



Coming off a career best Supercoach average of 55 points, Agar could prove a nice POD for the Scorchers round 2 double. The thing that makes Agar most appealing to me is the ability to select him in a batter slot. The Scorchers have a wealth of talent with the ball, but Agar is the only one of the front line attack with dual positioning.



He benefited last season from the pressure created by a strong Scorchers team and I expect more of the same this season. His price probably doesn’t make him a value play, but I think he’ll be an option for a ‘rental’ in round 2.



9. Luke Wood ($105k bat/bwl)



The English bat has flown under the radar a touch for a player on the opening round double game week for the Stars.



With several of his teammates likely to be more highly selected, he might be the early point of difference play we&#8217;re overlooking.

10. Shadab Khan ($125k bat / bowl)



Another with brilliant World Cup form, Shadab Khan is a player you can build your SC side around. He doesn’t have a double game week to start like many others, but his all round ability will still see him have plenty of point scoring opportunities.



Ideally we need a couple of players in our starting sides who we look to hold long-term. Shadab is one I’ll be happy to lock in for this purpose.



11. Darcy Short ($148k bat / bowl) 



Had all sorts of trouble finding form with the bat last season. If he can turn it around, we know how damaging he can be, with past SC season averages of 91 in 2018/19 and 85 in 2019/20. He’s could also see more overs after having some shoulder trouble last season.&nbsp;



With the Hurricanes’ bye in round 5, you’d want him firing with both bat and ball. Given the recent signing of Jimmy Neesham I’m less certain about his role with the ball. So he’s a wait and watch for me.&nbsp;



12. Peter Handscomb (62.5k) 



Has been in decent form this season with 2 x 90s in the Marsh One Day Cup, along with a century and a 281 not out in the Shield. If he happens to jag a spot in the Renegades top 4 I think he’s worth a look. If he misses entirely he’s a no for me, as I prefer Scorchers for looping purposes.



13. Cooper Connolly (42.5k bat/bowl)



A Supercoach star without having played a BBL game. Cooper is a great loop candidate, at bottom dollar with DPP and the Scorchers playing lots of games late in the round. 



He certainly frees up a lot of cash, but as with Baxter Holt, I’m not sure we really need Connolly to start, given the number of teams with byes in the first 6 rounds.



14. James Bazley ($146k bat/bowl)



A revelation last season, averaging over 50 SC points after coming in near bottom dollar. His role is very well suited to SC and he could well kick on again this BBL.



I’m keen to see his role with the ball more than anything. If he bowls death, which will increase his wicket taking prospects, he’ll be firmly in my sites for round 3.

15. Matt Renshaw ($136k bat/bowl)



Renners returns home to Brisbane for season 2022-23 and I think he’s a great acquisition for the Heat.



He could play an ‘anchor’ role in the batting line-up. I wouldn’t mind this at all from an SC point-of-view, as it means he could see plenty of time and opportunity at the the crease.



His batting strike rate has improved over time, now sitting at over 125, making him a decent chance at SR bonus points.



When he was last at the Heat he would regularly bowl an over or two in the power play. If this happens again it will significantly increase his SC appeal.



16. Colin Munro (151k)



Anyone who owned Munro for his century last season was laughing all the way to the top of the rankings. He tapered off a bit after that, but still managed to average 52 for the season.



During their round 3 double game, the Heat play the Strikers, who Munro tonned up against last season, and the Renegades, who have generally struggled in recent BBL seasons.



One concern is that Munro hasn’t been playing much of late, not making the New Zealand XI during the T20 World Cup. Therefore, I’ll be keeping a close eye on his pre BBL form.



17. Michael Neser ($108k)



Round 3 is going to be all about the Heat’s double game. Neser is the first one I’ve got my eye on, coming in at a very reasonable sub $110k price.



His best Supercoach season came back in 2019-20, when he was playing for the Strikers and averaged around 50 SC points per game. Due to Australian commitments, he played just the 3 games in 2021-22 and 4 games in 2020-21. Assuming he’s available for the BBL, I could easily see him getting back to a 50+ SC average.



He’s also a highly capable batsman, registering a century and a half century in the Sheffield Shield already this season. This could see him notch the occasional quick 20 to get strike rate bonus points.
