Captain’s Challenge: Round 25, skippers to target and avoid

We run the rule over the best NRL SuperCoach captaincy and vice-captaincy options to consider.

NRL

Guys.

I am currently sitting in a car in 98% humidity, somewhere in between Ubud and Tirta Gangga (the Water Palace). The car is being driven by a nice man named Putu, and we are on the way to take a photo of my friend…

Patting a fish.

I have been sitting in this car now for 2.15 hours and by the time we get there I technically could have flown from the Gold Coast to New Zealand and halfway back again.

And by the time we get back to Ubud? Well, I probably could have done the 6-hour flight to Bali. Twice.

However, Sally will have a nice photo with a fish and that is really the main thing. View my Insta stories today for an insight into Insta vs Reality – because today I’m playing the role of boyfriend of Insta.

Anyhow, I’m using this car time wisely to write my second to last article to you. For you. And it will be a slightly briefer article because I have absolutely no access to Wifi in this car and only have some sporadic stats I pulled off Sally’s phone before, so bear with me here.

And let’s start with a round of applause to the 3.2% of people who played King Gutho out of the 6% who own him, and an even bigger round of applause to anybody who took a risk and Vice Captained or Sir Captained him.

Those lucky people enjoyed a Sir Captaincy points bonanza of 318 points. Which was delightful for them and quite sad for the 98% of us people who instead Sir Captained Nicho Hynes for his 132 Captaincy points.

And a little update on my team, I’m currently around 140ish points off the top 1,000 and sitting in 1,500ish place. I also have one trade that I have hoarded for three rounds sitting up my sleeve.

And somewhere over the middle of Australia on Tuesday, at around 500,753 miles above the earth (or something like that), I began to envision all the lovely carnage that would occur come Team List Tuesday that I could use my lucky last trade on.

And at around 6pm that evening when I finally got some Wifi, when I was lying next to the pool about to enjoy my first holiday mojito, I realised that in actual fact – I have a full team and only Tago and May are out.

So now I must wish some further resting carnage and look, surely Joey Taps or Teddy need a nice little rest Supercoach God Sir?

But I should probably be careful what I wish for – because there’s a chance more than a few of the big names get rested if results (and scores) fall their way.

And on that note, we must consider the very real possibility that the person you Captain, might come from a team who is racking up points at such a rate that your Captain gets a nice rest 30 minutes in.

And to the Captains we go, and of course there is one stand-out Sir Captain this week and that is our one, our only, our favourite lovable royal rogue:

Prince Nicho Hynes

And no, he didn’t quite live up to the Captaincy hype last week with…umm…66 points, but look – the man with the best wet hair in NRL has come through for us so much this season that we can forgive a little less impressive Sir Captaincy score this time.

And I’ll do a bit of a recap next week where we’ll go over all the gloriousness that is Prince Nicho – when I’m not whacking my article out in a car going 1 million miles an hour surrounded by one thousand scooters – but for now, a round of applause for you Sir and everything you have done for us, your humble subjects.

Now let us stop focusing on the past which is last round, and instead focus on more of the past which is the three games before when he scored 112, 90, and 130 points – that game including a stunning two tries and two assists.

Surely the Sharks decimate Newcastle this Sunday arvo, and I really think you must consider him as the Sir Captain who is going to lead your team to absolute overall glory.

And look, Tim did mention in his article this week that he saw Prince Nicho strolling down the street when he was writing his article, and if that is not the very sign we need I don’t know what is.

A word of warning though – if the Sharks are decimating the Knights – does our Prince get a nice early rest…?

Just something to consider.

Now some Vice Captains.

And something to remember is that if you are playing with just 17 or less players this week – you basically have two bites at the Captaincy with a free loop.

(And as somebody who somehow avoided team carnage this Round – I actually feel quite jealous of your free loop).

And if you are going to put the big C on our wet-haired hero, I’d suggest choosing a Vice Captain who has the form and upside to go really big – so you have the chance to loop that score and not risk a 30-minute Nicho performance.

And of course, we cannot look past this man vs the Warriors on Saturday afternoon:

AJ Brimson

139 points vs Newcastle last week including two tries, two try assists, two line breaks, two line break assists – and can we please just give Tim the biggest round of applause for calling the AJ gloriousness in his article last week. The man deadset has a crystal ball and deserves a medal.

His previous games of 82 and 111 points, means AJ boasts a delicious three-round average of 111 – and the man is a glistening beacon of light right now for the Titans with the form he’s hitting, and so he can most certainly wear the Vice Captaincy armband for your team on Saturday arvo vs my Warriors.

Loop without thinking twice if he goes large.

Scotty D

Let us not focus on the last three games when Drinkwater left us thirsty for more, and instead focus on the two games before that when he quenched our thirsty thirsts with a casual two tons.

(Let us also not focus on the last time he played Penrith, where he scored a 12 – we must put that out of our memory. Forever).

Because playing an unrecognisable Panthers side on Saturday evening, where basically the entire starting Panthers team has been rested – surely the Cowboys will take this one and surely Scotty D will enjoy a points-scoring frenzy!

Now if it is a bit of a beating out there, and the Cowboys are doing an absolute number on the Panthers B side, there’s a chance Scotty D gets a bit of a rest too – just another hurdle to consider in this final round…

Take a risk on a Vice Captain Risky

As the last Round of SuperCoach 2022, if you want to do one last Hail Mary in an attempt to push your way up the rankings – take a risk on your Vice Captain – especially if you have that free loop.

How many times this season have we seen an absolute random whack out an absolute ton – and using this logic – surely a risky Vice Captaincy just might be what you need to soar up those rankings.

For example choose a wingercoaster from a team who’s likely to rack up an absolute score – Taulagi might score 500 tries against the Panthers B Team. Imagine if you’d popped that VC on him – hello rankings glory.

Verdict

I am going to stay true to my most beautiful Prince and Sir Captain him one last time. And with one last trade up my sleeve – I am going to either bring in Scotty D or AJ Brimson, and pop that Vice Captaincy on him.

That is all from me this week. I’ll write a little recap article of our time together and all the exciting moments we shared like that time Mariah Carey got hit in the eye with a Kotoni Snagg at the Cobbo x Staggs Support Group Meeting, and the time I took a trip to the OutWorld to sell my soul for a man named Talakai – but for now:

I hope your Captain absolutely tons up for you, I hope you absolutely sky rocket up the overall rankings, and I hope your weekend is as glorious as Sally’s photo with the fish.

(I’ll be taking fish photography bookings when I get back to the GC – hit me up on Insta).
