Round 17 targets: Ranking the top buy candidates

The dreaded Round 17 is finally upon us and it feels like we are losing gun SuperCoach players by the day… I’m looking at you Hynes and Matto. Alas, any good supercoach knows that more carnage means more opportunity. This week really does feel like the crossroads, especially at fullback – you either buy Latrell and Papenhuyzen or you don’t.

Despite Souths tough draw to end the season, I’ll be taking the punt on Latrell to try make up some ground. As for Papenhuyzen, I just don’t see any scenario where you get away unscathed if you don’t prioritise him as the number one trade in this week against a severely understrength Sharks team.

My other two trade-ins will be Joe Ofahengaue, who can do the job at FRF until Payne Haas is back, and Jed Cartwright, who will hopefully snag 40-50pts this round and then turn into a nuff for the backend.

Here are my top 10 trade ins for the week based on point scoring potential for the round and likeliness to become keepers for the rest of the year:

I think the first 5 guys are self-explanatory for most people so I’ll focus on the last 5 guys who I’m sure a few POD hunters out there will be mulling over.

David Klemmer averages more than both Shaun Lane and Joe O, yet remarkably is 50k cheaper than both of them. Obviously, the concern is that with Saifiti back in the team he gets less minutes, however it wouldn’t surprise me if his output stays exactly the same and he continues to crank out 60-80pts every game until the end of the season.

Keaon Koloamatangi is another guy who comes into this bye round severely under-priced for a 60+ average 2RF. We’ve spoken at length about Souths draw but I’m not too worried about it if I own a guy as destructive as this, though, if you are worried then you can always sit him out on the tougher matchups.

Tyson Frizell is a man who has seemingly gone off everyones radar over the last few weeks after dropping nearly 70k in the last two weeks due to some injury effected games. He should be back on 80mins for the rest of the season where he averages 60+ pretty steadily. The Knights have an easy draw to end the season so he could be a huge POD for people trying to chase ranks with more upside 2RF players.

Moses Suli and Kotoni Staggs are both high risk high reward players. Suli has been in try scoring form over the last month or two, whereas Staggs has not. Trading in either of these guys is not for the fainthearted, especially with the outrageous plethora of depth we have at CTW this year (mostly thanks to Penrith… again).
