NRL Supercoach Round 7 Wrap: 10 Things We Learnt


<p>Well, my green arrows have come to a screeching halt after Round 7 NRL Supercoach scores were tallied!</p>



<p>Things were coasting on Thursday when <strong>Couchman</strong> did his thing, but there wasn’t much joy for The Reapers outside of that!</p>



<p>Boys were too busy eating chocolates to get any scoring done for me, it seems.</p>

<p>Not owning <strong>Marzhew</strong> really cruelled what was looking like a standard week as he went on a tear to ruin or make teams&#8217; weekends, depending on which side of the fence you sat on.</p>



<p>My FRF were a shining light, but they are for most sides, it’s the 5/8 and hooker spots that are troubling me.. </p>



<p>Not to worry! Magic Round is less than 10 days away, and boy, am I excited! </p>



<p>Not even a <strong>Ryley Smith</strong> 35 will ruin my weekend!</p>



<p>As for Round 7, Captain <strong>Paps</strong> helped, but it wasn’t enough to get me over the 1200 mark, finishing with 1184, dropping 2,236 spots to 38,834 overall.</p>



<p>Back to the Easter eggs I go&#8230;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Greg the Great</strong></h3>



<p>Righto Greg, settle down. All of us non-owners can’t be watching you have games like that, only for you to punch out a 36 the week later!</p>



<p>21 tackle busts! 21! And about 8 of them were made in one single run, where he set Sharpe up for a try!</p>



<p>Massive performance which dictated the whole round. </p>



<p>Scores were pretty steady from most, and no player had really kicked away until Greg decided he had had enough and made the Sharks look like hit pads.</p>



<p>Well done to those owners who stuck solid. </p>



<p>The Knights&#8217; attack has been dismal of late, yet he has somehow avoided low scores and continues to post solid numbers. </p>



<p>Found a try on the weekend, and the threat of Best inside him will only help him week in, week out.&nbsp;</p>



<p>I&#8217;ll be a non-owner for a while yet, I’ve placed my trust in Best, so let&#8217;s hope he repays the faith.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Ponga on the nose</strong></h3>



<p>Is the headgear too tight? </p>



<p>Is the threat of Uncle Nick ringing at any moment playing on him? </p>



<p>Or is he too worried of getting food poisoning again and finding himself in a cubicle that is all becoming too much for the number 1 man in Newcastle..</p>



<p>Whatever is happening, he needs to shake it off and quick!</p>



<p>Taking out Round 1, then his Dolphins masterclass where he impersonated a Sea World employee and had the Phins doing what he said, he has scores of 45, 35, 34 and 46. </p>



<p>He was touching $800k in mid-March, and by May, you can pick him up for a bit over 550k.</p>



<p>I have owned him for the last 3 weeks only, and this decision alone has questioned my resolve. </p>



<p>Do you sell for an almighty loss and move on, or do you hold firm, hoping he can bounce back in some way?</p>



<p>Either way, it is not a great watch.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Hudson Young is making us all look silly</strong></h3>



<p>Quick check around the grounds, and oh yep, Hudson Young, another 2 tries, another 100+ performance, this time a 126 to go with last week’s 109, and the week before 110.</p>



<p>A 5 round average of 95 if you don’t mind, did anyone see this coming!</p>



<p>Clearly not many of us, as he is owned by only 4.2% of teams before the Titans matchup! </p>



<p>The base isn’t all that great, but when you are scoring tries for fun and tackle busting like Greg, it matters little.</p>



<p>Should be the first bloke picked for NSW, so will miss the Round 12 match, but even so, is he in anyone’s thoughts? </p>



<p>Strange to think a bloke with that try-scoring capability, and locked in edge role, doesn’t garner much thought from the SC community.</p>



<p>I can’t justify the price, so he won’t even rate a look in after lockout, but please do remind me in 3 weeks’ time when he is $950k and has another 5 tries to his name.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Cleary and Panthers find their feet</strong></h3>



<p>And a return to regular programming has resumed.</p>



<p>Thankfully too, because it was getting quite unnerving week in, week out seeing the Panthers lose and Cleary play below his best.</p>



<p>He threw his side on his back and said &#8220;Come with me on Saturday&#8221; as they ground out the inexperienced Chooks. </p>



<p>Set up a number of tries, and was perfect with the boot to finish with his first 100+ score of the year with 116.</p>



<p>Despite being down on form and Supercoach scoring, he actually averages 83 this year, taking out his HIA-affected game against Melbourne.</p>



<p>Signs are promising that a big 150+ game isn’t far away, and a quick check of the draw to see who they are playing next week…</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Couch gags</strong></h3>



<p>In any other year, in any other season, we would be screaming from the rooftops about this guy. </p>



<p>We would be tearing our side apart to get him in. He would be owned by 20% of players.</p>



<p>But this year, people barely know who he is..&nbsp;</p>



<p>He averages 70, has a PPM of 1.2, one score under 60, averaging 51 minutes and is owned by 3.1% of teams and week in, week out, he gets better and better.</p>



<p>It’s the one thing I can hang my hat on this year after starting the season with him&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Toby Couchman</strong> may be the forgotten FRF out of this year, but he has been brilliant in every facet!</p>



<p>Won’t get the plaudits the likes of Tino, May, AFB or Haas are getting, but rest assured, you will feel a lot safer having him in your side.</p>



<p>Banged out an impressive 91 on Thursday night, with 50 of those coming in tackles alone.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>6. Hamstrings, ankles.. What else is going to go?</strong></h3>



<p>Whoever is sponsoring the NRL&#8217;s injury update will certainly be getting their money&#8217;s worth!</p>



<p>Another week gone, another massive injury toll. </p>



<p><strong>David Fifita </strong>was out before a ball was kicked, and that rolled into<strong> Harry Grant </strong>going down with a hamstring injury.</p>



<p><strong>Jayden Campbell</strong> joined him with an ankle injury, and <strong>Reece Walsh</strong> finished the game, but that last boot of the ball must have been enough for his knee to go, with him likely to miss 4-6 weeks!</p>



<p>And because the hooking stocks are just so flush with standouts at the moment, <strong>Max Plath</strong> went down with a foot injury.</p>



<p>You can’t seem to escape them this year, coupled with the fact that some guns are seriously underperforming, it&#8217;s forcing some trades whilst you watch some genuine trade-in options slip past you, whilst you are playing Nurse, trying to triage the most important ones.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>7. Bye planning</strong></h3>



<p>Sort of forgot we had to do that this year!</p>



<p>But we are only 5 weeks away from the first major bye of the year! </p>



<p>Only 5 games in Round 12, I’m not one to start planning too soon, but I’ll have to keep an eye on which teams play a majority and avoid those whose draw doesn’t line up.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We have learnt in previous years not to carry some plodders through the period, on the off chance they score 130, after not scoring about 40 in the preceding 11 weeks</p>



<p>We do get 4 trades into each major bye, but check out the SC Playbook page, I’m sure the Spy has spent far too long coming up with his ultimate bye planning targets etc.</p>



<p>Origin selections too will prove to be pivotal, with some banking on Daley/Slater having other plans than theirs, and what can only lead to heartache. </p>



<p>Tedesco or Edwards, Luai or Moses, Fifita or Su’a and which hooker gets either jumper.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>8. Five-Eighth woes</strong></h3>



<p>We have just 2 five-eighths averaging over 62 – <strong>Cam Munster,</strong> who scored 55 on Friday and could score 30 one week and 170 the next, and <strong>Jayden Campbell </strong>who is out for 6 weeks.</p>



<p>This season is just getting better! </p>



<p>The overall winner will either Steven Bradbury it, or use all their luck in their lifetime to get over the line.</p>



<p><strong>Galvin</strong> has his own issues to sort through before we worry about this Supercoach output, whilst<strong> Dylan Brown </strong>has one score over 61 since Round 2 and managed another 60 on Monday despite setting up a try and grabbing a line break.</p>



<p><strong>Luke Metcalf</strong> iced the game, but not before he managed only 56 with a try and a couple of goals &#8211; and don’t get me started on <strong>AJ Brimson</strong>. </p>



<p>With Campbell now out, he will take on the chief playmaker role, but what good is that if the Titans can’t string 2 good games together. </p>



<p>He has been saved in recent weeks by some junk tries, but he is on very thin ice as an owner.</p>



<p>Big call to make come lockout being over. </p>



<p>Do we just all collectively take a flyer on <strong>Wishart</strong> and hope he lands a starting role?</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>9. Part your side for Moses?</strong></h3>



<p>This is a late-night chocolate-induced bad idea, but how quickly can I get <strong>Mitch Moses</strong> into my side? </p>



<p>Did a Jesus over the Easter weekend and returned from nowhere to lift his side to a much-needed win over the Tigers</p>



<p>Plenty would have been impressed with his Monday afternoon performance, setting up 4 tries and kicked a solitary goal&nbsp;</p>



<p>Finished with 98 to kick start his 2025 Supercoach season</p>



<p>The Eels look like a different side with him at the helm, and it’s going to help the likes of <strong>Iongi</strong> who scored a double, and <strong>Lomax</strong> when he returns.</p>



<p>Hell, maybe even <strong>Ryley Smith</strong> will jag an attacking stat and score over 37.</p>
