NRL Supercoach Round 3 Wrap: 9 Things We Learnt

Might need to fill up a bucket of iced water and dunk my face into it after that Sunday night save!



Round 3 really brought the pack back, and if you didn’t own Haas or Garrick, only a miracle would have gotten you over 1000 points!



Ponga failed as a skipper choice, Cleary saw more hang time than a full forward over at the MCG and Greg the leg had a greg the leg type performance.



That’s before we even touch on Metcalf and Smith, who were so good last weekend, but so poor this weekend.



BUT&#8230; if you did own Haas and Garrick then chances are you woke up this morning with a bit of a spring in your step, and seeing some green arrows.



The Reapers of Mars didn’t own Haas, but ARey made his long awaited debut in my side and ended up taking his 120 as a loop to finish the round with 1174, a marked improvement on the past 2 weekends.



Currently ranked 64335, shooting up 30 odd thousand spots. Keep this up I’ll be in top spot in 3 weeks

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Cleary gives owners a headache</h2>



It was a welcome change to sit down and watch a game of footy with no Supercoach bearing on it. Not owning any Storm or Panthers players may not last too long though!



One player who wont be coming into any sides will be Cleary, who suffered a head knock early in the piece, and will now miss next week’s clash against Souths which could have been a big score!



He managed only 2, which likely would have dropped out in the flex, but a huge dagger for owners, with the other top halfbacks scoring well



It would be madness to trade him out with the Cowboys the following week, but at 881k, his 150 points in 3 games to start the year is massive unders

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Haas gives non-owners a headache</h2>



Whilst Cleary was giving owners a headache on Thursday, it was Payne’s turn to dish some of his namesake onto those who didn’t trade in the FRF gun!



And calling him a gun is somewhat of an understatement!



A superhuman performance form the games best. He went off in about the 54th minute, and I thought I had gotten away with it, but then came back on 8 minutes later to score more than 80 points in his final stint.



His 140 was a career high, and those who traded him in well done, even more kudos if you captained him!



For those non-owners like me, just do what you can to get him in. Is about 120k more than what he was the past week, but 2 more weeks and he might be unreachable



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Ponga fails to fire as captaincy falls flat</h2>



Its only taken 3 weeks but not owning Ponga has paid off.. Still hurting from last week’s 129 his trip up to the Gold Coast was fruitless as he couldn’t break open the Titans defence. Halleluiah!



Finished the night with a paltry 45, saved only by a late try assist to Bradman Best.



The matchup and conditions had it shaping up to be another monster score, but he and the rest of the Knight’s side – barring Best couldn’t get moving.



With the bye next week and Dylan Lucas on the sidelines, he will return against the Bulldogs and Tigers, 2 sides who are showing some stout defence. I’ll be a cautious non-owner for now, but it’s not great watch.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Garrick goes nuclear to save weekend</h2>



Never trade a gun!



An age old saying here at Supercoach, but you can add another to that – Always trade in the guy who’s just had a baby!



Reuben Garrick welcome to dadhood! A lazy 157 points to end the weekend on a high, if you owned that is, those who sold will be heading to Harvey Norman for a new TV after putting their foot through it.



The Spy came up every reasoning under the sun as to why he sold, but what an awful watch for this who did.



Crossed the line 4 times, kicked a bag of goals and never broke out of a sweat. Takes on the Eels next weekend with Turbo back and will be north of 700k for those looking to bring him in



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Pick and mix for the cheapie stocks</h2>



Round 3 was the time to jump onto those cheapies who were set to make us some big cash over the coming weeks and for the most part, they did their job. Others though might be a longer burn.



Jesse Arthurs was target number 1 for most, and he saluted with a try in the Broncos win over the Cowboys. Had a BE of -82 and finished the night with 62 and can leave his footy bag in the sheds at Suncorp, as he has 6 of his next 8 matches at Suncorp.



Tommy Starling led from the front for the Raiders, scoring 53 in a well beaten side. Spent most of his night making tackles in the middle and standing under the posts waiting for a goalkick, but that score was all base which is pleasing to say the least. Had a BE of -52 heading into the fixture so will continue to make some money even if the attack doesn’t come.



Peter M continues to impress at Souths making a bulk of tackles in the middle. Wouldn’t be playing him against the defending premiers next weekend, but a nice early season cash cow should you have jumped on.



Spicy Hot Tamale was more BBQ Shapes than chili on Sunday night, as he was starved of the ball in Manly’s demolition. Only managed 25 points, cruelling any potential big price rises. His spot isn’t so assured, and Ricky will have plenty to ponder on the way back down the Hume.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Nicho firms as no. 1 halfback but some old heads still run true</h2>



Saturday afternoon, dry track, the Sharks are lurking and Nicho is just getting warmed up!



115 points, goal kicking duties back and whole lot more points than Cleary



He remains the top HLF choice with a softish run to come, but there are a couple old heads just turning the screws a bit.



DCE was outstanding again on Sunday and was a whisker away from setting Ola up for a couple. He finished his night with 105 with 3 try assists and about 18 forced dropouts. An Eels match up awaits.



And the newest addition to my side was Adam Reynolds! I couldn’t afford Haas so I went the next best thing, a small tattooed halfback who is now the 3rd leading point scorer in NRL history!



3 round average of 98, next 3 games at Suncorp, goalkicking, setting tries up for fun and playing behind Haas.. just screams Supercoach points



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7. Iongi keeps himself in owners good books for now</h2>



Wouldn’t say he’s the flavour of the month to start the year, but he is doing enough to keep himself relevant, and in owners sides.



Jagged the only try assist of the Eels loss on Sunday to finish with 57. May still have a negative BE on Monday, but it appears his early season money making capabilities have fallen through the floor.



The Eels have only scored 32 points in their opening 3 games so it’s hard to get a gauge on how well he is going without some solid attack coming his way.



Most would have him in their Flex position, a spot that is now becoming so important to sides, so whilst he isn’t hurting owners too much, I’d be making some get out of Iongi plans sooner than later



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8. Lomax keeps running and running and running</h2>



I don’t know how sore Zac Lomax would be by the time you are reading this, but if it’s not a 15 out of 10 I’d be very surprised!



A Haas like effort on Sunday afternoon, he made 30 carries of the footy for a near 300m, he finished with 89 Supercoach points, and has scores of 47 and 79 to start the year.



These numbers don’t jump out at us, but he has played in 3 well beaten sides, all in the sunshine mind you and has only registered 1 LB assist.



Parramatta looked a little better and the attack has to come, so it’s only a matter of time before he gets a try and scores 120+.



Priced around 750k after lockout, he’s one to keep an eye on and move to if you can afford it.
