Round 18 NRL Supercoach Wrap: 10 Things We Learnt


<p>2 steps forward 1 step back it seems is the way my Supercoach 2024 is going! </p>



<p>Just can’t seem to bag 2 or 3 good weeks in a row. </p>



<p>I bit the bullet and traded in <strong>Nicho</strong> for the first time this year and owning him isn’t as fun as it once was. Looked very out of touch on Friday but I’m all in now. </p>



<p>Trades running low so he can sit there and think about it.</p>



<p>All those <strong>Hughes</strong>, <strong>Katoa</strong> and <strong>Wishart</strong> owners had the game of a lifetime on Saturday, and those non-owners like me just got stroppier and stroppier as they continued to pile the points on. </p>



<p>Those games for owners don’t come around too often so enjoy them while you can.</p>



<p>As I said at the top I am on the downward part of the rollercoaster this week, hoping its about to go up and up and up.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Turbo’s Hamstrings, despite landing <strong>Teddy</strong> as captain, only managed 1,254 putting me into 6,593rd overall.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>1. Nicho fails again. Do we &#8211; those who didn’t buy &#8211; hold off?</strong></h3>



<p>Like grabbing something at Woolies one week, only to find it even cheaper the next week!</p>



<p>The hoards of those who flocked to a cut price <strong>Nicho</strong> – me included, could have waited a week as the star half had a(nother) game to forget. </p>



<p>With a BE of 118, it was a late try where he fell over the line that saved him from blushes, finishing his night with 68.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It was another what could have been performance with several close calls, that had they have gone his way, could have had a score close to 100.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sharks seem off and Nicho doesn’t have that killer instinct to get them out of this rut it seems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That 4 week period of 142, 160, 97 and 114 seem an absolute age ago and maybe there is a world where you can forgo him and see. </p>



<p>He has a soft run and has the pedigree, but It’s been a wild year for Supercoach so who knows. </p>



<p>Maybe Anti Podding him is the play?</p>



<p>The Tigers match this weekend is very tricky as a non-owner. We saw what Hughes did on Saturday, but with the bye in 20 you could wait and see. </p>



<p>News has also broke out of Sharks HQ that Nicho has gone down with &#8220;serious&#8221; ankle injury, which might make the choice to sell a lot easier&#8230;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>2. Hughes goes to another level</strong></h3>



<p>Speaking of halfbacks that are firing on all cylinders is<strong> Jahrome Hughes</strong>!</p>



<p>My word what form he is in. Had the ball on as string on Saturday toying with the Tigers. </p>



<p>He set up 3 tries including a superb solo effort to put <strong>Will Warbrick</strong> away. </p>



<p>Non-owners just can’t seem to take a trick and those who have owned the Melbourne half had a worry-free couple of months. </p>



<p>I can’t tune into a Melbourne game without feeling like there’s a mad party going on and I just couldn’t get my shit together and come join. </p>



<p>Hughes has only had 1 score under 73 since Round 7 and Saturday&#8217;s 101 takes his 5-round average to a lazy 99. </p>



<p>He looks a season hold for mine (big call Nick) and pairing him with a <strong>Cleary</strong> in Round 20 might be the perfect play. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>3. Trell does Trell things but all&#8217;s well does not end well</strong></h3>



<p>The man provides and taketh away!</p>



<p><strong>Latrell</strong> has gone from hero to not quite zero in the space of a few days and has dealt owners and the State of NSW a massive blow injuring his foot!</p>



<p>Was a standout way back on Thursday night pumping out a huge 113 setting up 2 tries and bagging gone himself. </p>



<p>He has been the leading Fullback – nay player since his return, averaging a huge 101 in a Souths team that has found their mojo</p>



<p>But how big of a loss will Latrell be? Only time will tell but for those owners out there I don’t envy you! </p>



<p>Latrell would have broken through the 900k barrier come lockout, but who do you turn to now to fill a massive void? </p>



<p>Anyone can be picked up but no one not named Tedesco is scoring like Latrell. </p>



<p>Whoever you trade wont give you the same satisfaction as Latrell has been!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>4. Storm five-eighth grants owners more than 1 wish</strong></h3>



<p>There is a horde of those out there would be happy to see <strong>Munster</strong> in the coaches box for the rest of 2024!</p>



<p>And those are the <strong>Tyran Wishart </strong>owners who must be the happiest Supercoaches this year! </p>



<p>All those who bought whenever it may have been, again, go can about watching the Storm play in peace!</p>



<p>He has made very post a winner since taking the number 6 jersey and is the type of player that you must find to have somewhat of a crack of doing well in Supercoach. </p>



<p>He has made nigh on 400k from his opening price and looks like his cash potential won’t be changing anytime soon.</p>



<p>Spent a bit of time at hooker on Saturday which only helped his base stats, but also managed to cross for a try and kick 6 goals, something that is simply a bonus for owners since <strong>Nick Meaney</strong> left the side.</p>



<p>His 108 lifted him to a 5-round average of 84. Well done to those who jumped on!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>5. Barnett goes nuclear, earns Blues call up</strong></h3>



<p>I feel like I wrote about Mitch Barnett weeks ago.. and it was probably then I should have jumped on because he has put up some serious numbers!</p>



<p>Was in a world of his own on the weekend in a monster 88-minute performance, registering a massive 138 points! Absolute music to the ear of the slim 8.1% of owners. If he was in any other team that number would be tripled. Nothing against the Warriors, it seems though he is the forgotten man in the FRF/2RF spot. Haven’t seen those numbers since his goalkicking days at Newcastle!</p>



<p>But when weighing up options it seems pretty clear;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Base stat beast. Tick</p>



<p>Origin Call up. Tick</p>



<p>What more could we want, especially when he be slotted into the FRF spot and not have to worry about it from Round 20 onwards.</p>

<p>I have met your other 2 brothers, Round 13 and Round 16 and they weren’t kind to me. </p>



<p>What do you have in store for us?</p>



<p>The last bye round is upon us and we have already been dealt some pretty big blows!</p>



<p><strong>Gagai</strong> appears set for an Origin recall, as does his centre partner, <strong>Bradman Best</strong>.</p>



<p>Best was a popular buy after last weeks performance but it seemed to good, as he has earned an Origin recall. </p>



<p>All you can do is shrug your shoulders!</p>



<p><strong>Tolutau Koula</strong>, a popular bye last week playing in the number 1 jersey, has come away from Townsville with a knee issue and will miss the next mont.</p>



<p>To add further pain to the Manly contingent, <strong>Burbo</strong> was concussed and deemed Cat 1, meaning he will miss the all important round 19 clash. </p>



<p>Thankfully though for the <strong>Sharpe</strong> owners, <strong>Ponga</strong> will be in Maroon, so he will have the Knights 1 jersey on the weekend. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>7. Sit v Starts giving me Cat 1 symptoms</strong></h3>



<p>It&#8217;s getting to that time of year. </p>



<p>We have built a big squad and most players in our 25 are going to be playing. </p>



<p>It becomes a bit of a guessing game as to who you decide to sit and who you decide to start. </p>



<p>It always becomes the hardest part of the game at the back end of the year and it will give you more grief than picking a captain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Nothing worse than seeing a solid 80+, or worse, 100+ in the grey when the player you went with instead, scored a mealy 30 odd.</p>



<p>This is fresh in my mind, as I listened to many who thought <strong>Terrell May</strong> wouldn’t get many minutes&#8230; </p>



<p>So I played <strong>Sam Hughes </strong>over him. </p>



<p>That’s 45 points that would have come in handy.</p>



<p>I don’t think I was alone though in sitting May! </p>



<p>Problem though I didn’t have a <strong>Barnett</strong> or a <strong>Curran</strong> to replace him with.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>8. Greg the Leg is back baby!</strong></h3>



<p>Ohh its great to see! I started the year with <strong>Greg Marzhew</strong> and he was underwhelming to say the least before succumbing to a hand injury.</p>



<p>His return in Round 6 coincided with <strong>Ponga</strong> going down and with it, his Supercoach scoring potential.</p>



<p>He had a low run of scores which many thought was the end of the great Greg the leg, but in recent weeks he has found that 2023 form and came back with a bang!</p>



<p>Bagged 2 tries last week which caught the attention of many and with Ponga back in the fold, was an obvious choice for a trade in, especially priced at around 500k.</p>



<p>Walked over for a try and his base stats are back. </p>



<p>Set and forget for the year. If you missed him this week there is still time to buy with a BE of -12.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size"><strong>9. King Teddy gets the job done again</strong></h3>



<p>What more can we say about the great man! Another massive performance against a Dragons side that couldn’t lay a hand on the Roosters Fullback.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Was the most popular captain by the length of the Flemington straight with just under 20% trusting him o get the job done and boy didn’t he deliver.</p>



<p>149 points scoring a long range try and setting up 3 more, he also registered a massive 14 tackle busts! Wet and muddy conditions favoured his style and the Dragons defending like an U/14s side at times also helped</p>



<p>Those who went the POD option of a Hynes or Edwards captaincy option were left wanting as he really put the hammer down. Has a bye in Round 19 and comes back to a tantalising matchup against Melbourne in Round 20.</p>
