Round 13 NRL Supercoach Wrap: 8 Things We Learnt

Pack her up people! That will just about nearly do me for Supercoach 2024! 



All this bye planning, stressing and trades just to field 13 absolute terrible scores.



My couple of sneaky PODs did absolutely nothing for me on the weekend, which makes owning them so much harder. 



Plus a couple I had an eye on and could have gone either way seemed to go a lot better!



I did manage to bring in Jacob Preston so all is not lost, but with a tricky period incoming with Origin, restings and further byes, strap yourself in!



I can only say that you are not alone in worrying about who to bring in, who will back up and where the PODs may lie. 



We are all in the same boat and not all decision you make will go your way. A look around at the scores and they were down, but with some big depth in squads. 



Turbo’s Hamstrings fielded only 14, but my 13 included Sam Hughes to give you an indication on how I was travelling. 



I scored 855 and am in dire straits if a few Origin players decided to bung on a few ‘tenderness’ issues this coming week.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">1. Bye (bye) planning</h3>



Why bother? All that planning, stressing and trading in guys for coverage only for them to stink up the weekend!



I had grand plains for Lemuelu, Luki and Brad Schneider but all three failed to strike a blow with only Lemuelu scoring more than 50 or more.



Brad didn’t even make my top 13 and I had Sam Hughes!



Those out there that planned well in advance were hopefully in a better mood than I was on Sunday night.



And there&#8217;s more to come! 



Next week&#8217;s tricky as is round 16 so don&#8217;t go putting all your eggs into one basket, because the way this year is shaping up, they&#8217;ll be unlikely to play! 



We can trade and plan all we want but we cannot plan for coaches playing stares for less than 20 minutes and 150mm of rain!

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">2. Search party for some high flying wingers</h3>



Some high-priced wingers failed to hit the lofty heights set by owners this weekend as Kiraz, Isaako and even Marzhew to a lesser degree all failed to fire.



When teams needed Isaako most, he couldn’t strike a blow against the Raiders, scoring only 42. 



I&#8217;m not sure whether the four missed field goals counted in his score, but they should have! (They did not).



It’s been a lean run for Isaako since his 151. 



3 of his last 4 scores have been in the 40s and will drop below 700k come lockout



Kiraz couldn&#8217;t snag any attacking stats with the Bulldogs sending their attack down the Knights right hand side. 



Addo-Carr and Xerri had a fill up. However, when Kiraz went to the left wing he still couldn&#8217;t find a try!



And I threw Marzhew in just to fill in a few words, but he has been awfully disappointing in 2024. 



Shapes as a handy pickup as he has bottomed down in price at around 530k. 



I&#8217;m not sure when Ponga is back but he&#8217;s certainly an option if he can start finding some attacking stats.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">3. Cheapies stay cheap.</h3>



It was a tale of two cheapies this week as Armstrong and Talagi both fronted up for their respective sides.



Armstrong kicked the weekend off with a miserable 24 and probably had his worst game to date. 



We&#8217;ve seen some flashes of brilliance from him in recent times, but the rigours of first grade might be catching up to him. 



The wet weather didn&#8217;t help, but with a BE of -53 there was plenty of money left out there. 



He takes on Melbourne and Penrith in the coming weeks which may put a dent in his projected at price rise.

And then there was Talagi! So much talk for a bloke who didn’t even got on the field!



Owners were banking on him to be a number this weekend, but Trent Barrett had other plans naming him on the bench. 



It wasn&#8217;t ideal but, he was set to play. Except Barrett forgot to put him on the field! 



In the end he did us all a favour by not playing him, meaning his BE is still -21. 



Word on Sunday was a possible injury to Bailey Simonsson, meaning we may see him in the starting 13 next week. 



Just one (or 3) more good scores for that cash is all we as owners are asking for

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">4. I am blame Tim for Edwards&#8217; quad</h3>



Reversing trades only helped if you had someone you could flick down to FLB. If not you were stuck with him.



It’s now a huge watch over the next couple of weeks to see how it all plays out. 



Let&#8217;s assume James Tedesco plays extremely well, as he usually does, meaning it might be hard for Edwards to find a way back into the side. 



So does Tedesco hold that spot all series? 



If that’s the case he probably isn’t an option as he will miss Round 14, 16 and 19 providing he backs up. 



And how bad is Dylan Edwards quad? 



He is a tough bugger but the amount of work he does on the field, even Penrith might be wary to rush him back in this weekend. 



The Panthers have a bye in Rounds 16 and 19. I could speculate on what he will play and miss, but I’ve got a headache thinking about it.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">5. Terrell May we are not worthy!</h3>



I had a feeling the big fella was going to play increase minutes, but I wasn’t expecting 75 of the best!



It was like a warm blanket on a cold weekend watching Terrell May go about his business switching between the middle and the edge on Sunday. 



After a lean couple of weeks since his Broncos demolition, it was a blessing to see the minutes he got and the bench the Roosters ran out with. 



He barged over for a try, made 41 tackles and I think they&#8217;re still counting up the tackle busts. 



Finished the day with 116. Non-owners only reprieve is that he doesn’t play this weekend.



But with JWH potentially serving some weeks on the sideline, it&#8217;s only good news for owners.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">6. Scotty Drink wins Fullback battle</h3>



If you had said at the start of the match that Scotty Drinkwater would nearly double what Joey Manu scored, I could have only assumed Manu had gotten sent off!



I thought there&#8217;d be a serious gulf between these two, but Drinkwater threw the Cowboys on his back and registered one of the all-time great wins for the club. 



He set a try up, scored one himself and was at his light-footed, tackle busting best. Is a hold for the next 2 weeks at least, then has a bye in round 16 and 19. 



It&#8217;s a perfect time for a price rise to sell him.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">7. Parra Matter?</h3>



Totally different Parramatta on Thursday night with Gutherson and Moses back in the fold.



I was a whisker away from trading in Moses, but with the Blues about to do battle, he is next in line should something happen to either of the halves. And by something I mean one of them gets dropped.



But does the return of their main duo mean they become Supercoach relevant again? 



Gutherson to a lesser degree but players like Cartwright, Paulo and even Tuilagi looked like world beaters on Thursday.



Cartwright really intrigues me. 



Banged out over 50+ in base and played 75 minutes on the edge. 



We know it can be a wild ride the Carty party but when second rowers aren’t doing too much, its nice to know someone there can go mad on any given week 



Although it wasn’t all points and offloads as Shaun Lane came off the bench and was used in the middle. 



He did look to offload, but his attacking upside now seems all but a distant memory. 



Will be a tick over $400k come lockout and there isn’t much you can do with that!
