Spy Talk: Eyeing off the major Rd 17 targets and avoids

Well G’day!



Chaos this weekend is certainly upon us, but for individual sides it’s really about how many Origin players you have backing up and how many actually play, or play decent minutes.



I can’t answer what will happen, so keep a close eye on late mail and I would advise you to start as many players in early Friday/Saturday games as possible, because anytime you play a guy who is definitely taking the field this may save you from being short later in the weekend.



This also allows you to change the reserve from a late out to someone who might be playing Sunday or Monday. Example – Cleary is a late out.



You put your backup halfback who is a reserve (R) into the starting line up and change the reserve to someone like Max King who plays on Monday.

Whereas if you don’t play squad members earlier in the weekend and therefore if all of your bench has already played you can’t put the reserve on them and could be caught short if you have no one to move to!



Just quietly, how bloody good was Origin in terms of quality in particular a physical sense.



An absolutely battle of attrition played at breakneck speed and that will make it harder to backup for anyone who has big minutes.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Round 17 Planning </h2>



In terms of the next bye weekend, it might be a case of 10-12 players being very good!



Time will tell over the next month or so. Personally I may be a chance at 14 or 15 as I didn’t go as hard at the first bye period.



Rules of thumb I am running with:



<ol type="1"><li>Time to sell off any non-keepers who have already played the first bye.</li><li>Trade out the guys losing cash/higher value first as some who cheaper or making cash still could be sold for more value closer to the second bye.</li><li>Mid-rangers who play the second bye can easily be held and sold afterwards as long as they still offer some points and aren’t going to lose too much cash.</li><li>You also need to focus on points so don’t make it all about cash value. Guys who can scores 100s are still more valuable then a lower scorer who may have $50-70k left to make.</li></ol>



Another decision you will be faced with is that some keepers may need to be sold in order to get who you need for the second bye.



Only do this though for genuine keepers and there is still no issues with holding current keepers in your side who don’t play round 17.

Essentially everything is individual team dependent. How many do you have for the second bye? Do you need to make more cash? How many trades do you have left? Who do you need to bring back into your side after Origin? Do you have depth to cover late season injuries?



Ask yourself these questions and remember that there are still seven rounds after Origin finishes and late season restings are always a chance especially the final round!



All in all though if you can bring in a round 17 player who could score 70-100+ for a 65-70 average player who doesn’t play the bye then this is still a good trade as it’s a lot of points!



The above questions are not meant to cause alarm, it just means that some may need trades more than others and whilst the bye rounds are great for points and rank jump (like really great) you still have a long way to go after them so balance is key!!

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Targets &amp; Holds</h2>



Sharks backline – Cronulla have the most lush draw heading into the next bye and you can get blokes who are keepers till the end. Hynes, Mulitalo, Talakai for sure whilst others like Ramien and Katoa could go mad at any stage. Warriors – Titans – Bulldogs then bye coverage against an undermanned Storm!! BOOM!



Tago – He could be a bloke that some look to move on, but just hold the phone a minute and wait a few weeks if you wish to do this because Penrith play Newcastle and then the Warriors over the next two weekends! You can then assess if he is a sell to a round 17 keeper.



Mam – Lots of money incoming. Two words of warning though. It’s possible Gamble is back by Round 17. Mam may keep his spot but is young and has Melbourne and North Queensland coming up.



There is a world where he goes 40, 30, 30 then gets dropped. There is also a world where he goes 50, 60, 100 and make about $350k while offering bye coverage!



Worst case I think he still makes $100-130k which is obviously pretty good still if you have someone to downgrade. Unfortunately I don’t as my halves are stacked and I don’t have anyone to drop.

Other names that I initially jotted down a month ago are below for reference who may be targets or already in your team. Josh King for example may be a hold for a 50-60 in the bye week if you still own. This will be updated over the coming weeks –



Melbourne – Papenhuyzen, King, Hughes, Meaney, Cheese Smith, Olam



Sharks – Hynes, Talakai, Mulitalo, Ramien, Kennedy, Katoa, McInnes



Newcastle – Klemmer, Frizell



Souths – Koloamatangi, Campbell Graham, AJ, Tass, Cody



Tigers – Nofo, Hastings, Twal, To’a (if FB)



Eels – Papali’i, Brown, Moses, Gutho, Reed, Penisini



Broncos – Staggs (If no Origin), Mam



St George – Lomax, Bird, Ravalawa (Cheap)

The problem is I need to downgrade someone to do this and there are no real obvious targets outside of Mam (who I can’t get).



I could go to Molo, Peoples or Moga but it feels like a waste of a trade potentially especially if Graham ends up in Origin. Though Latrell should be back for Origin three and that spot gone.



Big decision! I could also go directly to Sivo but don’t love the Eels draw. I may do nothing and spend the weekend assessing.
