Spy Talk: Strategies to implement + trade plans

G’day Legends!



We’re one round down and a few will be flying high, others will think they are in crisis.



But there’s a long way to go and I don’t say that lightly. Personally I’ve jumped into 450th after a pretty decent start!



Today, I wanted to jot down a few general points of importance heading into Round 2.



1. Cricket is a massively up and down game. An elite batsmen can get a 0 at any time then ton up a day or two later. A small target might mean less overs for a bowler, or a top four batsmen may not even get a bat. Essentially ground can be made up (or lost) very, very quickly, so truly do not panic and just set up your side as best you can to make a run at the top spot!

2. In NRL/AFL SuperCoach a gun’s worst game will generally still be okay. It’s not the case as much in BBL SC, a gun can go very low on a bad day, so don’t get too frustrated because lots will go wrong in BBL and if your side is okay lots will go right as well! Just hope for more of the latter, but it’s a long ride! Trust who you have picked unless you have a reason not to.



3. Double game week players – As we know players with two games in one round are key to maximising points. I always like to get guys who are the most likely to bat top order or have assurance they’ll bowl their maximum overs, ideally at the death. All-rounders as we know are even better because you can get two bats and two bowling spells of out this in a double week.

4. That being said, be careful not to overload for two reasons. One is that a lot of the sides with the double round have the bye immediately after, so you need to make sure you can field a team, and if you have say six strikers all on the bye this may get difficult pending your bench depth.



The second reason is that if rain hits a fixture and washes it out and you have six of one team involved you are going to be in all sorts of trouble. For this reason and with rain around the east coast this summer I quite like a bit of variety and I think I might aim to have 3-4 blokes from a double game week side but no more. It’s just my opinion and it’s based a bit on a hunch and risk mitigation. Others may disagree! This is fine.



5. Chasing guns – I’ve been thinking about it and I like the guns approach mixed with adequate cheapies and 1-2 mid-rangers. If you own say Rashid Khan, Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Sams and Tom Curran, even if two fail in one round the chances are one or both of the other two could erupt. And what if all 4 go bananas? It won’t even matter who else is in your squad! I personally prefer this over a bunch of mid-rangers who are solid but with less upside. Unless of course the mid-rangers are really flying. Let’s see how this unfolds and which mid-rangers look the good. Plus of course you can only buy who you can afford, so it may be easier said than done.

For me this week I already have Harry Nielsen on my bench so he can come in as a cheap double game week player. I am then going to add in Rashid Khan, George Garton (all-rounder potential and death overs) and Matt Short who looked in great touch and is opening the batting plus should make me some quick coin. That will give me four Strikers. I can then sell three for their bye for three Melbourne Stars and sit a cheaper Striker on my bench for their bye.
