New approach: Why attacking DGW teams isn't everything

The SC gods giveth, and the SC gods taketh away.



Your columnist his written several times this season that not all double game weeks are created equal, and this round saw a major come down after the highs of round 10.



So let’s try say it as succinctly as possible; if a bad team plays on the double &#8211; especially against a good team &#8211; then it doesn’t really matter if they’ve got two matches as the scores are not likely to be worth it.



Sadly in the case of the Stars, COVID was definitely a factor in their poor showing in Game 1 against the Scorchers &#8211; collectively their 12 featured players (yep, they X-Factored) pooled 265 SC points &#8211; but arguably the result shouldn’t have been unexpected given the form both clubs have shown all season.

But as always, we reflect so we learn and try not to make the same mistakes twice.&nbsp;



This round helped prove that match-ups can be more important than the DGW.



The Sixers outscored the Renegades by 162 SC points. The Scorchers more than doubled the Stars output in game 1 with 305 points more than the Stars, while the Strikers thumped a weakened Heat outfit by a massive 320 points, again doubling their opposition’s output.



With five trades, consider which match-ups you like the look of the most and get a piece.



With teams almost impossible to differentiate right now, it’s a POD route which could prove pivotal to your final rank.

Given we all likely own a bunch of Stars, do you need any more? The Stars face the Hurricanes in round 13 and are not necessarily great trade-outs given their low value, so I couldn’t advocate for having more than six altogether, with only Clarke and Maxwell confident plays in a SGW.



I already own Clarke, Maxwell, Zampa, Qais and Rauf. Technically the Strikers and Heat in a DGW is a decent point scoring possibility, but can we trust the Stars this year?



Personally I don’t feel confident and will only trade if I could downgrade and bank the cash on Stoinis or Daniyal, provided they’re named.



The Strikers are similarly unattractive without Rashid. As an owner of him and Matt Short, only Siddle and Wells I could confidently own.



Henry Hunt as a basement price opener may be a decent POD to loop from your bench given his role and the fact the Strikers play the first two matches of the round.

Up against the Scorchers, you almost need to factor in an underwhelming performance in the Strikers first game, making your VC option a tough call.



The best match-up this round is arguably the Scorchers, who should have way too much class for the Strikers. Their weakened bowling unit without Rashid makes their batters enticing and I would love to own Kelly or Tye.



The second best game could be game 2 featuring both teams on the DGW. Given both of their troubles, someone will have to win and it could be a high-scoring game on a flat Adelaide Oval deck.

Ben McDermott against the Renegades could be huge, while preparing for the newly announced Sixers DGW in the final round could also pay off, with Dwarshuis, Abbott and even Moises high on the wish list.



Out of necessity my team will farewell Rauf, Rashid and Shadab who have all left. Kane Richardson will likely depart too given his high value and being on the bye. 



For trade ins I’ll consider Siddle (high ownership and VC option), Stoinis (DGW, price, DPP) and a second NPR to run loops in both batting and bowling slots. 



I will look ahead to round 13 with more confidence especially seeing the Sixers take on the lowly ranked Strikers and Heat in their DGW which could be really lucrative. 



Dwarshuis, Abbott, Christian and even Moises could be on the radar, while there’s some cheap Scorchers batters who could also come into consideration given they play the Strikers and Heat in their final two rounds.
