EPL Supercoach Gameweek 4 Wrap: 6 things we learnt

It was a very meh week for ‘xabialonsoball’, as we managed just 108 points and fell to a season rank of 1,504th.

Not owning Raya, benching Muharemovic, and playing Cherki were where my week went wrong, but nonetheless, it was a solid enough score in the end.

Here are my biggest lessons learnt from Gameweek 4…

Embed from Getty Images

1. A Red Card Frenzy

Four red cards over the weekend in four different games. Two of them in the first half, one not long after half-time. Three of them game-changing.

Starting with Crystal Palace vs Ipswich, where Palace went down to 10 in the 34th minute at 1-1. They battled hard but conceded late to lose 3-2.

A game that completely opened up because the presumably stronger team lost a player.

Elsewhere, City went down to 10 early in the Manchester Derby while it was still 0-0.

City went on to win 1-0, thanks to a very dodgy Haaland goal, but nonetheless losing a man early definitley took the sting out of the match. Otherwise, I think City could have been in for a bigger win.

Embed from Getty Images

Then there was Brighton vs Coventry, where Coventry went down to 10 men, already 2-0 down. They then went on to concede another 3 and lose 5-0.

Do I think this result is leading some people to think Coventry are worse than they are? Yes.

They are obviously bottom of the table and the only Premier League side yet to register a point, but outside of this game, they have lost to Arsenal and Manchester City, the two best teams in the league.

Their other loss to Hull wasn’t ideal, but there was some bad luck involved, and Hull have been humming themselves.

Coventry are still definitely a fixture to target, but with everyone flocking to Forest assets this week, I could see Coventry putting up a fight.

Embed from Getty Images

2. Manchester United are in shambles

As a non-United fan, you just love to see it.

Losing to your biggest rival at home, while they have one less player, is embarrassing, to say the least.

Midweek was no better, as they blew a 2-0 lead at home to Brighton to bow out of the EFL Cup.

Yes, I know they weren’t playing at full strength, but momentum exists, and it is very much working against United at the moment.

The fanbase has turned on Michael Carrick, and nothing seems to be going their way.

United will be desperate to turn things around vs Fulham this week, because after the international break they have a gauntlet of a schedule between their League and European fixtures.

I am not a Bruno Fernandes owner, but if I were, I would almost lean towards selling, especially if you need the cash.

As for other United players: sell, sell, sell.

Embed from Getty Images

3. Chelsea games WILL be high-scoring

I think there is a genuine claim to be made that Chelsea are simultaneously the best attack and worst defence in the Premier League.

The front three of João Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers are absolutely electric.

Three elite talents that seem to have formed some elite chemistry already; as soon as they find space, you are almost penciling in the goal.

Cole Palmer is a must-have and a season keeper. I would say the same about Pedro, who is currently dealing with a knee injury, which is hopefully minor.

Rogers is a tricky one in that stacked FWD position. With his hot form, I love him as a POD pick, especially for those without Pedro.

Outside of those three, I don’t think any Chelsea players are worth owning.

In fact, I wouldn’t touch a single one of their defenders, as they are on a record-breaking streak of 20 Premier League games without a clean sheet.

Every time the opposition have the ball, Chelsea look like they are about to concede. In fact, I think they are the only side to concede at least 2 goals in every league game so far this season.

Embed from Getty Images

4. Only two more Tottenham goals until Christmas, or two more Christmases until a Tottenham goal?

Sorry, Spurs fans, but I wasn’t going to let this one go without mentioning it.

One of two teams (Coventry City is the other) yet to score a goal in the Premier League this season.

To their credit, they have managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets to claw their way to two draws.

The defence is solid as expected, but the attack is just woeful.

With so many new attacking signings, Spurs’ fans will be hoping it is just a matter of time before things click for them.

With a 19th-placed Villa at home this week, surely this is the game Spurs finally get on the scoresheet.

Embed from Getty Images

5. David Raya saves the day

As a non-Raya owner who was planning to purchase him this week, this one really hurt.

A diving David Raya penalty save to deny Enzo Le Fée from the spot single-handedly caused a 16-point swing.

Yes, you heard that right. SIXTEEN POINTS.

Raya was awarded 8 points for the penalty save and an additional 8 points for the consequential clean sheet. Owners would be over the moon.

As we wondered last season, the question is: how many Arsenal defenders/goalkeeper is too many?

Most teams have at least 1 of their defensive assets already, if not 2. But is 3 too many?

I don’t think so. It’s obviously a big risk-reward play, but if you are sitting there as a Raya + Calafiori owner, I would not be discouraged from adding an underpriced Konsa into the mix.

Embed from Getty Images

6. Leeds are not messing around

I think a lot of us kind of felt this coming. Daniel Farke has turned Leeds United into a Premier League side to be feared.

A strong, physical team that is not scared to flood the box with numbers.

They dismantled Newcastle 4-1 to now sit third in the League, only behind Arsenal and City.

Most of us already own Muharemovic, who has been immense to start the season, but could it be time to further invest in this Leeds side?

If you want to double down in defence, Jayden Bogle looks to be the pick with plenty of attacking upside.

But you will have to pay a premium for him as he is currently the top-scoring player in all of the Supercoach so far this season.

Outside of that, Anton Stach is always a solid pick in the midfield, on set-pieces, and boasting some great base state numbers.

Then there is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is hard to try fit into that FWD position, but he might just be worth the punt.

He currently sits at 0.71 xG per 90, which, for reference, is higher than João Pedro and just below Erling Haaland.

Embed from Getty Images

Trades

I am yet to properly sit down and work out my trades this week (I will update the Discord once I do), but I think I will be making at least 2, if not boosting to make 3 trades this week.

I am a massive admirer of Josh King and am determined to bring him in. I watched him against Chelsea and Palace, and I just think he is a baller.

He is the focal point of a Fulham attack that has upcoming fixtures against United, Ipswich, Hull, Coventry, and Villa. It doesn’t get much better.

I also want David Raya, as I still have Tzolakis at goalkeeper, who has done a job but needs to be moved on.

I can fund this by trading out Cherki for King, which I think may be the move, but I don’t love it if Cherki starts.

On the other hand, Cherki is not a long-term hold either way, as every week is just a hope and pray that he starts,

Captains

Keeping it simple this week with a VC Palmer in to C Haaland.

Palmer is in the early game, giving me the chance to loop, and Haaland is Haaland with Sunderland at home; not much needs to be said.
