NRL Supercoach | Clem’s Captains, Round 5 Skippers


<p>From the opening whistle, it was clear this game had one lesson: we are never captaining in Sunday Spoonbowls again. Ever. </p>



<p>Not even if the alternative is captaining the water&nbsp;boy.<sup>*</sup></p>



<p><em><sup>*</sup></em><em>Unless&nbsp;</em><em>Bobby Boucher&nbsp;</em><em>joins the NRL, then we most&nbsp;</em><em>definitely Captain</em><em>&nbsp;him.&nbsp;</em></p>



<p>And cue the Benny Hill music.</p>



<p>Because when you get two teams who can’t defend and can’t attack either, and you throw in DJ Alligator playing the Whistle Song as he role plays a ref; you get a game that looks like a bunch of friends got together to play footy at the park and brought some of their friends along who play in the NRL; and you get 36 points scored but nobody tonning up…</p>

<p>Except if your name is&nbsp;<strong>Arama</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Hau</strong>&nbsp;– then you go on&nbsp;your own personal rampage&nbsp;and score a double.</p>



<p>And&nbsp;talk about the&nbsp;rub of the green,&nbsp;because I wasn’t even playing Hau until about 45 minutes before&nbsp;kick&nbsp;off because I had the reserve on Setu Tu.</p>



<p>It’s a funny game this SuperCoach, and I will absolutely take it, and yes, I have bought myself a lotto ticket.</p>



<p>And it was 1,375 points this week for the Friday Beers as we go on our own personal rampage to beat the Spy. </p>

<p>Currently sitting in 3,110 place overall, watching new recruit Thomas Jenkins cross for his 10<sup>th</sup> try of the season was the highlight of my weekend. </p>



<p>And while Flanno plays winger roulette for another round, because that pesky right wing is <em>definitely </em>the issue, I am making my 5<em>t<sup>h</sup></em><sup> </sup>trade of the season and saying goodbye to Setu Tu, and thank you for your service; it’s truly not anything you’ve done.</p>



<p>This week, there’s one big question:</p>



<p>Go with the pack and a&nbsp;<strong>Herbie</strong>&nbsp;VC into Captain&nbsp;<strong>Reece</strong>; or take a punt on a pod and reap the rewards if you pull it off, especially if you’re trying to make up ground.</p>



<p>Therefore, this article shall be dedicated to&nbsp;the&nbsp;Spy and all the reasons why he should&nbsp;trade in&nbsp;AND&nbsp;Captain his boy&nbsp;<strong>Royce</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Hunt</strong><strong>&nbsp;</strong>as he attempts to make up the 24,000 places he is currently trailing me&nbsp;by.<sup>*</sup></p>



<p><sup>* </sup><em>A note</em> <em>to everyone else that’s not Spy – pls don’t do this. This is a special tactic in our personal battle, because he is very suggestive and starts to panic that he’s missed something in his 872 hours of pondering his team when ideas like this are presented to him…</em></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Herbie</strong></h3>



<p>At time of writing, around 700% of SuperCoachers have got the VC on Herbie, and the rest are taking the straight Thursday night Captaincy or own <strong>Reece</strong> <strong>Walsh</strong>.</p>



<p>Every week for four weeks now, we’ve been certain this is the week Herbie tons.&nbsp;</p>



<p>And surely,&nbsp;<strong>THIS</strong>&nbsp;<em>is</em>&nbsp;the week.</p>



<p>Playing Manly at home, his base + power through the roof, an 82-point 3-round average despite no tries in those 3 games, Herbie is the safest VC of the round&nbsp;– don’t overthink it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>And now all that’s left to do is gather together tonight, to collectively help him get over this 85-point ceiling he somehow offloads his way to, and help him get to that elusive ton.</p>



<p>Cue the sound of manifesting ringing out across the nation.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tommy T</strong></h3>



<p>Okay, and well, apparently manifesting doesn’t always work, because everybody’s seen the infamous photo of Seibs bathed in golden sunlight manifesting a Manly win – (it was really quite beautifully serene). </p>



<p>And I know they beat their bye round, but Manly will surely come into this game HUNGRY to get that elusive win because the Dragons will get a bye to try and beat too.</p>



<p>And 2026&nbsp;<strong>Tommy</strong>&nbsp;<strong>T</strong>&nbsp;is looking like he could be the&nbsp;reincarnation of 2021&nbsp;<strong>Turbo</strong>.</p>



<p>A 3-round average of 89,&nbsp;2 tries to go with his 4 for the season&nbsp;on Thursday night,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Manly’s attack running through&nbsp;him – Tommy T&nbsp;looks like he can spread his wings at any moment and punish anyone who doesn’t own him.</p>



<p>Add to that the fact that&nbsp;Tommy T likes doing a number on the Dolphins – he scored 180 points vs them in Round 25 last year…</p>



<p>Brb – I’m off to do a second boost to try and fit Tommy T into my team…</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Nathan Cleary</strong></h3>



<p>117 points last round, including 4 try assists and 32 points in goals, and honestly – I cannot believe we didn’t all Captain&nbsp;<strong>Cleary</strong>&nbsp;because it was so obvious.</p>



<p>Captain Hindsight&nbsp;is a beautiful thing.</p>



<p>Okay, and playing the Storm, who have only given up 52 points to Halfbacks this season, you might be tempted to not go here…</p>



<p>Except the Storm aren’t quite the Storm (oh to be a fly on the wall in the sheds in Townsville last Saturday night), and the Panthers have proven this season that there are no ‘hard’ games. </p>



<p>Instead, they just keep scoring more and more points, and getting more and more exy and harder to get in for the SuperCoachers who held off because their draw ‘opens’ up in Round 7.</p>



<p>I’m honestly considering the <strong>Casey</strong> x <strong>Jenkins</strong> x <strong>Ipap</strong> stack, and I’m not even kidding.</p>



<p>A 3-round average of 98 screams at least a VC to me (if I wasn’t so loyal to Herbie).</p>



<p>And I would like to ask the one dedicated Couchman Disciple who is currently trading Cleary out for <strong>Rouchman</strong> – what do you know that the rest of us don’t???</p>

<p>An 88-point 3-round average, 95 points vs the Dolphins last week, including a try, a line-break, and an assist – we’re <em>SOOOOO</em> close to that elusive ton fellow <strong>Walsh</strong> enthusiasts…</p>



<p>Playing the Titans&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;the same Titans who only just scraped to their first win of the season last Sunday because the Dragons still have a few wingers to try before they get their team quite right – surely,&nbsp;<em>SURELY</em>&nbsp;we are getting a Reece ton&nbsp;on Saturday night.</p>



<p>The Titans have leaked 65+ points to fullbacks in 3 games to start the season, including an 83 to Hammer and a 96 to Scotty D&nbsp;– it’s Reece time to shine – I’m jumping on that rollercoaster and enjoying the ride…</p>



<p>At 16.9% Captained across all&nbsp;SuperCoachers&nbsp;and 39.4% Captained in the Top 10%&nbsp;…</p>



<p>if we go down, we all go down together.</p>

<p>With almost the entirety of SuperCoach going the Herbie x Reece route, there are a few pods in the Dolphins v Manly game you could take a flyer on this round if you have a special feeling.</p>



<p><strong>Toia</strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Marky Mark</strong>&nbsp;teamed up for a 4 try assassination against Manly’s&nbsp;left&nbsp;edge last Thursday night.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you own <strong>Issako</strong> (82-point average); <strong>Averillo</strong> (77-point average); or new cult hero, <strong>Finefuaiki</strong> (89-point average) – you surely must be tempted into a punt at a VC on one of them.</p>



<p>10 tries between them this season…what will that tally become by 10pm tonight…</p>

<p>Four-day weekends should be mandatory.</p>



<p>And also, because Bobby Boucher isn’t playing this round, as if I’m not going my usual Herbie x Reece combo; but I do love the pod play if you’re looking to make up some ground, or you have a very special feeling on a Dolphins player…</p>



<p>And on that note, I’m off to start praying at my Herbie shrine. </p>

<p>…like finding all the Easter eggs 3 days early…</p>
