Supercoach BBL Final Word: Round 8 captains, PODs, weather watch

Rain, rain, go away, come again on a non-BBL Supercoach day…



We’ve had a pretty good run of luck with the weather this season, but it came crashing down in round 7 with the Sixers and Hurricanes game abandoned after five overs.



Generally this wouldn’t be too diabolical, but with the Canes’ on the double and the Sixers coming off a double (with another to come), Supercoaches were heavily invested in both teams.



Worse yet, it was the final game of the round and the early forecast wasn’t too concerning so it really was a recipe for disaster.



Round 8 looks even worse, so stay on your toes and be prepared to tweak your squad accordingly if the rain is rolling in. More on that below…



The Cooma Stallions hit a flat spot with only 706 points to drop a long way to 2500th overall.

I had six players invested in the rain impacted game, bugger!



I certainly wasn’t alone as all Supercoaches were impacted negatively, but geez that one hurt after the round had gone fairly well until that point.



Hopefully we can bounce back over the final two rounds to push for a three digit finish, it’ll need to be big!

Verdict: Things looks bleak. Rain is set to potentially impact three of the four fixtures, including both of the Renegades games.



Marvel Stadium does have the retractable roof which they&#8217;d lock in if the rain is threatening.



There’s nothing too severe, but as we saw at the SCG yesterday it doesn’t have to bucket down to call a game off.



If play looks to be limited heavily in the opening game of the Renegades double you could go against their players, but as it stands there should be more than enough play to justify sticking with them.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking ahead</h2>



The Melbourne Renegades are on the double game round this week.



The Sydney Sixers have the bye in round 8, followed by another double in round 9, so don’t offload too many of their players.



The Hobart Hurricanes have the bye in round 9, so cut ties with any of their players unless you need them for looping purposes in the final round.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Super PODs</h2>



In the Final Word, we’ll look at the super POD options, the players at under 10% ownership (among the top 10% ranked coaches once rankings roll in) that could send you soaring (or falling) up the overall ranks.



They come with big risk, but the reward is immense if it comes off.



Last week, Hassan Khan produced a decent 62 points for those that jumped on early ahead of the Gades’ double.



Xavier Bartlett &#8211; $148,100 – 11.2% and Matt Renshaw &#8211; $177,700 – 11.2%



The Renegades fixtures are threatened by rain, and the Sixers on the double next week are already well owned by most.



For that reason, you might be positioning yourself to launch into some PODs on the single game week.



The Heat don’t have another double, but this pair are absolute class and can go large on their day.



Renshaw in particular has flown under the radar this season with most probably underestimating his role with the ball.



He’s bowled in his past five matches, taking four wickets in that period.



He’s even bowling three to four overs at a time at different stages.



Add to that his form with the bat and you have a Supercoach weapon, averaging 73 points for the season with very few owners.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Captains</h2>



It’s a wide open week for skippers, even more so should weather impact the opening game.



There’s no standout option at the Renegades, with question marks over the form and Supercoach role of most players.



As it stands, Hassan Khan is the most popular option, followed by Josh Brown and Will Sutherland.



With Zampa likely back tonight, Khan’s overs aren’t guaranteed.



Sutherland hasn’t always bowled his full allotment of overs, and he’s batting a fair way down the order.

Brown is bat only which is extremely risky to target, despite his strong form of late.



I don’t recall a tougher week this season with no standout picks.



I’m leaning towards Khan who is batting around about six and has had some success this season, while he should still get three to four overs.



With no guns on the double, and rain threatening both Renegades games, I’d be happy to captain another player should my VC score sub 25 points.



The Stars v Strikers game looks all clear on the weather front, so Matt Short becomes the obvious target, followed by Marcus Stoinis.
