Supercoach BBL Final Word: Round 6 captains, PODs, weather watch

Five rounds down, four to play…



We’re passed the halfway point of the Supercoach season, and the Ashes is nearing an end.



As a result, we’ll have to cast an eye ahead to the impact of likely Australian players returning to teams and how that’ll affect popular Supercoach assets.



For example, the return of Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja and Michael Neser in coming rounds may well have a negative impact on the popular Jack Wildermuth.



The Cooma Stallions have bounced into some form of late, scoring 960 points to rise into 1,800th overall.



We’re trending in the right direction and towards a far more respectable ranking after an abysmal start to the BBL15 campaign.



Let’s take a look at the Final Word ahead of Supercoach BBL round 6.

Verdict: Monitor tonight’s forecast in Coffs Harbour closely as it may have a big impact on trades around Sixers players if storms arrive, but for now it should be okay.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking ahead</h2>



The Sydney Sixers are on the double game round this week.



They also have the bye in round 8, followed by another double in round 9.



Be wary of overstocking players though as ideally you don’t want to sell any, but don’t want to be left short on numbers for the round 8 bye.



The Hobart Hurricanes have the bye this week, but a double in round 7 alongside the Strikers, so don’t sell any of their players.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Super PODs</h2>



In the Final Word, we’ll look at the super POD options, the players at under 10% ownership (among the top 10% ranked coaches once rankings roll in) that could send you soaring (or falling) up the overall ranks.



They come with big risk, but the reward is immense if it comes off.



Last week, Jamie Overton made a mockery of this section after a number of strong weeks in a row.



For the first time in as long as I can remember, possibly ever, Overton didn’t bowl for the Strikers on a Perth deck that was offering a bit for spinners.



It resulted in just 21 points for the round! Bludger…



Will Sutherland &#8211; $122,900 – 5.3% ownership



Sutherland has been one of the best players in Supercoach in recent seasons, averaging a career high 63.6 points in BBL14.



This year he’s started a little slower as wickets have eluded him, averaging just 46 points so far.



He’s owned by next to nobody with the Renegades not having a double so far, but it is coming in round 8.



He can go large at any point, so there’s a play to get him early before anyone else inevitably brings him in for the double.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Captains</h2>



The Sydney Sixers are on the double, meaning they’ll be the primary option for vice-captaincy (and likely looped captain).



Jack Edwards will be far and above the most popular option, boasting one of the best roles in the game that’s seen him rock an 89 point average so far.



While you’d be brave to go against him, there’s genuine merit in going another bowler with a decent role.



Ben Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott both present great opportunity.



Dwarshuis in particular has been used as a pinch-hitter in recent seasons, coming out to bat at number five in his last game, for a golden duck…



Abbott is genuine class and can take bags of wickets on any given day.

If you’re chasing rank after a poor start, I’d roll the dice on either of these two.



However, Edwards is once again the smart play.



Should the vice-captain go sub 25 and you’re wanting to captain another player, it’s really down to the two popular men that have been excellent this competition.



While he hasn’t been at his flamboyant best with the bat, Matt Short is bowling plenty of overs and is showing some signs of his best with the willow.



Should a captain be required, I think he’s the best play at Adelaide Oval followed by Cooper Connolly.
