Supercoach BBL Final Word: Round 4 captains, PODs, weather watch

Supercoach Big Bash is now entering a period of rapid fire rounds, with a number of three day game weeks that’ll keep us on our toes.



Round 4 and 5 run for just three days each, so it’s important to stay up to date with the quick swings incoming.



Fortunately, that’s what we’re here to do at SC Playbook to do the legwork during a very festive period of the year.



We begin to enter a period of the season with byes to come in every round of the season barring one.



This presents opportunity for auto-emergency looping and vice-captaincy looping which is extremely beneficial.



The Cooma Stallions saw some very much needed green arrows last round, scoring 1,108 points to rise to 5,600th overall.



It’s still extremely underwhelming with loads of work to be done, but we’re at least heading in the right direction.



Let’s take a look at the Final Word ahead of Supercoach BBL round 4.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking ahead</h2>



The Perth Scorchers are on the double in round 4 and are the priority targets this week.



The Melbourne Stars are on the bye, but have another double again in round 5, so hold onto those players where possible.



Looking slightly further forward, the Sixers have the bye in round 5 which is actually quite beneficial for looping purposes, followed with a double in round 6.



For that reason, look to hold onto the likes of Jack Edwards as you’ll want him back, unless you desperately need his cash injection.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Super PODs</h2>



In the Final Word, we’ll look at the super POD options, the players at under 10% ownership (among the top 10% ranked coaches once rankings roll in) that could send you soaring (or falling) up the overall ranks.



They come with big risk, but the reward is immense if it comes off.



Last week, Riley Meredith delivered for POD hunters at 10.8% ownership with 134 points on the double in the only selection of the week.



Brody Couch &#8211; $63,400 – 8.8% ownership



First and foremost, if you’re going with Brody Couch make sure he’s named for tonight’s opening game of the Scorchers’ double.



He’s a POD play in the sense that at a bargain price you don’t need to expect a huge output from him, but it is possible.



At just $63k he frees up bucketloads of cash to splash on genuine guns, while also present a potentially easy path to cash generation, much the same as Mitch Swepson last round.



He’s not locked in for both games of the double, but he should be available for both where there’s plenty of scoring potential for the speedster.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Captains</h2>



The Scorchers are the only team on the double this week, so it’s fairly unlikely we’ll be looking elsewhere.



Put the vice-captain on a Scorcher and if they happen to score say sub 20 points it’ll present an opportunity to put the captaincy on someone like Matt Short or Jack Edwards.



The obvious choice is Cooper Connolly who has started the season in blistering fashion with a 102 point average.



He has a superb role batting up the order and bowling frequently for the Scorchers.



If you don’t want to overthink the decision, just put it on Connolly and enjoy the show.

If you want to overthink it like me, there’s one other viable option for those daring enough.



Aaron Hardie has started the season in poor form which will see next to nobody captain him.



It’s for pretty fair reason with the respective form of himself and Connolly.



That being said, he arguably has a better role with a spot batting in the top 5 (Inglis is available for game 1) and more assured of overs than Connolly.



He’s a world-class international cricketer that could explode at any minute.



If you’re willing to gamble, I don’t mind the play at all.



If your vice-captain does fail, Matt Short is the obvious captain if you own, otherwise the conditions bode well for Jack Edwards to thrive down in Melbourne.
