Thommo’s Takes | BBL Supercoach round 2 wrap


<p>Welcome to our review article at SC Playbook where we review the action from the previous round and see what impact it had on our side and what we can learn from it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Round 2 is done!&nbsp;</p>



<p>An absolute run fest at the Gabba with the record books being rewritten everywhere. Some massive scores from double week players with Wildermuth, Renshaw and Shadab Khan all going very well.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Other double round players underperformed and we saw some genuine SC guns or more popular players score well with Connolly (114 SC points), Philippe (146 SC points), Edwards (145 SC points), Jordan (136 SC points) and Short (95 points) all posting noticeable scores on a single game week.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The age old question whether double week players or those who have a premium role are better trade ins for your side!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Heat vs Scorchers</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Heat won by 8 wickets</em></strong></p>



<p><strong>Takes:</strong></p>



<ul>
<li>One change for each side coming into this clash. Jhye Richo back in for the Scorchers replacing Beardman. Dooley was omitted in place of the returning Kuhnemann.</li>



<li>So many epic SC scores to make note of it is hard to know where to start!</li>



<li>Wildermuth easily eclipsed his highest score in the BBL of 31 to inspire the Heat to an epic victory. 110 not out and 1/47 off his 4 overs where he picked up a wicket in his last over. 179 SC points and those who VC’d him or straight C’d him would be delirious.&nbsp;</li>



<li>His partner in crime Renshaw also made a magnificent ton and took advantage when he was recalled following an early Richardson no ball. 147 SC points and a great POD for those went traded him in this round.</li>



<li>Bartlett bowls the right overs and fields in the right spots to get wickets and catches. 64 SC points.</li>



<li>All Heat bowlers were ultra expensive but all completed their 4 overs. No cheeky over for McSweeney or Renshaw. Not great if you are a Heat fan, but perfect if you have a Heat bowler in SC. Getting 4 overs even when being carted around the park.</li>



<li>Only 1 wicket for Afridi who continued a slow start in the BBL. He wasn’t helped by those in the field costing him some wickets though to be fair.</li>



<li>Allen hit some massive sixes on his way to 79 runs off just 38 balls. 114 SC points and rewarding those who went him at WK massively.</li>



<li>Cooper continued on his fine form from game 1 and virtually matched Allen with 77 runs off 37 balls. He eventually got some overs (2) and was by far and away the most economical bowler on the night and was criminally under bowled. This either shows he really is the sixth bowler and is only going to be used in parts or they may increase the amount he bowls in response to this game. It is something we need to monitor before their upcoming double, but in saying that even though he might be a pure batter and very expensive he will be hard to overlook before round 4.</li>



<li>Middle order hitters Hardie and Hobson showed they can score quickly and activate that magical strike rate bonus. Hardie bowling his 4 overs as well reaffirms our initial thoughts that he has a plumb SC role.</li>



<li>Marsh practically the only person for Perth to miss out on the batting fun. He could be cheap as before the Perth round 4 double. Also if he didn’t bowl when everyone was getting carted around the Gabba it looks like he won’t ever bowl in the BBL for thus year.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Injury watch for McSweeney and Bryant before next round. </li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Thunder vs Sixers</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Sixers won by 47 runs</em></strong></p>



<p><strong>Takes:</strong></p>



<ul>
<li>One change for the Thunder. Captain Warner was back and Davies made way for him. The Sixers with two changes. Ins were Kane Richo and Murphy. The outs were Perry and Kerr.</li>



<li>Philippe continued on his fine form from round one and scored 96 off just 54 balls. This combined with a stumping meant a mammoth 146 SC points and he could be a season long hold for those with him at the keeper position. The only thing to figure out is what do to for those two bye weeks the Sixers have.</li>



<li>Babar Azam with his best knock of his brief BBL journey thus far. 58 off 42 deliveries.</li>



<li>The fact that the Sixers lost their second wicket so late in their 20 overs meant the batting order was rejigged. A reminder for us all that compared to other (earlier) BBL tournaments, batting order are more fluid and match dependent.&nbsp;</li>



<li>McAndrew and Topley were expensive, but picked up wickets which boosts SC scoring. 46 and 83 SC points respectively.</li>



<li>The Thunder have 6 genuine bowlers, so the sharing of overs is something to note for them. 3 overs for Tanveer and Shadab and only 2 overs for Chris Green. A blow for people who thought of him as a safe allrounder to trade in this round.</li>



<li>Billings and Shadab the only Thunder to post anything significant. Warner batted at 3 instead of his usual opening role.</li>



<li>Jack Edwards didn’t get much time with the bat, but showed value with the ball bowling powerplay, surge and a death over. A genuine allrounder role and 5/26 lead to an epic 145 SC points for owners. It wasn’t too late to jump on after round 1!</li>



<li>Joel Davies = cheapie alert? Promoted at the end, potentially for left and right hand batting combinations is my read of it and then some tidy bowling 3/24 off his 4 overs. 102 SC points, a negative breakeven and potentially decent job security with Murphy in Boxing Day Test calculations.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Renegades vs Hurricanes</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Hurricanes won by 7 wickets</em></strong></p>



<p><strong>Takes:</strong></p>



<ul>
<li>One changes for both sides. Zampa in for Spores and Stanlake out for ward who opened the batting.</li>



<li>Stanlake was a significant out and changed some roles of players in the side. Rehan Ahmed bowled 4 overs for the first time and was tidy with 1/25. Owen bowled 1 over. Slightly promising but far, far removed from any sort of allrounder role. No Chaudhary overs. Team list will be very important before their double next week and if they pick another bowler in place of a bat.</li>



<li>CJ show. 4/19 off his 4 overs, including a first over maiden. A huge SC haul of 136 SC points. A cash rise and form before their double next round. In true SC style he probably flops next round but round 2 owners or those that had the E on him will be ecstatic.&nbsp;</li>



<li>No overs, demoted to number 3, but this didn’t phase Nikhil Chaudhary. 79 off 38 balls including one out of the stadium. 124 SC points. Well done to those that have them on field in some capacity.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Ellis again, a tad expensive with his figures. Still bowling those crucial and tough owners though. A 3fa is around the corner for him. Hopefully across their double!</li>



<li>A low scoring game for the Renegades with a top score of 59 SC points of Seifert. Not good for any current owners, but it could help with future owners as we look more closely at Renegades at reduced prices when their schedule picks up. </li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Thunder vs Heat</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Thunder won by 34 runs. &nbsp;</em></strong></p>



<p><strong>Takes:</strong></p>



<ul>
<li>An unchanged Thunder team. One change for the Heat. McSweeney out with injury and the international Tom Alsop was back for his first game of the season. Xavier Bartlett took over the captaincy in the absence of Nathan.</li>



<li>Heat leaking runs again. They are the obvious team to bring in some batters against after conceding very large totals in their first 3 games.</li>



<li>Gilkes and Konstas showed the value of a double game round and made up for poor scores in their first game. 106 SC points and 88 SC points respectively.</li>



<li>Poor Bancroft owners. Clearly the best Thunder bat in the first round. Shuffled down the order and didn’t even bat in this game. Batting line ups continue to change.</li>



<li>Wildermuth continued on his fine round, but did more damage with the ball with a tidy 2/25 off his 4 overs. Not many runs with the bat but he top scored again for the Heat in this game with 71 SC points.</li>



<li>Heat continued their tight but expensive bowling unit. A rare over for Renshaw is worth mentioning though.&nbsp;</li>



<li>The Heat’s innings never really got going, Renshaw batting at number 3 continued his decent form with 43 runs off 28 balls.</li>



<li>Wicketless overs (wicketless across the double actually!) from Green and Tanveer. Very surprising indeed! They will be cheaper later in the tournament if they get conditions to suit!</li>



<li>Shadab rewarding those who went the C option this round. 4/24 off his 4 overs and registering 118 SC points in a fine bowling performance.</li>



<li>Again overs shared amongst 6 key bowlers for the Thunder.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Just checking the scores. Bartlett with the 2 SC points in this game! Very low for someone who bowled 4 overs and faced a handful of deliveries in this match.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Strikers vs Stars</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>Result: Stars won by 6 wickets.&nbsp;</em></strong></p>



<p><strong>Takes:</strong></p>



<ul>
<li>An unchanged Stars line up. One massive SC change for the Strikers with popular looper Wadia in for the ill Luke Wood.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Matt Short the only Adelaide batter to make a decent score. A circumspect innings of 56 off 42 balls. He bowled some wicketless overs and was involved in the field to top score with 95 SC points for the Strikers. Not the total allrounder role but the top order bat who will roll his arm over each game is still a SC gold role.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Scott still batted at 4 for Adelaide but no overs at all.</li>



<li>Maxy for the double = ? Came in at number 4 but didn’t last long. Opened the bowing just like the first game and ended up with figures of 0/14 off 2 overs. All it takes is one explosive Maxwell innings to make him worth the pick for the double, but there are some red flags. He is a bit like Matthew Short (fielding points, rolling the arm over but nowhere near a lock for 4 overs) but doesn’t have the premium batting position to make him the absolute no brainer of previous years.</li>



<li>Stoinis is the bloke sharing the 5<sup>th</sup> bowler duties with Maxy at the moment. He bowled the 20<sup>th</sup> over in this game which is noteworthy and guided the Stars home with 32 not out off 22 balls. Some valuable SC points and strike rate bonus activated when he hit that final ball for 6. Thanks Hilton for blocking the last ball of the previous. 2 expensive overs but he did jag a wicket. An obvious option on the double for those who don’t have him yet.</li>



<li>Campbell Kellaway against was stylish playing the number 3 anchor role. A cheaper batting option for their upcoming double.</li>



<li>An injury in the field for Rogers meant a promotion up the order for Sammy Harper and he took full advantage. Someone who has overall underdelivered as an SC option over the years, do we need to forget the past and cease on him for the double, or is this yet another tease from the Stars gloveman. Nevertheless he set the Stars up with a mature 55 off 36 and top scored for the Stars with 105 SC points.</li>



<li>Siddle tidy again. I can’t trust he will play both games for the double.</li>



<li>Tom Curran knocked over the Strikers early on and finished with 3 wickets. He was listed to come in at number 8 and is yet to bat in the two games thus far. We need to treat him as a bowler rather than the bowling allrounder we have seen in other years.</li>



<li>Haris Rauf with 3 wickets as well. He just attacks the stumps and wants wickets, great to have in an SC selection. We don’t mind if you go for runs, as long as you attack and take wickets!</li>
