Supercoach BBL team reveal: Tim Williams drops his Big Bash squad

The Cooma Stallions Supercoach Big Bash side for Round 1 is locked in!



By locked in, I of course mean this is the first of what will be countless iterations of my team.



The boys will be looking to improve on a season rank of 314th in Supercoach BBL14 after a diabolical final round cost me a crack at the top 100.



At the time of writing, we’re a bit over a month out from the start of BBL15.



As it stands I’m happy with how my team is set up, despite a few inevitable changes that may be out of my hands.

Between now and the season opener on December 14 we’ll have injuries, withdrawals, signings and international call-ups among other factors that’ll alter our Supercoach teams.



But for now, below is my squad which I’ll frequently update across the BBL pre-season.



The Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes are on the round 1 double making them the priority targets, while the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder have the round two double so I’ve stocked up on a few of their contingent in preparation.



The big omission at this stage is Glenn Maxwell at over $200k with no double until round 3.

While I’m relatively happy to start without him, his games to start the season are on extremely batter friendly decks at the MCG and Adelaide Oval which scare me.



I do however have $130k left in the bank which I can spend up on Maxy or another gun.



Once I find the right player closer to round 1, I’ll likely add a dual position non-player to utilise for looping purposes.



As I said there’s plenty to play out yet, but here’s how my squad stands for round 1.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WICKET-KEEPERS</h2>



Ben McDermott II WKP-BAT II $79,500



One of either Ben McDermott or Matty Wade will start as my wicket-keeper for the opening round Canes’ double.



He had a lean BBL14 campaign with an average of just 30.1 points, in the season prior he averaged a much healthier 47.0 points.



To see his upside, look back to BBL11 where he averaged 73.0 points across 12 games!



I don’t actually think he’s the lock that I’ve seen many suggesting, but at the price with his upside and draw he’s hard to ignore.



Reserve



Joe Clarke II WKP-BAT II $68,600



I’d really like a non-playing wicket-keeper for looping purposes, but as it stands there isn’t really one.



Lachlan Shaw is the best option, but the Sixers draw with plenty of early games doesn’t really free him up as a loop option until round 4.



This leaves a dirt cheap Joe Clarke who has class and BBL pedigree.



The Englishman is a Big Bash veteran that was limited to just two games last season.



The explosive wicketkeeper-batsmen averages 26.18 in his T20 career, striking at 144.20.



He’s been in decent form across the domestic UK summer and will be one to watch in the early stages.



He’s unlikely to feature for my starting team until the double but can hopefully bank some cash leading into round 3.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BATTERS</h2>



Mitch Owen II BAT II $192,800



Don’t overthink this one, Owen is the man of the hour, or year in Australian cricket circles…



Owen blew BBL14 apart as the top run-scorer with an average of 45.20 at a strike-rate of 203.60, simply mental…



He also began to roll the arm over later in the competition, taking three wickets across nine overs.



If he features regularly with the ball this season as he has in Australian colours he’ll be a near season hold.



Five games in the first three rounds and the potential to bowl – as he’s been doing for Australia recently – make him a certified must.



Leave him out and risk ending your Supercoach campaign by round three.



Nikhil Chaudhary II BAT-BWL II $126,900



Chaudhary can be a hard one to catch as he can float between the five or six batting spot pending how Tim David is integrated each game, while his bowling capacity is also largely sporadic.



Jag a fixture where he’s into the batting action early and bowling three overs and you have a Supercoach dream on your hands.



He’s a great stabiliser of an innings that can explode in a hurry.



He scored 232 runs at an average of 23.2 with a strike-rate of 128.88 last season.



He bowled 21 overs in the tournament, taking just four wickets with an economy of 8.04.



The bowling strike-rate doesn’t overly bother me, as it suggests there’ll hopefully be more to come this season, leading to an uptick in scoring with the ball.



Jack Edwards II BAT-BWL II $113,700



Edwards continues to develop his game with both bat and ball that provides him one of the best roles in Supercoach.



He’s likely to bat at six for the Sixers and bowls key overs, even at the death.



He feels like a steal to me at just $113k and will be in my starting team.

Daniel Sams II BAT-BWL II $116,600



Veteran Supercoaches will know the value of Thunder all-rounder Dan Sams to the game.



He’s a quality death bowler that offers some dynamic late-order hitting.



Statistically speaking had a down year in BBL14 with an average of 44.2, however this was reduced after a horrific outfield clash with a teammate ended his season against Perth.



Limited by the injury, he scored just 15 in that game after exiting early.



BBL14 was his first time averaging under 52 points per game.



Injury has plagued him at times so you could wait till round 2 to assess his fitness, but with his upside he’s extremely playable even on a single game week so I’m happy to go early.



Michael Neser II BAT-BWL II $93,000



Rinse and repeat the above on Sams for Michael Neser.



Supercoach pedigree, death overs, class, late order hitting, dual position, round 2 double, bargain price…



Neser ticks all the boxes for a round 1 start and like Sams is a safe play on a single game week.



On his day he can match it with the best in Supercoach BBL.



He averaged just 35.3 last season, in the campaign’s prior he averaged 59.4 and 62.6.

Reserves



Tom Curran II BAT-BWL II $106,000



Former English international Tom Curran is a class allrounder that could bat as high as number 6 for the Stars.



Off a disappointing BBL14 campaign he starts at a great price for a player of his quality.



Granted, his Supercoach output in his last three stints hasn’t been great.



BBL14: 40.2 (five games)



BBL13: 41.8 (four games)



BBL12: 42.8 (five games)



A bit like Marcus Stoinis, he promises so much but hasn’t delivered in recent years, veteran Supercoaches though will remember his earlier campaigns where he averaged 71.5 in BBL10 (14 games) and 73.0 in BBL09 (14 games).



Provided the role looks as good as it appears by round 3 he could well be a must, I’m happy to go early but I may still hold off in opening rounds.



Aaron Hardie II BAT-BWL II $74,800



Hardie is another fallen gun coming off a poor BBL14 campaign where he averaged just 28.4 points.



The two seasons prior he averaged 60.2 and 57.5.



He’ll bat in the top order and should feature far more frequently with the ball.



Jason Behrendorff has left the club, AJ Tye is unsigned, and Lance Morris is injured.



The Scorchers don’t have the double until round 4, however they play the first game of round 1 and 2, and the second game of round 3 making their players perfect looping options.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BOWLERS</h2>



Nathan Ellis II BWL II $153,900



Ellis has always been one of my favourite Supercoach assets to own for double game rounds over the years, he’s a reliable wicket-taker that can take a bag, is a death bowling specialist, is guaranteed his overs and can chime in with some big late order hitting for a quick-fire 20 and strike-rate bonus.



He took 13 wickets last season with an economy of 7.86.



While he’s a bit more expensive than his fast-bowling counterparts, he’s the safest option and is worth the cash in my mind.



Ellis has been a staple of the Australian white-bowl set-up in recent months and will be hard to pass up with the favourable early draw.



Shadab Khan II BAT-BWL II $117,500



Khan is a gun allrounder that has had impressive showings in limited BBL stints to date.



He starts cheap and looks a nice plug ahead of the Thunder’s round 2 double.



Add in the minefield he’ll bowl on at ENGIE and he has strong scoring potential this season.



Ben Dwarshuis II $146,800



Dwarshuis is ageing like a fine wine and his Supercoach scoring is reaping the rewards.



He’s averaged 52+ in six of his past eight seasons with a low of 46.3.



He’s a class above some of his rivals, is guaranteed overs and is often promoted up the order as a pinch-hitter late on in the innings.



Start him for the round 1 double then use the cash to easily move to a gun in round 2.

Hayden Kerr II BAT-BWL II $100,600



I had Sean Abbott in here until his recent injury, but it opens the door for Hayden Kerr.



Kerr should come in and get three to four overs and should be relatively prominent with the bat having opened in the past with success.



He looks a very safe bet at the price with genuine upside.



Nathan McAndrew II BWL II $60,000



McAndrew is somewhat of a placeholder for now, I could upgrade him to another Sixer such as Kerr for the round 1 double.



I’d want confidence that he’ll start for the Thunder’s double in round 2, but if there’s any doubt I’ll just hold off and wait a week.



Reserves



Matt Kelly II BWL II $81,100



With Behrendorff, Tye and Morris out of the picture it should finally open up a regular role for speedster Matt Kelly.



He’s a quality bowler with genuine wicket-taking ability that has been stuck behind the Scorchers world-class pace contingent for years, but he should get more opportunity in BBL15.



Mahli Beardmen will be a rival for this spot, or they could both feature regularly.



At a similar price I’ll start one of the two and use for looping purposes early on.



Matt Kuhnemann II BWL II $75,500



Kuhnemann isn’t locked in just yet, but he does start cheap and can be stashed for the Heat’s round 2 double game week.



Mitch Swepson has left the Heat which should only aid his prospects of bowling his maximum allotment of overs.



He’s not a noted wicket-taker so I won’t be expecting the world from him, but he does free up cash to splash elsewhere and can hopefully make some money of his own in the process.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Flex</h2>



Riley Meredith II BWL II $130,200



I’ll likely start one more Hurricanes quick in my team for round 1, with Meredith and Chris Jordan the major candidates to join Ellis.



Meredith looks fairly assured of his role and is a wicket-taker that bowls at the death, provided I do have that extra cash I’ll likely spend it on him over Jordan.
