NRL Trial Wrap: Supercoach eye catchers from week 2


<p>Week 2 of NRL trials is in the books and whilst some of the games had very little NRL or Supercoach relevance, a number of games did throw up some questions and possible solutions for Supercoaches heading in to the historic Round 0 in Las Vegas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Whilst I will touch on below the main players that caught my eye, I think it’s important to note as with previous years, but maybe even more so in 2024, Supercoach planning and strategy is going to be critical.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Here’s a few key tips for Supercoaches as you put the finishing touches on your squad before Round 0:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tip 1&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Don’t overcommit.</strong> Remember because Round 1 is over two weekends and we have a rolling lockout you could potentially pick the players you want to have from Rabbitohs, Sea Eagles, Roosters and Broncos and have numerous contingency plans for the rest of your team makeup.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sure you will need to fill those spots before the initial lockout to have a legitimate scoring Supercoach team, but there is no reason you can’t swap and change when the critical Team List Tuesday drops for the second weekend of Round 1.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite all but four teams playing next weekend, a lot of things can happen to change the make up of sides.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tip 2&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Do your research</strong>. Sure in Supercoach it is important at times to trust your gut instinct if you can couple that with solid research to support the call you are making then you’ll feel all the more better for it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As Dr. Phil says “The greatest indicator of future behaviour is generally past behaviour”.</p>



<p>This applies to players and Supercoach scoring too. Don’t dismiss the stats.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tip 3&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Take an angle. </strong>There is plenty of Supercoach content out there and lots of it is good stuff, but at the end of the day if you’re like me you want to live and die in Supercoach on your own sword not the word of others.&nbsp;</p>



<p>So definitely take in some advice you trust from experts, but then find your own angle and as long as you justify it then back it in.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For example, starting with Drinky and Feldt because you truly believe the Cowboys have the most potent right edge in NRL and you’ve done the research on their start to the season and believe they have some potentially great match-ups.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That’s just an example, but remember to take an angle based on a combination of research, your gut instincts and what you believe will happen.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tip 4&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Back yourself &amp; be patient</strong>. If a player bombs the first round and yet he is one of your big POD’s or even marquee players you believe are in for a big season, don’t panic.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Trust what you are seeing and give your prediction time to prove you right, hopefully!&nbsp;</p>



<p>I’ve been guilty too many times of trading out players to quickly in a season.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Not only does it burn trades but it can come back to bite you big time!</p>

<p><strong>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Thomas Flegler (Dolphins) $475.6k FRF</strong></p>



<p>Offload ability and may have to pick up the middle forward gap in minutes left by Tom Gilbert’s season-ending ACL tear.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tristan Powell (Storm) $204.3k FRF</strong></p>



<p>Could Powell be an answer to our FRF cheapie prayers? Well, maybe…sort of….hardly convincing I know but if named in the top 17 then at $204.5k he will surely feature in a few SC teams.</p>

<p><strong>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jahrome Hughes (Storm) $722.4k HFB</strong></p>



<p>Hughes was outstanding in the Storm’s trial in Fiji against an almost full-strength Knights team. If you’re looking for a point of difference in a key position then Hughes is likely your man.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Luke Metcalf (Warriors) $483.3k 5/8</strong></p>



<p>Metcalf appears to have secured the 5/8<sup>th</sup> spot beside SJ and he looks to have been working hard on his game.&nbsp;</p>



<p>He is very attack reliant, however he is young and getting better and could be the right fit for a troublesome 5/8 position for Supercoaches</p>



<p><strong>5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Taylan May (Panthers) $458.8k CTW</strong></p>



<p>Could be the highest owned player in Supercoach if he starts at wing with Turuva injured.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Either way if he’s playing centre or wing he’ll be in my side and the great thing is he’s unlikely to play State of Origin so he could be a year-long hold.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ethan Strange (Raiders) $238.9k 5-8/CTW</strong></p>



<p>Simply must be picked at 5/8<sup>th</sup> for the Canberra Raiders in Round 1.&nbsp;</p>



<p>His trial performance against the Cowboys was outstanding particularly in defence where he made key stop after key stop on a rampaging Heilum Luki. Huge future this kid.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bryce Cartwright (Eels) $636.4k 2RF</strong></p>



<p>Way back in 2016 a young Panthers backrower by the name of Bryce Cartwright took the Supercoach world by storm coming out and averaging 77 per game with a combination of offloading and brash skill the likes hadn’t been seen in the NRL.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Could this be the year he finally brings it back? Cartwright has been building for a few years underneath Brad Arthur and he looks super fit, confident and ready to take the NRL by storm once again.&nbsp;</p>
