Mid-range analysis: $80-$120k players to buy, monitor, avoid

We’ve covered the cheapies, so let’s go up a bracket. 



Each year there’s plenty of relevance in this category either from guns who had poor form last season, or guys whose roles have greatly improved. 



Below, we run our eye over all of the relevant mids you might have questions about to see who&#8217;s worth considering for your team this season.



Now firstly, we’ve defined a cheapie as anyone sub $80k in starting price &#8211; <a href="https://scplaybook.com.au/2023/11/17/bargain-buys-rating-the-bbl13-cheapie-crop/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">you can read that article here. </a>



We’ll classify anyone between $80-120k as mid-rangers and the premium guns as being $120k+. So let’s jump in.

VERDICT: BUY and stash



The next big thing in the Aussie bowling lineup is this youngster from NSW. 



Stress fractures ruled him out of BBL12 but he’s back fit and firing for this season and ready to make his mark. The Thunders&#8217; draw with a round 4 DGW makes him a great reserve to stash from round 1 who is all but guaranteed to make good money. If you’re happy with your DGW options for round 1, stash him then cash him out in round 5 or 6 when he peaks.

<li>Nic Maddinson, 87.2k BAT</li>
</ul>



Verdict: AVOID



The ‘Gades are super relevant with their draw. Maddinson, off the back of an ACL injury in last year’s tournament, has not played any competitive cricket so far this season. When fit he should bat 4 or 5 and we know he’s not afraid to bowl himself, but with no form line there’s better options.



He is nearing a return, so keep an eye out.

<li>Joel Davies, 87.8k BAT/BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: WATCH



One of the next big things, Joel makes his way to the Sixers this season after debuting in last year’s tournament for the Thunder. 



A dashing left-hand bat and orthodox spinner, he has as much potential as any young cricketer in the country. 



Despite this, I’d be surprised if he plays for large stretches of this season. He may get his chance as a bowler if injury curtail the likes of SOK and Murphy though, which is a real possibility, and if picked, could make fast cash. Consider in round 1 if named to start.

Verdict: Buy



There’s only a handful of reasons why you wouldn’t pick McDermott and hold for the season at WKP. 



The main one is the draw &#8211; with no DGW until round 7, can you afford to stash a ‘Cane in your lineup each week when there’s good value options across the board? At some point we will all own, it just depends when you buy. At his price, he only needs one good game to get the cash generation rolling.

<li>Jack Wildermuth, 91.1k BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Watch



Remember this guy? It wasn’t that many years ago he was a lock. Now he’s relevant only due to the injury list of the Heat. 



With Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson missing bulk cricket and James Bazley at the Strikers, Wildermuth might be a surprise selection in the start side for the Heat in round 1. 



While job security wouldn’t be great, we know he can do it with ball and bat and could be a nice POD if he finds some form. If named round 1, consider in your side.

<li>Kurtis Patterson, BAT, 93.5k</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Probably an avoid



In horrible form, but a guy who&#8217;s been good in the past in patches and should land a spot in the top 3 of a side on the DGW for round 1. At his price, just needs one good round to get the cash gen going. Not for me, personally.

Verdict: Watch



This bloke turns up on this list almost every season. Now at this third BBL club, Paris has always threatened elite skills in this format but has been limited by injury. 



He’s having a ripper year in the Shield, and at a club with awful bowling depth, could potentially become a mainstay of the XI if all goes to plan. He can find an injury, but with the Stars draw, you could do a lot worse than drafting him in if he’s named round 1.

</ul>



Verdict: Avoid



Again, we say this every year. He’s unlikely to bowl, and doesn’t have the ideal role for SuperCoach. The DGW always makes him tempting, but his consistency makes him a risky pick. Not for me.

Verdict: Buy



Copy paste the McDermott blurb essentially. The round 1 DGW makes him very enticing, and accordingly he’s the second most owned bloke in the game at 51%. Hard to fault given we know he usually starts the tournament well.

<li>Matt Kuhnemann, 104k, BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Buy



One of the issues in assessing the Heat for round 1 is the lack of certainty on whose fit and in favour for their XI. Arguably there’s 4 players you can count on &#8211; Munro, Billings, Pierson and Kuhnemann. 



The left-arm ortho has risen to the clear number 1 spin option for Brisbane, pushing Swepson to obscurity. And while he’s not a dominant force in the competition just yet, with the Triple in round 1, availability is the best ability and he’s in my side.

<li>Paul Walter, 105k, BAT/BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Slightly Risky buy



Big bustling Paul Walter fits a mould &#8211; English veteran who scores a BBL deal after a ‘breakthrough’ season overseas. 



He’s a tall left-arm quick who can hit a long ball. Given the draw and DPP, he’s clearly relevant for consideration for round 1 teams, but we won’t know exactly how he fits into the Heat’s plans until the practice matches. 



Best case; he bats as high as no.5 and bowls 3-4 overs. Worst case; he bats 8 and bowls a handful of overs. At his price, you can afford to take a punt if he looks locked in to the former role, but it does feel like we’ve seen his type before.



Of note, in the recent T20 season in England he was a teammate of another left-arm quick and dashing batter, Dan Sams. While he did average a respectable 21 runs at a strike-rate of 157 with the bat, he only averaged just over 2 overs bowled a match. He does shape as more of a middle-late order batter who can bowl a bit in the DC mould, which can be a volatile role for SuperCoach.

<li>Zaman Khan, 105k, BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: BUY ahead of round 4



The Thunder love an overseas death bowler. And Zaman Khan is the next man off the production line. In the English Vitalty Blast, he took an impressive 25 wickets from 14 games, and while he was less effective in the Hundred, he’s got the role and price to prove relevant this season. With the round 4 DGW, you get a round or two to see if he passes the eye test.

Verdict: Watch, likely avoid



Another conversation we have every year. If Turner is batting at 5 and not bowling, bringing him into your SuperCoach team for the occasional match-defining contribution he offers is like trying to bottle lightning.&nbsp;



A handful of things would have to fall his way for him to be relevant; 



1) Ashton Agar is unfit to start the tournament leading to the Scorchers selecting Cooper Connolly or Hamish McKenzie as their frontline spinner. This would make Turner the second-spinner and likely to bowl an over or two. 



2) Inglis and Marsh make the Test squad. This could see Turner elevated to bat at 4. If both these things happen, he’d be a fun player to own for the round 1 DGW, but they’re big ‘ifs’.

<li>Ashton Agar, 106.3k BWL/BAT</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Watch



Agar had a breakout tourney in BBL11, followed by a return to his middling best last season. The truth is that in a bowling attack with threats like Jhye, Tye and Behrondorff, Agar plays a defensive bowling role which is not that conducive to taking big wicket hauls. If he can overcome the calf injury which has kept him off the field so far this season, there’s some interest given the round 1 DGW and potential attractiveness of a no.7 bat who bowls 4. The first game in Geelong is also a good ground for spinners. Personally I’m too scared from last season to go there, but you could do worse.

<li>Chris Jordan, 106.9k, BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Close watch



On reputation, Jordan’s undervalued. A death bowler who is scheduled to hold down the number 7 spot? That’s a juicy role. 



But there’s always been a gap between Jordan on paper and him in real life. Last season he averaged just 34. The season before, only 28. In five seasons in the BBL, he’s only averaged above 40 SuperCoach points twice. 



Best case; he scores well, makes good cash and earns DPP thanks to some late order heroics with the bat. 



Worse case: he matches his middling output of years past. Have him on your watchlist and be prepared to use a trade early if he’s on song.

Verdict: Buy



Set to be one of the divisive choices for round 1. We all know what Big Papi can do. The only question is will he do it?



At his price, it would take a bold coach to leave him out of their side for the Stars round 1 DGW. But again, worse case scenario would be trading him in for round 3 for the Stars second DGW. Personally, he’s one of the first picked in my side and is unlikely to leave until at least round 6.

<li>Sam Billings, WKP/BAT, 116.9k</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Probably a buy



One of only a handful of Heat players locked into a role for their round 1 triple game week. At his best, Billings is a destructive hitter adept against seam and spin. Could be one of the leading scorers in round 1 if he finds form.

Poised for a breakout summer after a strong form in Shield and One Day Cup for NSW. Still just 23 years old, and locked into a top order spot for the Thunder. Again, the Thunder draw gives us a chance to look at the side for a round or two before pouncing, but be prepared to be drafting him in for their round 4 DGW as he’s a match winner.

<li>Glenn Maxwell, 118.3k BAT/BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Buy



As close to a ‘set and forget’ as you’ll find in SuperCoach. Bring him in and hold for the season. Maxi might not win you SuperCoach, but he can certainly lose it for you if you’re a non-owner when he goes off.

<li>Mark Steketee, 118.5k BWL</li>
</ul>



Verdict: Buy



A new face in the Stars lineup after being unexpectedly squeezed from the Heat side during their run to the Final last season. 



Steketee went from a popular ‘Captain’ choice in Heat doubles to carrying the drinks in record time once Spencer Johnson got discovered. 



Now in Melbourne, he should bowl the death overs alongside Haris Rauf. With their draw, he’s extremely relevant and underpriced for what we know he’s capable of. He’s a solid option for round 1 and should come into your planning at some point given their draw.



PM&#8217;s XI selection is a shame for his Round 1 credentials.
