Squad Breakdown: GWS Giants 2023 SC analysis

You thought Hawthorn had a mass exodus in the off-season? Take a look at GWS!



2022 was a year to forget for the Giants, who – despite having a seemingly star-studded midfield – finished in the bottom four for the first time since 2014.



It’s evident now that they are merely a faint shadow of their former 2019 selves.



It’s more apparent than ever that they’ve committed to embarking on a full-scale rebuild, and while their on-field success will be quite minimal, I still have high hopes for them from a SuperCoach perspective.



Yes, they culled Taranto and Hopper, but they more than made up for it by securing the #1 draft pick, Aaron Cadman.



The vacancy left in midfield opens up opportunities for the likes of Tom Green and Finn Callaghan who, in the past few weeks, have had their SuperCoach credentials skyrocket off the back of some stellar intraclub performances.

Stephen Coniglio (MID/FWD, $557,00)



I’m sure I don’t need to convince you, but if you haven’t got Coniglio in your side, you’re not playing SuperCoach correctly.



He averaged 130.3 points in wins last season.



He’ll play midfield.



He’ll average 105+.



He’ll be a top three forward.



Lock him in and throw away the key.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mid-Pricer</h2>



Tom Green (MID, $534,600)



I wouldn&#8217;t quite say he&#8217;s a premo, but he’s also not really a mid-pricer, but I really wanted to put him somewhere in this article so here he is.



He’s the man so many have their eye on, and for good reason too.



With a full pre-season under his belt, some eye catching intraclub performances, and an opportunity to be the Giants’ “number one” midfielder this year, a lot of coaches will be anticipating a start to the season similar to last years.



Green pumped out a 164 against the Swans in Round 1 last year and followed it up with a 147 against the Suns just two weeks later, eventually resulting in an average of 120 from his first seven games.



However, his inconstancy as a footballer came to the forefront in the back end of last year where, from his last six games, he had three scores in the fifty’s as well as a 49 in Round 18.



If he’s able to stamp that out of his game, the sky is well and truly the limit for him because there’s no doubt that he fits the mould of a SuperCoach beast.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cheapie</h2>



Finn Callaghan (MID, $244,000)



If there’s someone who absolutely fits the mould of a SuperCoach beast, it’s Finn Callaghan.



I honestly can’t tell if I’m watching the Bont or him at times.



I’m a big fan of Finn this season, mostly because of what I’ve been hearing out of the GWS camp.



As I mentioned before, the departures of both Taranto and Hopper have left vacancies in the engine room, and I firmly believe that Callaghan will be the main beneficiary of that vacancy.



He’s a star in the making, and if he plays well in the upcoming trial games, I might even bump him up to “must have” status.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Avoid</h2>



Harry Himmelberg (DEF/FWD, $499,000)



Big H was by far and away the biggest surprise package of 2022.



For some un-known reason, Himmelberg was moved to half back in Round 10 and banged out an average of 110 from that point onward.



It immediately catapulted his owners up the rankings and sent his non-owners crashing down.



He truly was a 2022 game-changer.



But he will not have that role in 2023.



Coach Adam Kingsley has already confirmed that Himmelberg will be returning to the forward line, so for any SuperCoach newcomers who pick their teams based off the previous season’s averages, please don’t get sucked into Harry Himmelberg this year.
