<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Team News</h2>



There are several players vying for the right edge back-row role vacated by Isaiah Papali’i. 



Jack Murchie, Jirah Momoisea and Matt Doorey will all be given a chance to win the role as the pre-season unfolds. 



Doorey was named to start in the second trial game, make of that what you will, it looks wide open. 



Ryan Matterson is suspended for the first three rounds. Nathan Brown and Bryce Cartwright are both injured. 



Bailey Simonsson is expected to miss the start of the season with injury, but will push for a starting role once fit. Haze Dunster, Sean Russell, Waqa Blake and Zac Cini will all battle for backline positions.



At this stage I have Dunster on the wing, and Russell at centre, but it’s really up for grabs at this point. I suspect Mitch Rein will play the early stages as relief for Josh Hodgson at hooker on return from a lengthy ACL injury lay-off. 



As match fitness builds, I see Hodgo becoming an 80-minute man with Rein likely to drop off the bench. It may even happen from round 1. 



The bench make-up is also somewhat of a mystery, with Ky Rodwell and Jirah Momoisea every chance at jagging a spot.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Guns </h2>



Shaun Lane ($724,100) 



The Lane Train, locked into the Spy’s round 1 team which says a lot.



After years of prodding around the 60 point average, the big boy had a career year in Supercoach to finish with an average of 69 points per game. 



Of course the question begs, can he do it again? Or even near his average from last season to match or improve his value? 



I think he certainly can, and the draw is far less of a concern. He’s fairly well fixture proof as evidenced last year in the following games as a few examples: 



Panthers: 51 and 83 (Cleary send-off) 



Storm: 46 and 55 



Rabbitohs: 72 and 85 



Roosters: 41 and 98 



He busts tackles, offloads a stack, scores and assists tries, and is the focal point of Parramatta’s attack, so he gets ample opportunity. 



I’m happy to look for more value as I’m not sure how much he improves on last year, but he’s a genuine POD play to begin the season.

Dylan Brown ($781,300) and Mitchell Moses ($738,500) 



Like Lane, Brown had a breakout Supercoach season in 2022. 



Along with his attacking prowess, it’s his base of 35 per game that makes him such a safe option in the halves. 



His work-rate in attack and defence is arguably second-to-none in the halves in Supercoach. 



My issue is of course backing up his big year, but more so the Eels brutal early draw to start the season. 



It’s just about as hard as it gets, so I’ll be targeting halves with easier fixtures. 



All the same goes for Mitchell Moses regarding draw. Moses definitely doesn’t have the base of Brown, but his floor is lifted due to his goal-kicking. 



Parramatta’s draw opens up enormously from round 6 and they play all three major bye rounds over Origin, so get ready to pounce on a number of their stars hopefully at discounts from this point. 



The likes of Clint Gutherson, Maika Sivo and Will Penisini will also come into contention from then onwards.

Hodgson is one who could well surpass his starting price by some margin, but unfortunately there are too many other great cheapie/mid-range options at hooker.

J’Maine Hopgood ($298,800) 



If the hype wasn’t enough leading into trials, get a load of his stats from the All Stars game. 



10 runs, four tacklebreaks, four offloads, 45 tackles.. There’s approximately 89 points in that alone! 



He could be among the great cheapies to grace Supercoach and with output like that there’s a sniff he becomes a keeper, imagine!

Edge back-rower 



I won’t go into too much detail here, but any of Doorey ($234k), Murchie ($433k) or Momoisea ($234k) will have relevance if named to start on the edge in round 1. 



They’ll be running off Mitch Moses and hopefully jag big minutes, but a bench rotation will be the concern, along with the returning Ryan Matterson. 



Although I suspect Matterson will play through the middle as per 2022.

Rodwell is a sneaky chance at a round 1 bench spot, I suspect there won’t be enough minutes available even if he does get picked, but one to monitor.
