Thommo's Takes: SuperCoach BBL Round 4 wrap


<p>Welcome to our review article at SC Playbook where we review the action from the previous round and see what impact it had on our side and what we can learn from it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hurricanes vs Renegades</strong></h2>



<p><em><strong>Result: Hurricanes won by 8 runs</strong></em></p>

<ul><li>Some changes to both teams that we need to be aware of. David Moody came in for the Renegades for Kane Richardson. They might need to keep him in the team after his spell of 3/16 from 4. Wade (suspended) and McDermott (slight niggle) were out for the Hurricanes. They were replaced by Caleb Jewell and Tim Paine.</li><li>Both bowling attacks dominated the match. The highest individual score made from either team was the 40 made by Will Sutherland as he tried to win the match off his own bat.</li><li>The outs for the Hurricanes meant a rejig to the batting order. Jimmy Neesham opened the batting and was probably their best with 28 off 19. Caleb Jewell was at number 3. Tim Paine slotted in at number 6.</li></ul>

<ul><li>All Renegades bowlers got amongst the wickets. They started with their spinners again which they have done in most matches.</li><li>Akeal Hosein again was in fine form. He has carried the form from the T10s and continued it into the Big Bash. My mate Maxy informs me that he will be over $200,000 before the Renegades double in round 5. He picked up 3/29 and could have been in for a monster supercoach score, but he was dismissed for 11 before he could really get going. Owners will be happy though because he can be sold for a huge price when he departs for the UAE International League.</li><li>All-rounder Andre Russell’s four game stint has now finished. Again he was handy with the ball taking 2/23 off 3 overs. He has been very good for the Renegades with an awesome SC role and we need to monitor how the Renegades choose to replace him.</li><li>Jimmy Neesham bowling his one over for the Hurricanes. I think he has bowled one over only in a few games this season for them. The 1 over specialist!</li><li>Ellis again going wicketless. I feel like I keep writing this in these columns. He will be unbelievably cheap soon in time for the Hurricanes double. We need to remember that he is an Australian short form representative too!</li><li>Riley Meredith went bang! 3/12 in his 4 overs in a man of the match performance. The big fella put it all together and the Renegades were on the receiving end!</li><li>The spin duo again were amazing for the Hurricanes. Dooley and Khan taking wickets and creating havoc. Those that started them or jumped on early will be very happy! 2/23 for Dooley and 3/20 for Shadab.  </li><li>Another ordinary start for the Renegades top order. The impending arrivals of Guptill and SOS will mean there could be some changes afoot. Something we need to monitor before they play their next game.</li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sixers vs Stars</strong></h2>

<ul><li>Changes and resting were very relevant to this match up. NCN and Stoinis were both managed/rested for the Stars. Seymour and Hatcher were their replacements. The Sixers also pulled a double change for the SCG clash. Bird and Naveed were in for Murphy and Naveen. Still no sign of Chris Jordan yet.</li><li>SOK did a hamstring and went off the field after completing a typical SOK spell. A huge blow for any brave POD hunters who went early on him before the Sixers DGR.</li><li>The clear best batter for the Stars was Beau Webster. Coming in at number 4, he made 78 off 51 to get the Stars to a competitive total. With Stoinis out, he went back to bowling overs and was alright with the ball too, picking up 1/24. He should have had a wicket with just about his first ball, but Zampa put down a very gettable catch.  Fantastic for owners, even better for those that had him on field in that round, however, we need to be cautious with the return of Stoinis. Last match, when Stoinis bowled, he completed all 4 overs and Webster did not even get a look in. It is the situation where owners leading into round 4 where ecstatic to see this all round performance, however, he shouldn’t be a trade in, regardless of a negative breakeven as there are no Stars doubles until round 9 and when Stoinis returns it is presumed his SC role is nowhere near as attractive. He is in handy form though!</li><li>Naveed and Abbott both only bowled 3 overs and were expensive. Sabba did pick up a handy caught and bowled though! Sean Abbott is a SC gun and has proven it for many seasons. At this stage I am still planning on trading him into my side for DGR in round 5, but will any brave coaches consider an anti-POD option as his scoring has been down this season, compared to previous ones? I think Naveed had a zero for SC and I fielded him over Zampa!</li></ul>

<ul><li>Dan Christian bowled 2 overs this game. That might be a new record for this tournament. I believed he was only used due to a couple of other Sixers bowlers leaking consistent runs. </li><li>Hayden Kerr produced perhaps his best bowling performance so far. 2/26 off 4 overs and could have had more wickets! It was his best surge and death over so far, proving hard to get away when Webster and Cartwright were trying to get quick runs. However, in this game he proved that batting at 7 can have problems, as he did not even get a bat in the Sixers innings. I know my mates Spy and Maxy were debating him as a purchase in round 4,5 or even at all. What did you make of that performance at home? If you didn’t trade in with a negative breakeven before this round, will you in round 5?</li><li>Josh Philippe came and went early after chopping on Luke Wood. Will he bounce back for the Sixers DGR?</li><li>Kurtis Patterson and James Vince showed a little bit for the Sixers with the willow. 24 for the left hander and 33 for the right hander from England. They can provide decent scores on their day and are demonstrating that nice little lift in form I like to see before a double, especially if you are considering a trade in for a batter. Only going off memory but I do seem to recall that Kurtis had a sneaky good double for Perth last year. Can someone please fact-check that?</li><li>Zampa was economical in his spell ending with 1/21.</li><li>The partnership which won the Sixers the match was the one between Silk and Henriques. Silky did as he always does, ran hard between the wickets and puts pressure on the fielding side with his run a ball 30. Moises had his best knock so far (not hard after getting two ducks before this) with 52 off 32. A real captain’s innings when the game was in the balance. Maxy will you be picking him again for the double? You had success last year with Mo!</li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Scorchers vs Strikers</strong></h2>

<ul><li>Scorchers yet again were unchanged for this match. A very settled line up for them to start the season. The Adelaide Strikers did make some adjustments for this match. Tactically, due to the ground they were playing at, old Sydney Sixer Ben Manenti was in for Wes Agar. Henry Hunt opened instead of Weatherald. Unfortunately for him he got a golden duck in his first game for the tournament.</li><li>A switch in the batting order for Perth. Hardie came in at number 5, ahead of Ashton Turner. It seemed to work as Turner had his best knock so far, compiling 48 off 38 in a player of the match performance. Hardie was okay too with 22 off 17. We need to monitor if this was a one-off or something Perth continue with.</li><li>The game was a tight one. Perth saved their power surge for the last two overs of the innings in what proved a pivotal moment in the match. Turner dominated Thornton with some big blows that won Perth the match. Thornton shows in his previous overs he still is a threat in this competition and finished with figures of 2/46 from 4.</li><li>No one from the Strikers could really get going. The best was the consistent Mr Lynn who got 35 off 34 before running himself out.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Perth bowlers were all pretty tidy. Richo even bowled a maiden in his first over. Tye was the wicket taker in this match with 3/30. All 5 main bowlers completed their full allotment, which meant no overs for Hardie or Turner.</li><li>2 run outs for Perth. They came from Behrendorff and Inglis got a last ball run out which would please owners no doubt!</li><li>Yet again, Matt Short was able to strike with the ball after a quiet performance with the bat. 2/11 off 2. Surely a 3<sup>rd</sup> over is warranted after game a start like that! In all seriousness if Adelaide play two spinners (Khan and Manenti) his overs will be limited. Something to monitor with team selection going forward.</li><li>Khan economical and crafty with 1/15 off his 4.</li><li>3 overs for CDG and he finished with 1/17.</li><li>Inglis looked good again but was dismissed in soft fashion for 19 runs in quick time. If only he reached 20!</li><li>Lyth again dismissed cheaply. He just hasn’t got going this tournament and reinforces the theory that some people follow in SC that batters from overseas can struggle in the BBL.</li><li>Lastly, a quick mention on Ashton Agar. On a recent enough podcast I mentioned that he could be someone I hold long term in my batters due to his position eligibility. I did have to trade him this round (price tag related) to bring in a similar player in Hayden Kerr. Another low score with the bat for Agar and he bowled his four overs and picked up one wicket. For now it looks like an okay sell, but just monitor him and his performances because we know that consistently bowling four overs in a good side and playing well with the bat will lead to a very nice SC average over a whole season.</li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Thunder vs Heat</strong></h2>

<ul><li>One change for each side to be aware of for this game. The Heat replaced Bazley (hamstring soreness) with Xavier Bartlett. The Thunder, fresh off a round 3 bye also made a change with Qadir playing his first game for the tournament with Qadir replacing the released Farooqi.</li><li>Brisbane Heat batters struggled on the Spotless Stadium wicket making only 6/121 after deciding to bat first.</li><li>Munro made 43, but only had a strike rate of 91.</li><li>Xavier Bartlett repeated some of his batting heroics from last season. 28 off 17 as he tried to get the Heat to a total that they could try and defend.</li><li>The Thunder line up is now very interesting. Considering they won the game so easily, one would assume that they stick with it for a few matches now. They have six genuine bowling options they that will call upon each match. It will be interesting to see who bowls 4 overs regularly and if any patterns emerge. Green, Qadir and Sams bowled 4 overs in this match. 3 overs for Doggett and McAndrew. 2 overs for Sandhu.</li><li>Green was the pick of the bowlers. 2/14 off his 4 overs.</li><li>Daniel Sams was held back and bowled his overs later on in the innings which would be pleasing for owners. 2/27 off his 4 overs. In fact he was the last bowler called upon by captain Chris Green. All 5 other bowlers had a go before him.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Qadir did nothing wrong on his Thunder debut. 1/19 off his 4.</li><li>If the Heat were any chance they needed Neser and Steketee to repeat some heroics. They did not as Gilkes and Hales showed their true potential as an opening partnership.</li><li>Gilkes after a tough start to the tournament was awesome. 56 off just 34 balls. This type of innings should see him stay at the top of the order for a while.</li><li>Hales again was great after a decent knock last game. People who held after the double will be facing a huge negative breakeven and he will make some good coin before he can be sold.</li><li>Just a moment of commiseration for myself. I don’t want to make these articles about me. They are supposed to be objective quick SC reviews of each match. But I did have both Hales and Gilkes on my pine. Those points would have been handy, but I will take the cash generation!</li><li>As you would predict, when you win by 10 wickets in quick time, none of the Heat bowlers have figures that make for nice reading.</li><li>Swepson wicketless again. He looked unbelievable value heading into the season but for whatever reason is just not taking wickets. He will either turn it around later on in the tournament or be extreme value heading into next year. I can’t believe at round 4 I am already looking towards propositions into BBL13!</li><li>Thank goodness the Heat didn’t play like this in their DGR!</li></ul>
