Final Word: Trades, tactics, tips, Round 13

Only 4 games this round but for supercoaches these games could be so critical to the trajectory of your seasons. Fear of missing out on a player that scores big this round certainly can drive supercoach decisions but my only advice would be to really forward plan. Take stock of your trades and boosts and what kind of numbers you may want for the Round 17 bye round. If you have gone reasonably hard on trades like me you have some big decisions to make on whether the players you are bringing in are keepers until the end. Right now I’m grappling with whether Olakau’atu and Tohu Harris are keepers or just below that level. I’ve convinced myself that Joey Manu and Reuben Garrick are both must haves for this round and keepers for the season.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strategy</h2>



Looking forward to Round-17 it is going to be a really tricky week to get 10+ players in so if you have been disciplined and kept trades and boosts it is a real POD play to attack that week. Personally I’ll just be looking to survive it and hopefully not drop back to much. At this stage my player numbers could be as low as 8 or 9 for that round and I feel as if they’ll be reasonably low across the board in Supercoach.



For me like a lot of supercoaches I am attacking this week. Three trades with Grant, Curran and Vailea out for Olakau’atu, A Crichton and Garrick. My punt at holding Josh Curran in the hope he returned this week did not pay off, but his cash certainly comes in handy. Trading Harry is a calculated risk but with State of Origin and his injuries and high BE I’m going to take that risk and hope he doesn’t hurt me too much. I’ll definitely look to get him for the run home if he comes through Origin unscathed.



At this stage I’m keeping my powder dry on the trade boost although I do think Nat Butcher is still a solid trade in. I don’t really have any other players worth that much that I am willing to trade out. I’m wrestling with whether Ola or Tohu are keepers or if I decide they’re not then I can and will change that trade to Nat Butcher.



Lots of forward planning but this is the part of the season where Supercoaches need that planning, preparation and certainly some luck to rocket up the rankings.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">PODs &amp; SuperPODs</h2>



Here’s the players I’ve identified as PODs (Point of Difference players – less than 10% owned) and SuperPODS (less than 2% owned) that should be on your radar. I’ve listed them in ranking order of who I believe is the best to take the risk on:



PODs (My top-5 ranked)



<ol type="1"><li>Angus Crichton – Bit shocked he didn’t make Origin top-17 let alone the extended squad to be honest. The clear number one trade in and likely to be 40% owned after this week surely.</li><li>Nat Butcher – Has been scoring sneaky good and doing it quietly. The hard draw is not really a deterrent because he is a workload player and relies on large tackle counts. Definitely a consideration. &nbsp;</li><li>Joseph Tapine – Just a great player in real NRL. Starting to translate to some pretty decent supercoach scores. Worth consideration if you are tinkering with your FRF’s over origin period. &nbsp;</li><li>Matt Burton – Scores of 71, 57, 78 and 75 over the last 4 weeks gives him a 4-week avg of 70+ which is elite in the 5/8 position which is pretty skinny for options behind Munster and Dylan Brown. Question is has Burton turned the corner and is finding his feet at his new club or did he just hit a week month of the draw?</li></ol>



SuperPODs (Top-3)



<ol type="1"><li>Tohu Harris – has proven pedigree but doesn’t look fully matchfit yet although he’s punching out big minutes early in his return from injury. Take on trust.</li><li>Kurt Falls – Really risky and really left-field. However based on NSW Cup stats Kurt Falls could come in and post a 60+ score. The theory is he would serve as a nuff and handcuff of sorts. Maybe just plays the one game and goes away for the season or could in the case of injury to cleary or luai get a run in the best team in the comp. &nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CAPTAIN</h2>



For me the obvious options are VC Garrick and C Manu. The VC loophole is well in play and if you can nail a player you really like to dominate and score well you get a couple of goes at it this weekend. Depending on game narrative Drinkwater, Taumololo, Taylan May, Kikau, Olakau’atu and Tuipolotou are all decent left-field shouts.
