Squad Breakdown: Kangaroos SC roster analysis

The wooden spooners surprisingly provided plenty of Supercoach relevant players in their squad for us to choose from last year.&nbsp;



Jack Ziebell and Aaron Hall were a revelation as forwards moved to play defence and on kick outs and hopefully, we can find some more hidden gems this time around.&nbsp;



Let’s look at how they are shaping up for the new season.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Roster changes</h2>



All the moves in the off season seem to be with an eye on the future instead of trying a quick fix to get up the ladder.&nbsp;



Having said that they have bolstered their depth with the acquisitions of Hugh Greenwood from the Suns and Callum Coleman-Jones from the Tigers.&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">GUNS</h2>



Aaron Hall // $572,900 // Defender



Those who had the guts to pick him last season were richly rewarded.&nbsp;



He had a season average of 105.2 which include injury affected scores of 6 and 37 at the start of the season.



Amazingly, he didn’t go under 110 in the last eight matches. The question is will history repeat and can he play another 20+ games when he’s already touch and go for round 1 with a hamstring complaint?&nbsp;



Probably a little too risky for my liking as a starting pick, especially at his age and injury history, but he must be considered as he’s in the same bruise free role running off half back.



Tarryn Thomas // $459,300 // Mid/Fwd



He had a nice 30-point bump in his average from 2020 to 2021 and now into his fourth season in the AFL, he should be ready to break out.&nbsp;



When given the opportunity on the ball, which he should get more of again this season, he really stood out and had two 135+ scores.&nbsp;



His floor remains an issue, especially if he spends some games with a majority in the forward line, but the upside if clearly there to see and you can pick him as a forward.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BARGAIN BIN BUYS</h2>



Jason Horne-Francis // $207,300 // Midfielder



Prized No.1 pick who looks like he’s ready made for AFL. A powerful inside mid who can play forward and take a mark as we saw in a recent intraclub match. &nbsp;



He looks a match winner with his contested ball and ability to hit the scoreboard.



On paper everything screams ‘lock’, I’m just not 100% convinced with the elevated price and the fact he could play majority forward.&nbsp;



I could be over thinking it, but from what I’ve seen to date he starts strong and fades in the second half so there’s room for improvement in his tank.&nbsp;



A huge watch in this coming AAMI Community Series match vs Sydney for me, and currently in my side.



Charlie Comben // $123,900 // Ruc/Fwd



A third-year product with the one career game under his belt for 35 points.&nbsp;



A second-round selection in the 2019 draft who is capable as a key forward and ruck but has had his fair share of injury concerns, including stress fractures in his foot and a broken collarbone.&nbsp;



They seem to be a thing of the past as he tore up a recent intraclub practice match where he flew for everything and hit the scoreboard.&nbsp; Should play the odd game and offer you a VC loop when not.



Joshua Goater // $117,300 // Midfielder



A Calder Cannons product taken at pick 22. Coach David Noble describes him as a flexible rebounder that can play off half back and wing. Definitely one to watch in the practice matches to see if he has that role because as we know, that usually means good scoring power.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">AVOIDS</h2>



Jack Ziebell // $585,800 // Defender



I have no doubt he will score okay early, especially with Hall likely out of round 1, but you need to think long term with your starting premium picks.&nbsp;



A huge jump in his average when he moved to defence last season, but he only had one tonne in the last five rounds and finished poorly with a 60 against the Swans.&nbsp;



He’s the second highest priced defender in the game and should have the same role that made him a great pick last year, but there’s question marks with the return of Hall and McDonald to that defensive line-up. A clear pass for me.

Jy Simpkin // $529,000 // Midfielder



Coming into his sixth season he could be ready to explode.&nbsp;



We know he can put out a monster score, but he’s just not consistent enough to be a starting pick at this price.



He has slowly been increasing his average year after year, but he has still yet to manage a three-figure season average. &nbsp;



As such, he falls well behind the top tier midfielders we have to choose from. Perhaps an upgrade target if he’s looking good around the byes, but he could also only be a draft option for us.
