Champion's advice: Captain selection, early trade strategy

<p>A few people have asked me for advice on who to captain for the opening rounds of the season, two words, Payne Haas. </p>



<p>My advice is not to bother trying to get tricky with your
captains when you can guarantee 75-80 points every week from Haas. </p>



<p>The only other guys I would consider would be James Tedesco and Tom Turbo at home against weak defensive sides in the future, but it’s definitely a risk over the first few weeks of the season as teams find their feet. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s fair to say that some people will nail their captaincy
choices each week and will average 100 with their captains, however that
requires considerable luck. Payne Haas does not. </p>



<p>Going deeper into the season, it’s more viable to start
captaining guys like Ponga, Munster, Moses and co. when you&#8217;re chasing ranks. </p>



<p>However, over the opening 6-8 weeks of the season, it’s not
worth falling behind by trying to jump ahead with risky captaincy choices. </p>



<p>If your overall 17 is consistent enough from week to week you can win SuperCoach with a captain’s average of 80 (I averaged 81 last season – runner-up Walson Carlos averaged 100 for perspective). </p>

<p>Another question I&#8217;ve seen asked has been in regards to trade
strategy over the opening two rounds (before round 3 price rise). </p>



<p>In theory, you want to get rid of the four players who are
going to make the least amount of money for your team and replace them with the
four players who will make the most. </p>



<p>Obviously, this is basically impossible given salary cap bounds. My advice is to buy the players who were the biggest mistake to start without, no matter the cost. </p>

<p>It’s better to shuffle your team around sooner rather than
later to get the must-have players. </p>



<p>An example last season would be starting without John Bateman,
which many good SuperCoaches did, but the very best coaches were proactive and
got him as soon as possible, no matter the sacrifices to their team structure.</p>
