Team analysis: Melbourne Renegades BBL13 targets

Stacked.



That’s the best way to describe the Melbourne Renegades roster for Big Bash 13.



They’re well positioned to add to their sole BBL title back in 2018/19’s edition of the tournament.



Aside from that, the history of the Gades’ has been pretty grim with just four finals campaigns to their name, the latest coming with a respectable third placed finish last season.



Fortunately, the future is bright.



They’ve recruited very well, headlined by a few huge international signings in Quinton de Kock and Joe Clarke who join Mujeeb ur Rahman in red.

Furthermore, they’re arguably the most in demand team to begin the Supercoach season with double game rounds in round 1 and 3!



Their one and only bye doesn’t present until round 7.



Not just a high quality roster, the Gades’ also have serious depth that is likely to see veteran quick Peter Siddle used in rotation.



This does mean we need to be a little wary for their double game weeks at the risk of quicks being rested, and spinners for that matter with star duo Adam Zampa and Mujeeb ur Rahman coming off the back of big World Cup campaigns.

Star South African Quinton de Kock is touch and go for the opening round pending South African and Abu Dhabi T10 duties, as is Joe Clarke for the T10, but should be available.



Regardless, we’ll know both before the opening round begins.



With the draw they have, and the roster with proven Supercoach credentials across the board, you could make some sort of case for just about every player in this side.

Seeing them well you might say, especially when you consider it was in an ODI World Cup…



In career T20 internationals the South African gun averages 32.52 runs at a strike-rate of 137.33.



Sure to be hugely popular if available for round 1, do you pay up big money early for a proven international star?



I’m very reluctantly leaning towards no due to his huge price tag and the history of international imports struggling in their first stint down under.



More often than not, it takes them time to adjust to conditions, often seeing them excel in their second or third stints in Australia.



I think back to Dawid Malan coming over as the clear cut number one ranked T20 batsmen in the world a few years back and struggling to really get going.



Even the great AB de Villiers was only decent, and he’s among the best short form players of all-time!



Obviously this isn’t to say de Kock won’t buck that general trend and hurt non Supercoach owners, but it does come with big risk if he takes time to settle in down here.

Tom Rogers // BWL // SC BBL12 Ave: 59.6 // $184,600



Rogers is a genuine POD play to begin the tournament off the back of an outstanding BBL12 campaign, but now priced at top dollar he’s not for me.



He was the revelation of Supercoach last season with a 59 point average.



He took 23 scalps in the tournament and is also capable of some late order hitting which we’re yet to see the best of.



He’s some rotation risk with so many quality quicks and may also bowl less frequently at the death with players such as Richardson and Siddle on deck, along with world-class spin options.



However, at $180k I’ll pass for the opening rounds and reconsider for the round three double when it’s just the Renegades and Stars playing twice.



Will Sutherland // BAT-BWL // SC BBL12 Ave: 51.1 // $158,400



Sutherland has been a Supercoach enigma over the years since debuting, generally failing to deliver, but more as a result of limited opportunity rather than actual performance.



That changed last year having landed a nice all-rounder role that resulted in a 51 point Supercoach average.



Across the tournament he took 7 wickets in 44 overs, and hit 210 runs at an average of 30.00, striking at 150.00.



He’s been starring with the ball in the 50 over Marsh Cup as the top wicket-taker with 11 scalps at an average of 18.18.



Game 1 team lists will be vital as he’s likely to be batting at 7.



I’m interested, but with a stacked bowling attack and a fairly high price I’m likely to look elsewhere.



Kane Richardson // BWL // SC BBL12 Ave: 46.3 // $143,300



Max Bryden put it well in his guns analysis article:



‘Kane’s always done well in average teams. Now, with a supporting cast which is World Class, he could go even better.’



I’ve always been a huge Richardson fan, and his ability to perform in a dire squad over the years has been impressive.



It’s equated to quality Supercoach averages of:



BBL12: 46.3



BBL11: 65.2



BBL10: 48.6



BBL09: 56.0



BBL08: 74.5



Cricket is simple in many ways.



Good batsmen = higher scores



Higher score = High required run-rate



Higher required run rate = more shit shots played



More shit shots played = more wickets

Joe Clarke // WKP-BAT // SC BBL12 Ave: 45.1 // $139,600



Clarke is blasting runs in English long and short formats of late and will be popular for the early doubles.



His last four scores in long-form County cricket have been 70, 22, 62 and 141*.



In the T20 Vitality Blast this season he scored 432 runs at an average of 30.85, striking at 154.83.



He enters BBL13 in red-hot touch, knows the Australian conditions as good as any international and can go on with his scores.



Definite interest.



Adam Zampa // BWL // SC BBL12 Ave: 42.6 // $131,900



Getting picked in the World Cup team of the tournament is about as good a form line as you’ll find.



Zampa is very cheap based on a below average Supercoach campaign last season.



He took 16 wickets in 14 games across the tournament, going at 7.14 per over.



With some lesser totals to defend at stages last season, oppositions were able to see off Zampa more often than not and nullify his wicket-taking threat.



This season, in theory, the Gades’ will post some better totals, so the point around Richardson above comes into play for Zampa.



Very hard to pass up at the price…



Mujeeb ur Rahman // BWL // SC BBL12 Ave: 40.8 // $126,300



Pretty well rinse and repeat on Zampa above.



Mujeeb has been a Supercoach gun in the past and is extremely economical, but struggled to take wickets defending lesser totals.



He could be set for a big Supercoach campaign and at just $126k you could do worse than running both Gades’ spinners if both are named for Round 1.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">PODs</h2>



Aaron Finch // BAT // SC BBL12 Ave: 40.6 // $125,700



At this stage I think Finch would need to be locked into the top three for the opening round double to really consider, even then I’d be reluctant.



We know what he’s capable of, but with five teams playing 2+ games in the opening round I think there’s better options than the former Australian captain.



He’s far too rocks or diamonds for me with so many great players available.



If de Kock or Clarke are unavailable and he bats up the order you could consider a bit more.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CHEAPIES</h2>



Jake Fraser-McGurk // BAT // SC BBL12 Ave: 18.3 // $62,500



Recently blasting the quickest one-day century of all time in just 29 balls for South Australia, we know the kid can hit…



Since that knock he’s made starts in all six innings, without going on to record a half-century. They did largely come in Shield cricket.



He&#8217;s a chance to be named in the side, but with Nic Maddinson potentially available and so much depth in the side he may be the odd man out.



For now he’s an avoid for me, if he finds himself batting top four if say de Kock and/or Clarke are unavailable I’ll happily get him in at the price even if not playing him in my starting XI.



Peter Siddle // BWL // SC BBL12 Ave: 24.4 // $75,500



Siddle currently isn’t listed in our predicted XI for the Renegades, but there’s spots up for grabs and they may turn to the veteran.



With plenty of quality quicks available Siddle is likely to be used in rotation which makes him a little hard to pick, but if named for Round 1 you could always bring him in on the loop.



What’s the upside though?



Well, just two tournaments back Sids was the top wicket-taker with 30 scalps!

Changes from last year



Three big name recruits completely change the face of this team.



Quinton de Kock&nbsp;is a world class ‘keeper batsman and immediately makes them a contender. He should be available for Round 1, albeit he would need to depart early from the T10 in Dubai.



Adam Zampa&nbsp;gives them a world class spinner to pair with world class spinner,&nbsp;Mujeeb ur Rahman, and&nbsp;Joe Clarke&nbsp;is a consistent and potent opener who replaces the potent but inconsistent Sam Harper who is off to the Stars.



Jake Fraser-McGurk&nbsp;could find regular game time if club captain&nbsp;Nic Maddinson&nbsp;is not fully fit after injuring his ACL last tournament.



JFM’s batting position will depend on&nbsp;Shaun Marsh’s&nbsp;fitness which we can’t gauge because he’s not playing any cricket right now.



The bowling and batting are seriously classy and we should see a lift in SuperCoach points across the board. This is all before we see 39 year old&nbsp;Peter Siddle&nbsp;has joined the side as well.



Young&nbsp;Harry Dixon&nbsp;is the token ‘player of promise’ signed and is down the depth chart.



Rationale



The ‘Gades are super relevant given their draw to start the year.



The top 4 of de Kock, Clarke,&nbsp;Aaron Finch&nbsp;and Marsh theoretically picks itself, albeit all but Finch will want to open the batting.



Maddinson, JFM and&nbsp;Jono Wells&nbsp;are the primary middle order candidates and&nbsp;Will Sutherland&nbsp;should float depending on the match situation.



With a dearth or allrounders and no bowling options in the top 6, the Sutherland selection is compulsory but does impact how often we should expect to see Siddle named in the side.



If Sutherland bats 6 – which would probably be a stretch – we could see all of&nbsp;Kane Richardson,&nbsp;Tom Rogers&nbsp;and Siddle all named alongside Zampa and Mujeeb, but this might be unlikely unless Sutherland shows he’s more than just a slogger. If Marsh is unfit, JFM’s pending selection in the Top 3 would make him an intriguing cheapie prospect.
