Bandit’s skippers: Round 24 captains to target and avoid

The SC Bandit runs the rule over the best AFL SuperCoach captaincy and vice-captaincy options to consider.

AFL

The last round of the SuperCoach season is here! Well done and good luck to all of those coaches out there who are in league grand finals, or pushing for a high finish in the overall ranks.

Last week was pretty cut and dry week with Marcus Bontempelli (162) leading the way like he has done for most of the season. The Bont has had 13 scores of 120 or more this season and been clearly one of the best captain options every week.

Rowan Marshall (141), Jack Sinclair (137), Zak Butters (129) and Tom Stewart (128) were the best of the rest, Tim English (118) salvaged a decent score for those who landed on him instead of Bont.

Let’s look at the best captain options for the final week. I’m big on backing players who still have something to play for this week, avoiding players who’s teams are out of finals contention for the most part.

Darcy Cameron

You’d be a brave coach to VC Cameron against Essendon tonight, but it’s not as crazy as it seems. With Sam Draper now out injured, the Bombers will be playing Bryan and Phillips in the ruck. Cameron’s best scores this year have come against teams with lesser ruckman so he could just pop out a 130 – which we know he’s capable of on his day.

Zach Merrett

Merrett’s record against the Pies in recent times is outstanding and I’m expecting a response after a quiet outing last week in a game where his team was smashed from start to finish. Can he get up for a game that means nothing for the Bombers though?

Andrew Brayshaw

Pretty confident that Brayshaw avoids the Finn Maginness tag this week, I think Mitchell will send his gun stopper to Serong instead. Should be able to get off the chain a bit as a result.

James Sicily

I can’t see Fremantle putting a heap of time into Sicily this week, could be a good VC play to back up into a safe captain option. Should be a nice unique in head-to-head leagues too.

Last 3 v FREM: 63, 116, 97

Harry Sheezel

I talked him up on the podcast this week as a potential VC option and he’s still very much in my thinking after back-to-back 130+ scores in the last fortnight. No more Ziebell or Hall, so he’s the main distributor for North. Would be a huge POD this week.

Jack Sinclair

I like him as a VC option this week into a safe captain like Bont or English. Should roam around and rack up disposals at will against Brisbane and I would prefer Sinclair over Rowan Marshall this week who I think is a huge sub risk heading into finals.

Last 3 v BRIS: 133, 111, 118

Tim English

Wasn’t as dominant as we were hoping for last week against West Coast but I think we’ll see a big game from English this week against what will effectively be Geelong’s VFL team. Very safe option to finish the year.

Last 3 v GEEL: 156, 79, 80

Marcus Bontempelli

Wouldn’t have got the three votes in my view last week so he’ll be super keen on a three voter here to enhance his Brownlow chances. That won’t be his motivation for winning the game of course with a finals berth still up for grabs. Bear in mind though that lots of coaches will be captaining him this week so you may want to look for a unique player as your other VC/C.

Tom Stewart

The fact that Ratugolea is out this week makes me think they may ask him to play more of a lockdown role this week, but his record at the Cattery is so good that he has to at least get a mention.

Last 3 v WB: 127, 112, 39

Jordan Dawson and Rory Laird

I can’t split these two this week, I think they’re both potentially in for big games. Just bear in mind though that they play at the same time as the Bulldogs, so you won’t be able to have Bont or English as a VC into Laird or Dawson as C.

Dawson’s Last 3 v WC: 95, 108, 106

Laird’s Last 3 v WC: 156, 145, 136

Zak Butters

This guy is making a really late dive for the Brownlow in my opinion, he’s had four scores of 129+ in a row and I think he’ll make it one more against the Tigers at home this week.

Last 3 v RICH: 104, 121, 87

Clayton Oliver

Copped the Finn treatment last week and couldn’t really get going, I think he’ll have a much easier time of it against the Swans. Nice POD captain option with a super record against Sydney.

Last 3 v SYD: 156, 134, 125

Max Gawn

Monster record against the Swans in recent times. Definitely worth consideration if you’re an owner, but he could also be a sub risk.

Last 3 v SYD: 198, 112, 150
