Final say: Round 13 tactics, trades, skippers


<p>First round of the byes done and dusted and SHEESH were there some storylines to come out of this weekend!</p>



<p>Frankly I’m surprised it’s taken me 25 words of this article before mentioning Kieren Briggs. What an incredible, SuperCoach-season-shaping performance from the big fella. </p>



<p>I went into the weekend hoping against hope that he’d manage to at least compete with whatever Jarrod Witts put up on Saturday night, and not only did he do that, Briggsy managed to put another 30 points on top of it.</p>

<p>Still buzzing from it!</p>



<p>My side managed a respectable 1,886 points in Round 12, good enough for a ranking of 18,000th for the round and a nice little jump up the overall rankings to 9,400th.</p>



<p>Aside from Briggsy, it was a nice, well-rounded performance from my boys. Seamus Mitchell’s late withdrawal meant just 18 boys on the park and being forced to take Eddie Ford’s 48, but hard to complain given the circumstances and exciting to go into Round 13 with what feels like a strong team across the board.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Round 12 Positives</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Briggsy</strong></p>



<p>Hard to understate what a crucial performance this was from GWS’s new permanent #1 ruckman (surely?!) in the context of the SuperCoach season.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That’s now 8 straight tonnes in 8 games of VFL/AFL this season for Briggsy, underlining what a low floor he seems to have as a primary ruck option. He’s risen $86k in price already and is projected to go up another $90k by the time the Giants hit their Rd 15 bye, meaning he’ll be nearing $430k in price.</p>



<p>Unfortunately for the Briggs train, he comes up against North Melbourne this week, who are comfortably conceding the least points to rucks in the league (avg. 68 per game). This could all come crashing down, but jeez it’s been fun while it’s lasted.</p>

<p><strong>Captain Zach</strong></p>



<p>This coming from an Essendon fan who wasn’t particularly enamoured with Zerrett’s club captaincy appointment in the preseason &#8211; he’s been absolutely fantastic as a leader. Couldn’t ask for much more.&nbsp;</p>



<p>More relevantly for our purposes, with the weight of the SuperCoach world on him Sunday afternoon against the hapless Roos, Zerrett proceeded to put up 75 SC points in the first quarter, rewarding the many coaches (myself included) who ignored decent VC scores from Daicos / Bontempelli and backed in the skipper.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sure, Liam Shiels sat on him after quarter time, but the damage was already done and 137 points as captain you’ll take every day of the week and twice on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Tom Stewart</strong></p>



<p>This is my first extended period of time as a Tom Stewart owner in my SuperCoach career and &#8211; I have to say &#8211; it feels fantastic.</p>



<p>I can’t quite work out how or why opposing teams justify leaving one of the league’s best intercept marks completely free to roam around half back as he pleases, but my word is it good to watch when you own him.</p>



<p>Another 127 gives Stewart a 3-round average of 118.7 going into a well-timed Geelong bye this week. I’m excited by the possibilities for his remaining 3 months of the season.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Round 12 Negatives</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Stephen Coniglio &amp; Tom Green</strong></p>



<p>A combined 216 AFL Fantasy points resulted in… just 170 SuperCoach points for these two fellas.</p>



<p>Without Josh Kelly in the guts, this Giant midfield lacks a serious amount of class with ball in hand, evidenced by Cogs and Green combining for 12 clangers and low 60% disposal efficiency for each.</p>



<p>This is becoming a problem, particularly for Cogs. I now think he can’t be a season-keeper if you’re hoping for a top-1000 push.</p>

<p><strong>George Wardlaw</strong></p>



<p>I still can’t believe this game from Wardlaw resulted in just 64 points.</p>



<p>This was one of the best 17 possession outings you will ever see, with the third-gamer racking up 12 contested possessions, 6 tackles and 7 clearances.</p>



<p>His lateral movement is really something to behold. The eye-test told me this looked like a 120+ score in real-time, which is hugely promising for Wardlaw’s prospects as a viable M8/9 option going forward.</p>

<p>Not going to dwell too heavily on this 72 from Red Dog. Phoenix Spicer had a mandate to shadow him everywhere he went, which resulted in a huge intercept/rebounding game from Jordan Ridley.</p>



<p>I’m still huge on Redman over the back half of the season.</p>

<p>12 trades left, $49k in the bank.</p>



<p>Not a heap to report here. Using my cash from Darcy -&gt; Briggs last week to get Weddle up to a midfield premo who’s already had their bye.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Steele, Serong and Brayshaw are the three options I can see here, and of them it’s Brayshaw’s $30k price cushion that I find the most persuasive factor, as well as his 119 point 5-round average.</p>



<p>Weddle is the unfortunate prospect on the chopping block, largely because he’s closer to his peak price than Seamus Mitchell after Mitchell was an unfortunate late withdrawal over the weekend. I also think Mitchell is a slightly more reliable long-term F7/D7, with less variance in his scoring. One of the Hawks boys has to go given how short my Rd 14 bye defenders are.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Eddie’s Captains</strong></h2>



<p>Bigggg week for captaincy decisions, with almost all options on the table thanks to the soft Suns / Cats bye.</p>



<p>Rowan Marshall kicks us off on Friday night with a favorable matchup against the Swans, who have a history of conceding high scores to rucks. Marshall has previously dominated against them and offers an intriguing left-field choice for the opening game of the round after putting up a 156 in his second-to-last outing against Sydney.</p>

<p>Continuing the ruck theme, Tim English has an easy matchup against Port Adelaide, with the Power apparently conceding hitouts completely after subbing Scott Lycett off in the third quarter against Hawthorn last week. As a non-owner I’m concerned about what Timmy could do to the Pear under the lid at Marvel. Bont is carrying a niggling knee injury, which I think pushes him down the captaincy pecking order just slightly, although he is coming off a 145 in his last game against Port.</p>



<p>Coming off his bye week, Lachie Neale will be a very popular trade this week due to Brisbane&#8217;s favorable draw. With only one of their next five games against a top-eight side, Lachie is set to kick things off with a bigggg score against Hawthorn at the ‘G, although buyer beware he does only average 85 in his last two against them (with a 157 in his third-most recent game). Josh Dunkley is also in red-hot form, topping 145 in three of his last four games. His consistency has been elite this season, although I’d suggest his ceiling is maybe slightly lower than Neale’s.</p>

<p>The Crows boys also have a great matchup against the Eagles, which is great for Rory Laird, who’s gone 145, 136 and 120 in his last three games against them. After a disappointing performance against the Suns, the Crows will be determined to bounce back strongly at home, and Laird should benefit from this. Jordan Dawson is also worth a look here for obvious reasons.</p>



<p>After a massive outing against the Roos, Zach Merrett is also worth a look. The Essendon skipper has been in great touch lately with a five-round average of 122. Given he was brought back to earth by Liam Shiels on Sunday, which turned the game for North Melbourne, I’d be shocked if Carlton didn’t send someone to him from the get-go, which is obviously not great for his scoring capacity.</p>

<p>Nick Daicos has to be considered week-in-week out, but it’s just a big move waiting until Monday for your captain in a massive game. I’d probably look elsewhere this week.</p>
