Final Word: Captains, weather, super PODs, Rd 11


<p>Round 10 of Supercoach BBL started and ended in a flash, with four games in two days.</p>



<p>It was a strange week where I found lots of teams were stuck with an unfavourable line-up filled with batting only option.</p>



<p>This of course deters from the general strategy in loading your squads with allrounders and bowlers who are far safer players.</p>



<p>The reason being for the large number of batter-only picks was that a stack of injuries and resting’s in the past week altered trade plans quite substantially.</p>



<p>Also, with the likes Steve Smith, David Warner, Travis Head and Alex Carey returning, there were some popular trade-in options from the batting department.</p>



<p>We were again taught an extremely valuable Supercoach lesson which is that roles are key.</p>

<p>All those above, including other popular bat only options such as Ben McDermott, all failed to trouble the Supercoach scorers.</p>



<p>All-rounders are gold!!!</p>



<p>The Cooma Stallions had a poor round, scoring just 524 points to drop to 131<sup>st</sup> rank overall.</p>



<p>Things went okay, but I shot myself in the foot when following the weather in the final game of the round.</p>



<p>I had every intention of captaining Sean Abbott (who tonned up), but heavy rain headed for the SCG on Sunday night had me inclined to play safe and skipper AJ Tye as the Scorchers were bowling first.</p>



<p>It cruelled my round…</p>

<p><strong>Forecast: </strong>Shower or two, 26 degrees, 70% chance of 0-3mm of rain in the morning and afternoon.</p>



<p><strong>Verdict:&nbsp;</strong>There’s likely to be a few showers around, but hopefully anything minimal that hits does so early on as predicted. Shouldn’t impact the game too significantly.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wednesday</strong></h4>



<p>7.40PM: Scorchers v Hurricanes, Optus Stadium, Perth</p>



<p><strong>Forecast:&nbsp;</strong>Mostly sunny, 33 degrees, 0% chance of rain.</p>



<p><strong>Verdict:&nbsp;</strong>All clear</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Thursday</strong></h4>



<p>7.15PM: Thunder v Renegades, Manuka Oval, Canberra</p>



<p><strong>Forecast:&nbsp;</strong>Shower or two, 21 degrees, 70% chance of 0-6mm of rain, the chance of a thunderstorm.</p>



<p><strong>Verdict:&nbsp;</strong>There may be some rain around, so just monitor the updated forecast in coming days.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Looking Ahead</strong></h2>



<p>Round 11 is another single game week with no doubles or byes, making the draw pretty simple to navigate.</p>



<p>The final bye for the tournament will be in Round 13 (the last week) which is the Perth Scorchers.</p>



<p>The Scorchers have a double in Round 12, along with the Brisbane Heat, so resist trading their players out if possible and begin making plans to get them in immediately.</p>



<p>Note that it may be wise to be patient on the Scorchers quick bowling contingent as the depth is so immense so they’re always a risk of rotation.</p>



<p>For that reason, I’d probably want to see someone like Tye or Behrendorff named in game one of the double before investing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Super PODs</strong></h2>



<p>In the Final Word, we’ll look at the super POD options, the players at under 5% ownership (or around about) that could send you soaring (or falling) up the overall ranks.</p>



<p>They come with big risk, but the reward is immense if it comes off.</p>



<p>As ownerships of double game week players will likely soar above 10% for most of those options closer to game time once trades are made, I’ll look towards single game week players.</p>



<p>Last week, <strong>Martin Guptill </strong>was the high-risk, high reward pick at just 0.2% ownership in the top 1% overall.</p>



<p>He flopped with just 21 points. While he still remains an outstanding POD option with huge upside and huge risk, the Renegades do play late in coming rounds so the loop option is harder to initiate.</p>

<p>This week, I like my boy <strong>Nathan Coulter-Nile</strong> at 6.6% ownership among the top 1% of coaches.</p>



<p>He’s averaging a very healthy 61.8 SC points per game this season.</p>



<p>Despite playing in a disappointing Stars outfit, he’s been one of the best bowlers in the competition, with 13 wickets in eight games, and an economy of 6.83, outstanding!</p>



<p>Injury/resting risk keeps people away from this Supercoach gun, but he rested in the Stars last game which should alleviate some risk of it happening again.</p>



<p>The Stars need to win every remaining game to be any chance of playing finals, so he looks fairly safe for the next two games to me.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Skippers</strong></h2>



<p>Last week,&nbsp;the enormously popular vice-captain call of Matt Short went okay with 50, which I decided to ignore in favour of another skipper.</p>



<p>My tip in this article was Sean Abbott who delivered in spades with 100 points!</p>



<p>Sadly, I ignored my own advice, purely because of rain which proved to be non-existent.</p>



<p>Hopefully a few jumped on board with Sabba for his outstanding spell.</p>



<p>This week, Matt Short again looks the safe play as vice-captain in game two.</p>



<p>That being said, he did only bowl one over last game, but who knows what his exact role will be against the Sixers.</p>



<p>The game is in Coffs Harbour which has been a very batter friendly wicket in the past, so I’d be reluctant to look elsewhere.</p>

<p>If he fails, it comes down to the final two games for skipper (unless you wanted to put the VC on someone in game one).</p>



<p>If looking at game one, Marnus Labuschagne looks the play.</p>



<p>While I love Abbott, the Coffs ground is probably a deterrent for bowlers, so I’ll likely look elsewhere.</p>



<p>I know this is probably a little boring, but it’s hard to go past Dan Sams who reminded us of his ability with four poles against the Hurricanes while defending only 135 runs.</p>



<p>He’s yet to fire with the bat, but with the Thunder top order struggling he’ll likely continue to get opportunities.</p>
