Final Word: Trades, tactics, tips, Round 17

We are finally on the home stretch and moving into the critical second bye round for Supercoaches. It’s a marathon and not a sprint and some Supercoaches will feel like they are just hanging on and need the finish line while others probably feel if the race was just that bit longer they could finish further up the ladder! Either way with 9 rounds to go there is plenty to play out over the rest of the season.&nbsp;



Not least of all the possible carnage that might come out of State of Origin-3 and the worrying trend of increased Covid cases across the country. At this  time of year when traditionally Supercoaches are looking to really go for quality and less quantity in their playing squads, you may need to rethink that if injuries or illnesses come into play. So far it hasn’t been a major concern.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strategy&nbsp;</h2>



One of the great advantages of having such a valuable squad is that I can potentially get myself to a team that very few other supercoaches can. Assuming all stay fit and available my ultimate top 20 players looks something like this: &nbsp;



FLB – Tedesco, Papi&nbsp;



CTW – Manu, Garrick, To’o, May&nbsp;



5-8 – D Brown, C Munster&nbsp;



2RF – Matto, Ola, Talakai, Tago, C.Murray/D.Fifi/J.Curran/A.Elliott



FRF – J.Tapine, Ipap, Joe Ofa, Lolo



HOK – H.Grant, D.Cook/R.Cotter/R.Robson



With 10 trades left and the value in my team it is possible I could get to this side or very close to it. It is highly likely however that one or more of these players gets injured or suspended so as always its important to be flexible.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trades</h2>



I’m considering this week is a tough one. I actually want to get to as close to the top 20 side as possible as quickly as possible to give myself the best chance to climb the rankings and finish well in my head to head leagues. So there is a decent case this week for me to actually trade in some players who aren’t playing in round 17 or Origin. Players like Joseph Tapine and Adam Elliott would come into consideration however it is more likely I could trade in the likes of Dylan Brown, Joe Ofa and Shaun Lane.  As you can probably tell I’m really undecided and may likely make these moves mid round if at all.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">PODs &amp; SuperPODS&nbsp;</h2>



Here’s the players I’ve identified as PODs (Point of Difference players – less than 10% owned) and SuperPODS (less than 2% owned) that should be on your radar. I’ve listed them in ranking order of who I believe is the best to take the risk on:&nbsp;



PODs (My top-4 ranked)&nbsp;



1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Alex Johnston – Having scored 4 x 100+ scores in the last 6 weeks AJ’s appeal as a POD is undeniable and he gets the match up against a bottom four team in Newcastle. With Knights and Bulldogs the next two weeks shapes as a viable short-term play. &nbsp;



2.&nbsp;&nbsp; Joe Ofahengue – Pumping out huge scores for a middle forward. 5.3% owned at the moment with a 75 three round average. Not ideal that he is in a struggling team but you could argue he’s in career best form.&nbsp;



3.&nbsp;&nbsp; Shaun Lane – Proving a very reliable 2RF option over the past 5 rounds with a 5rd average of over 80! Is a nice play when teaming up with Dylan Brown as often points are related with these two.&nbsp;



4.   Maika Sivo – Conditions didn’t suit Sivo but certainly he is a decent gamble for a few weeks if you are looking for round 17 numbers.

SuperPODs



1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dominic Young – Has played outstanding in a team that has been heavily beaten most weeks. Deserved the two tries last week and with opportunity is capable of finishing the season well and playing in the World Cup for England. Tough to go with any confidence though in a struggling Knights team.&nbsp;



2.    Latrell Mitchell – With an average last year of 113.5 for the last 6 games including 4 x 100+ scores we know he can finish a season very well. If you believe that Latrell can replicate this in the finish to 2022 he may well be worth a throw at the stumps particularly with the late out of Hynes.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CAPTAIN</h2>



No doubt the majority of Supercoaches have the VC on Papenhuyzen and then see what happens from there. If you are bringing in Latrell Mitchell maybe he’s the play for captain if Papi doesn’t post a 90+ score? Alex Johnston will also come under serious consideration for owners as will IPap, Sivo and Dylan Brown.
