Quantium data analysis: Rd 10, vital numbers to beat the best

After a couple of weeks of hiatus (combination of being sick and then overseas) we are back with the NRL player ownership stats.



From a personal perspective, the last few weeks have been a Supercoach disaster!&nbsp;



I’ve managed to free up Teddy’s scoring, weigh down Talakai and generally time every CTW move poorly! Not having Cameron Munster has also proved a nightmare.&nbsp;



Nevertheless, we move on, and that means starting to plan for the bye round.  I can’t be alone in thinking my team is poorly placed in that regard.  Work to be done!

Round 9 saw some huge Supercoach scores.&nbsp; Hynes (185), Grant (138), Munster (130), Tedesco (126), Garrick (113) and DCE (105) all delivered in spades for their teams.&nbsp;



Injuries to heavily owned players such as Ryan Papenhuyzen and Cameron Murray will see some major team changes this week.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Fullback</h2>



The table below sets out the proportion of teams in the top 100, top 1,000, top 5,000, top 10,000, top 20,000 and top 100,000 that own each fullback.&nbsp;



Ryan Papenhuyzen’s injury will no doubt see some major changes in FLB ownership this week.&nbsp;



At the time of writing, the most popular traded in players included five FLBs – Nicho Hynes, Tom Trbojevic, James Tedesco, Scott Drinkwater and Nick Meaney.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CTW</h2>



CTW has seen some significant changes in the past three weeks.



Approximately 75% of teams now own Joseph Suaalii and Isaiah Tass, whilst Will Penisini and Beau Fermor have been sold down.



I suspect many people are finding CTW tricky this year. If we ignore Sean Russell, Taylan May has the highest average at CTW (79) – a full 10 points per game clear of Ronaldo Mulitalo.&nbsp;



In fact, the top 16 CTWs (by average) include just four owned by more than 10% of teams – May, Joseph Manu, Xavier Coates and Euan Aitken.&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Five-eighth</h2>



Five eighth has proven to be arguably the most important position in Supercoach this season.&nbsp;



Perhaps I’m biased, but as a non-owner of Dylan Brown and then Cameron Munster, I feel like I get hammered every week at five-eighth.&nbsp;



Put simply, if you don’t own Munster, you are not near the lead. With a bye round looming, a high price, and issues elsewhere to solve, I’m not even in a position to bring him in this week.&nbsp; Time for Cody to step up..



Te Maire Martin is owned by 20% of the top 20,000 teams but just 10% of the top 100. He proved disappointing for those who brought him in last week.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Halfback</h2>



Not surprisingly, halfback ownership has consolidated over the past few weeks such that almost all leading teams have both Nicho Hynes and Nathan Cleary (potentially with Blake Taaffe or Lachlan Ilias depending on dual starting positions).



Just three weeks ago, 85% of the top 1,000 teams owned Brad Schneider and 39% owned Mitch Moses. This has now fallen to 9% and 2% respectively.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2RF</h2>



With injuries to David Fifita, Josh Curran and now Cameron Murray, we are starting to see some more variation at 2RF.&nbsp;



Over the past three weeks, ownership of Isaiah Papali’i and Jason Taumalolo have both increased to the point where each are now owned by 87% of the top 100.&nbsp;



The other major moves over the past three weeks have been for Angus Crichton (now owned by 7% of the top 100,000, but 18% of the top 100), Heilum Luki (owned by 7% of the top 100,000), Keaon Koloamatangi (now owned by 7% of the top 100,000 but 18% of the top 100) and Tevita Pangai (now owned by 20% of the top 100).

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FRF</h2>



The past few weeks have seen a sell down in each of Payne Haas (10% down in the top 10,000 teams), Max King (7% down), Josh King (34% down), Jai Arrow (17% down) and AFB (5% down).



Most teams appear to have replaced these guys with one of Jason Taumalolo, Isaiah Papali’i or TPJ.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">HOK</h2>



We’ve been saying all year that Harry Grant was the standout hooker in 2022.&nbsp;



To demonstrate his dominance, Grant has now scored 34 points more than the second highest scoring hooker (Damien Cook), despite playing two less games.&nbsp;



Grant averages 95 points per game, Cook is second at 70 per game and Reuben Cotter is third with 61 per game.



As a result, Harry is the only player owned by every one of the top 100 teams (technically a team ranked equal 100th doesn’t own Grant but they fall 101st in my spreadsheet!).&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Round 9 Captaincy Choices</h2>



With some monster scores, round 9 was a huge week for captaincy choices.&nbsp;



Teams that went with Nicho Hynes surged up the leaderboard, whilst those who captained Nathan Cleary (the second most popular choice overall) dropped down.
