Captain's Corner: Round 5, skippers to target and avoid

Round 4 was a chocolates or boiled lollies round for many SuperCoaches in terms of captaincy picks, with a couple of well owned players punching out huge scores and one player burning many on Sunday afternoon.



Those who had Max Gawn as their VC (myself included) would have been stoked with his score of 160 SC points against Port Adelaide, allowing for a stress-free weekend.



Lachie Neale was ‘tagged’ by Mark O’Connor on Friday night and still managed to score 128 points from 30 disposals and 11 clearances.



Jack Macrae was dominant against Richmond on Saturday despite the Bulldogs not being able to secure the four premiership points. He now averages 139.4 against the Tigers from his last 5 games!



Let’s take a look at the best captaincy options for Round 5.

Lachie Neale



Was seemingly ‘tagged’ by Geelong’s Mark O’Connor and it did little to slow Neale down, tallying 30 disposals and 11 clearances on the night. Collingwood doesn’t appear to have a disciplined stopper in its side so I expect Neale to be finding plenty of the pill tonight against the Pies despite a mediocre recent record against them.



Last 3 vs COLL: 89, 88, 113



Brodie Grundy



It feels like Grundy has been just a bit ‘meh’ over the first month of the season, despite an average of 109.8 and a low score of 96. Comes up against Oscar McInerney and Darcy Fort tonight but the reason I’ve thrown him in this week is his previous game against the Lions was dominant. If he can get on top early then he should be in for a good night, albeit you’d be a brave man to pick him as VC over Neale.

Jack Macrae



Macrae was simply outstanding last week and there’s no reason why he can’t back that up on Good Friday against the Kangas. Yes, North showed some spirit last week but I can’t help but think they might revert to the mean here against a Bulldogs side which is clearly better than their 1-3 form line. Kayne Turner has proved a nuisance for opposition mids in recent weeks, but I think he goes to Bontempelli or Smith.



Last 3 vs NM: 108, 138, 90



Josh Dunkley



If this guy could kick straight in front of goal he would be well and truly in the ‘uber premo’ discussion. Just four behinds to his name from more than a handful of shots on goal is one of the reasons why the Dogs are struggling to get wins on the board. Hasn’t played against the Kangaroos much in recent times, but I think Dunkley will be set for a big game.



Last 3 vs NM:&nbsp; 132, 130, 71



Jack Steele



It was pointed out last week that the Hawks enjoy giving up a lot of SC points to midfielders and that’s exactly what they did last Sunday. They particularly rolled out the red carpet for Steele who scored a nice 125 which has boosted his average back over 110 for the season. No reason why he can’t do that again this week, provided the Suns don’t send Rowell or another pesky tagger to him. His recent record against Gold Coast is excellent.

Touk Miller



Started the season red hot with a 140 and 137 in the first two games before a quiet one in Round 3 had owners a little nervous. Was slow to get into the game last week against Carlton as well but recovered to post his third three figure score of the season. The Saints don’t tend to tag, so he should have no issues finding the footy provided Gold Coast are competitive. Hasn’t missed the ton against St Kilda in his last three outings.



Last 3 vs STK: 115, 109, 101



Max Gawn



Returned to the Gawn of old with a bang last week as he took a baseball bat to Port Adelaide in the midfield. Braydon Preuss has gone and got himself rubbed out and that is great news for Gawn who will likely come up against the less physical Matt Flynn. His record against GWS is outstanding and if you VC’d him last week I can’t see any reason to jump off.

Christian Petracca



Has been just okay the last fortnight with teams paying him a bit more respect than what the Bulldogs did in Round 1. Matt ‘The Human Clamp’ De Boer looms large this week but I’m hoping that the Giants decide to send him to Oliver instead. Probably looking elsewhere this week.
