Draft Breakdown: Round 4, waiver-wire targets

We take a look at the best options to grab from the NRL SuperCoach Draft wires in Round 4.

Draft Breakdown NRL

We’re now three rounds into the NRL season, and we’re getting a gauge on how coaches are looking to utilise each player in their squad.

This gives us a little more of an idea of who may provide value to your SuperCoach Draft side.

For example, we’re seeing consistently big minutes in players like Jai Arrow, Beau Fermor and Cam Murray, while guys like Joe Tapine and Ethan Bullemor aren’t getting the minutes required to be overly relevant.

Despite some consistent samples to analyse, the continuing influence of injuries, COVID and other matters provides plenty of opportunity on the waiver-wires that we can claw into.

Last week’s priority waiver picks of Taylan May and Tom Starling both delivered with big scores, along with value waiver picks in Josh King, Kenny Bromwich and Herbie Farnworth. Hopefully we can continue the good run into Round 4.

Taane Milne didn’t get in on the action as a priority waiver, but that selection was more aimed as a future pick when the Rabbitohs draw becomes easier next week.

Every week I will be looking at players still available in 65% of leagues.

There may be better options still available in your league, but this article will be focusing on the players that are likely to be available in most leagues. Below are some good options for this week.

PRIORITY WAIVERS

Jeremiah Nanai

A player I’ve raved about earlier in this column, Nanai looks to have cemented an 80 minute position for the Cowboys in the second-row.

He’s got a massive future and importantly for Supercoach he has attacking upside as evidenced by last round’s hat-trick.

This will be the last week he’ll be available on any wires, so if he’s lucky enough to be on yours, snap him up.

Taylan May

An obvious one here that needs little explantation. He was my top pick last week and delivered with a hat-trick and 106 points.

The left wing position at Penrith is a great place to be. May is a great starting play every week with a huge ceiling due to those around him.

Josh King

Another from last week’s column, but one worth noting as he’s still available in many leagues.

While we can’t expect those amazing attacking stats every week, it’s good to know King has them in him.

He has a big motor and is a safe play each week, even with threat of fewer minutes.

Knights left edge back-rower

Whoever gets named to play left edge back-row today for Newcastle will become a handy acquistion.

It should be Jirah Momoisea or Brodie Jones. They may play as much as 80 minutes and get a good run at the position with Mitch Barnett and Lachlan Fitzgibbon set for lengthy breaks from action.

VALUE WAIVERS

Tom Flegler

Returning from suspension for his first game of the season, Flegler looks a shrewd pick up.

Injuries to Jordan Riki and Brendan Piukora will only help him, despite being primarily edge players.

Flegler has a friendly Supercoach game with a great offload, giving him a bit more upside than your average FRF options.

Adam Clune

Despite tough games (on paper) against the Roosters and Panthers, Clune has settled in nicely at Newcastle to average 50 points per game this season.

He should only get better at his new club, and he and the club are exceeding early expectations.

He might not have enormous upside, but as a backup half option he’s a handy pick up. Joey Johns has raved up his form this season, surely that can only be a good sign?

Kenny Bromwich

Another from last week, but another who will stay in many waiver-wires despite a good score of 62 against the Eels with 42 base points.

He plays 80 minutes every single week and in a brilliant attacking outfit like Melbourne he’ll find attacking stats often enough to make him a great pick up.
