Final say: Round 2, trade plans + tactics

Well, that was a crazy way to begin season 2022!



There were 100’s from rookies, 60’s from premos, and some whopping scores from under-priced players. It was eventful to say the least.



Before I jump into some ideas to prepare yourself for Round 2, let me quickly recap what happened with my team in Round 1.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THUMBS UP</h2>



Jayden Short (DEF, 109, 30%)



Boy, talk about needing a defender to step up! Jayden Short rescued my defence on the weekend, with the next best score being a 73 from Lachie Whitfield *vomit*. Crisp, Ryan, and Whitfield&#8230; You need to take a long hard look at yourself.



Jack Macrae (MID, 133, 49.2%)



Just doing what he does best. The only mistake I made was not taking his VC score&#8230; We’ll talk about that in the ‘Thumbs Down’ section.

Lachie Neale (MID, 140, 53.7%)



This was always going to happen, but geez I didn’t expect a 140 right off the bat! I feel sorry for anyone who didn’t start with him, but it’s not too late to bring him in.



Patrick Cripps (MID, 132, 35.2%)



It was a brave move to start Patty considering what he’s done to me in the past, but wow that faith paid off well! He looks incredibly fit as well, but my only worry now is that Walsh is back, and that may diminish Crippa’s influence.



Matt Rowell (MID, 157, 51.2%)



Stop it, Matthew!! 157 is absolutely absurd, and if he isn’t in your team now, you need to do everything possible to ensure that he is for Round 2.



Nick Daicos (MID, 98, 81.7%)



Thanks Nick 🙂



Rachele (MID/FWD, 118, 69.9%)



I would be a hell of a lot more stoked about this if he was ACTUALLY ON MY FIELD. But nope, for some completely unknown reason I decided to start JOSH WARD over him hahah.



Grundy (RUC, 124, 49%)



Business as usual for Brodie&#8230; #1 Ruck and there’s no question about it.



Tim English (RUC/FWD, 123, 9.9%)



The POD pays off!!! As soon as I saw that Stefan Martin wasn’t in the squad, I knew it was going to be massive for Timmy and holy moly was it massive indeed! Unfortunately, Martin probably won’t be out every week, but after English’s unbelievable performance against probably the best Ruck duo in the league, he has to be considered the #1 Ruckman at the Dogs now.

Jack Hayes (RUC/FWD, 127, 59.7%)



ON MY BENCH!. Legend though, and I think he stays at least another week in the Saints’ 22.



Dunkley (MID/FWD, 117, 59.7%)



#1 Forward in the comp&#8230; Next nearest is daylight.



Zac Butters (FWD, 114, 47.4%)



Talk about a good pick! Butters repaid his owners who had faith in him with a brilliant midfield performance. He’ll be pushing for F2 this year.



Nic Martin (FWD, 114, 36%)



ON MY BENCH —Wait no he wasn’t!! Thank the lord I got one right this time! Nic Martin put in probably one of the greatest debuts I’ve ever seen: 27 touches, 10 marks, and 5 goals means that he won’t be leaving the Bombers’ 22 for a loooong time. He needs to be in your team.

Jack Steele (MID, 87, 35.5%)



87 isn’t even that bad, and it’s pretty hard to be mad about it, but what upsets me is that Jack really should’ve been going 140+ against a very young Pies Midfield; what makes me even more upset is that I chose to make him captain instead of taking Macrae’s 133 as VC.



Josh Ward (MID, 36, 62%)



I feel bad being so mean to a rookie, BUT THIRTY-SIX?? I get he was injured in the last quarter, but come on Josh!! I missed out on 118 from Rachele because I trusted YOU.



Brady Hough (MID, 47, 23.7%)



In one week, out the next. Thanks for nothing Brady.

Overall, not a terrible week, but the annoying thing is that it could’ve been so much better if a few more things went my way. Oh well, that’s hindsight for you. Ok, sorry about the ranting before, let’s get into Round 2!

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">GET THEM IN!</h2>



Matt Rowell (MID, 157, 51.2%)



Matt Rowell showed everyone why he’s one of the most talented players to come out of the draft in recent years, and put his injury woes aside to score a massive 157. He is still insanely cheap, and is an absolute lock for your team.



Sam Docherty (DEF, 144, 1.8%)



In one of the most emotional games in the last few seasons, Docherty made his return to footy with an absolute bang, earning himself the title of current equal #1 Defender in the game.



He looks like he’ll be Carlton’s main distributor off half back and up the wing, and with his ridiculously low ownership, he could be an excellent POD. You could bring him in this week for an underperforming premium (Ryan, Ridley, etc.)



Nick Martin (FWD, 114, 36%)



I’m hearing reports that Martin will miss this week after falling ill to the dreaded ‘spicy cough’. Even if this is the case, he should be everyone’s top priority; and if you’re not getting him this week, you’ll need to be getting him next week.

Jack Steele (MID, 87, 35.5%)



He’s a top 3 Mid&#8230; Please for the love of all that is holy do not go and trade him out off the back of one game.



Max Gawn (RUC, 92, 54.8%)



What I said for Steele also applies for big Maxy. He’s a top two ruck, and while I’m glad I don’t own him yet (because he should be pretty cheap in a couple weeks), I’d love to have him in my team for as long as possible.



Jordan Ridley (DEF, 68, 22.4%)



A couple of injuries throughout the game meant that Ridley wasn’t able to play the role that so many had hoped for, but what he did on the weekend won’t be permanent&#8230; He’ll bounce back from this for sure.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">PACK YA BAGS!</h2>



Nic Naitanui (RUC, 63, 4.8%)



His largely inflated price tag just didn’t appeal to me at the start of the year, and now I’ve got all the proof I need to suggest that Nic Nat was a bad pick in general. You can get so many better options for soooo much cheaper (English, Witts, probably even Preuss); If you’ve got him, I think it’s time to say goodbye.



Christian Salem (DEF, 5, 2.6%)



Salem is always one of my favourite PODS to have in Supercoach, but unfortunately, an eight week knee injury means it’s time for him to leave.



Tarryn Thomas (MID/FWD, 48, 5.5%)



Boy, am I glad I chosen Butters over Thomas! He had the pre-season hype, but just did not look up to top six standard on the weekend. There’s a heap of better options around his price that I suggest you take a look at.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">MY TRADES</h2>



At the moment, I can’t see any pressing issues in my team that I need to amend. For those who might be new to Supercoach, your very first trades should be focused around bringing in any key players that you may have missed out on in Round 1 (like Rachele, Hayes, Martin etc.), and trading out any players who have had a severe role change since their pre-season heroics (Tarryn Thomas), or generally just players who have suffered a pretty serious injury (Christian Salem).



Cash generation is the most important thing in this game, but with limited trades, you need to make your trades count; hence why you need to set yourself up with a good base at the start of the season.



As Eddie said the other day: You bought all your players for a reason, don’t just go trading out your premiums because they had one bad game; hold on to them and wait for them to come good&#8230; They are ‘premiums’ for a reason.

At first glance, the main issue I have is that Sam De Koning will miss some games with a concussion (+ there’s no guarantee that he will even come back into the best 22), and Brady Hough will make way for Luke Shuey in the Eagles’ 22.



Aside from that, I can’t see too many problems surrounding my on-field players; so, my plan of attack is to hope that some rookies emerge with some pretty decent job security.



Most likely, my current trades will be:



Brady Hough -&gt; Connor MacDonald



Sam De Koning -&gt; Josh Sinn or Sam Skinner



It’s a marathon, not a sprint! If you didn’t have the best of weeks, don’t worry, you still have so much time left go. Just keep pushing &#8211; A Grand Final isn’t won in March!
