Team announcement: SC Spy unveils Round 1 squad

Out to back up a strong campaign last time around, the SC Spy drops his team for the first round of the new SuperCoach BBL season.

Well it’s under a month to go until the Big Bash season begins, so why not get down to business with an early team reveal that I hope won’t change a whole lot. But of course anything can happen!

I have decided at this stage to lock in four Sydney Sixers for their double game week and two (or three) Brisbane Heat players, before using three trades on Adelaide Strikers options for their double game week in Round 2.

Sydney Sixers

Josh Philippe (WKP/BAT) – Opening the batting and wicket-keeper and with the opening double points it’s hard to leave him out. It would be a bold anti-POD to leave him out. He has to be a skipper option as well, though there is risk as he isn’t an all-rounder.

James Vince (BAT) – The form he had to end the season last time out and the fact you can double him up early at that price means I am locking him in! I’m hoping for a big score and maybe a price rise before moving him onto an Adelaide Striker for their double up in Round 2.

Sean Abbott (BWL) – If he isn’t on Australia/Aussie A duties he will be in my side! Simple as that..

Tom Curran (BWL/BAT) – A serious cricketer, can also bat well if given the chance. I think he will be an early premium selection for me! He didn’t play last year, so hopefully he is fired up and ready to rumble…

Given the Sixers also play Round 2 unlike the Heat you will likely need to keep some or all of the Sixers guys in your team at least short-term, so choose carefully! Given how the bye schedule is set out you may need a few of them long-term. That’s why I want four guys I can trust as much as possible.

Brisbane Heat

Mujeeb Ur Rahman (BWL) – The 20-year-old Afghan could well be my Round 1 skipper. You only need to look at last year’s numbers to see how good he can be! He’s a perfect flip to Rashid Khan in Round 2 if I don’t start with his fellow countrymen.

Xavier Bartlett (BWL) – This is of course team list dependant, but I loved what I saw from him last season. If we can be sure he is getting 3-4 overs I’m keen to have him for his double before moving him on.

The Others

D’Arcy Short (BAT/BWL) & Matty Wade (WKP/BAT) – I love D’Arcy who was a little down last year, so I think he is a touch under-valued if he can recapture some consistent form with the bat. He will bowl as well and loves a wicket, while Matty Wade is a BBL gun and I think I will try and get the jump on others by getting him early ahead of a Round 6 double game week. Though I like the look of Jack Wildermuth (final team pending) from Brisbane, so he may come in for Wade. Decisions to make!

Mitch Marsh (BAT/BWL) – My favourite Aussie cricketer! A GUN short form player and if he bowls it’s even better. Seriously under-valued.

Ollie Davies (BAT) / Aaron Finch (BAT) – These two will be my cheapies and I will use the auto-emergency loophole with them. More to come on that later but basically you get a free look at whoever plays first. You can then keep their score or play the other guy if they fail.

Marcus Stoinis (BAT/BWL) – He is not a lock for me, but I love Big Stoin. He is a super crisp hitter of the ball who can score big and at pace. If he bowls as well he is an absolute star!

Matt Renshaw (BAT/BWL) – He has been in some form of late and appears a nice non-player on my bench ahead of the Round 2 double up where he can be utilised if selected for the Strikers.

The remaining bench spots are up in the air, but I will definitely have one non-player to capitalise on the AE loop hole!

The team above leaves me exactly $0 in the budget! I will obviously take a long hard look at Maxwell and Daniel Sams with a spot for Maxwell there if I can afford it.

Cheers all!
